Protecting forests for communities, wildlife and climate

About us

Carbon Tanzania is a social enterprise that creates economic value in natural resources for indigenous people through sustainable management of forests and biodiversity. We generate forest-based carbon credits that enable Tanzania’s indigenous resource-owners to earn revenues from the protection of their natural resources. These verified emissions reductions allow businesses to invest in a nature-based solution that serves the climate, indigenous communities, wildlife, and contributes to delivering the SDGs. Our work with our forest community partners protects 6888km2 of forest avoiding 857,284 tonnes of CO2 annually while supporting rural livelihoods.

Last month, the Masai communities of the Makame Wildlife Management Area (WMA) renewed their commitment to forest protection by extending their carbon project for an additional ten years. The contract now ends in 2057, once the project reaches 40 years. 🖊 This extension reflects the Masai's enduring dedication to protecting their ancestral lands and the rich biodiversity that thrives within them. By extending their involvement in this initiative, the Masai not only continue to safeguard their forests but also strengthen their cultural identity and role as custodians of one of Tanzania's iconic natural landscapes. 🌳 #indigenouspeople #nature #people #carboncredits

The Hadza and Datooga communities of the Yaeda-Eyasi Landscape project recently celebrated a significant milestone by extending the forest protection carbon project for another decade to 2050. 🎉 This renewal of contracts underscores their ongoing commitment to preserving their forests, vital to the survival of their Indigenous cultures. This milestones demonstrates that the voluntary carbon market has been essential in channeling international carbon finance directly to Indigenous peoples who are critical to global conservation efforts. 🌳 #Indigenouspeople #nature #carboncredits

What makes the Indigenous Hadza so effective at protecting their ancestral forests? We asked Bagayo to answer that question for us. 🌳 Bagayo is a Hadza who grew up in the Yaeda Valley. As an incredible animal tracker, he has traveled throughout Tanzania and regularly supports the Makame Savanna project with their wildlife monitoring exercises. 📽 Hear from Bagayo as to why the Hadza are best placed to protect their forests. https://lnkd.in/di_cvKYa #indigenouspeople #nature #forests

Protecting community-owned forests requires more than a group of rangers to patrol the forest on a regular basis. Before our project operations even begin, the communities develop land-use plans that consider and require the participation of the community. 🌳 The final land-use plans are then communicated to the entire community and enforced through village by-laws, village game scouts and the local government. Education and awareness campaigns are then conducted throughout the community to increase their understanding of the importance of forests, their role in mitigating climate change, how the project operates and how the benefits are shared. A thriving forest protection project requires the buy-in from every community member! #forests #conservation #people #community #nature

🚨 We are pleased to feature in Capricorn Investment Group’s new Sustainable Investors Fund (SIF) Report. Focused on advancing impact outcomes, this new release explains how Capricorn’s investees are helping accelerate positive outcomes for different groups. The report features Respira in its update section, writing: “Respira was one of the first organizations in the market to develop a long-term financing solution for the developers of nature-based carbon removal and avoidance projects…its innovative model solves two issues: the growing demand for voluntary carbon credits as more corporations commit to net zero, and the barriers to capital for project developers in low-income countries.” It also includes our work as a case study, highlighting two of our flagship portfolio projects. First, Carbon Tanzania’s Makame Savannah project which works with Masai people to conserve its highly threatened Wildlife Management Zone. Second, it spotlights Delta Blue Carbon which is restoring and conserving mangrove forests in Pakistan. We’d like to thank Capricorn for showcasing our work and two of our fantastic flagship projects. Please follow the link in the comments to read the full SIF 2024 report. #VoluntaryCarbonMarket #CarbonCredits #NatureBasedSolutions

🌎 We know that nature-based solutions – many financed by carbon credits – can provide up to one-third of the necessary carbon mitigation to reach global climate targets. This is why we are committed to scaling carbon projects for the benefit of climate, nature, and people. We are not a broker. We enter into long-term partnerships with trusted carbon project developers.  Our agreements offer equitable commercial terms, often sharing profits with project developers and communities if carbon prices increase. We use our balance sheet to support project developers through long-term contracts at fixed prices, providing projects with the resources they need to expand. Our approach offers financial certainty, leaving project developers free to focus on what they do best – implementing and developing projects with tangible community and biodiversity benefits. To learn more about our partnership approach, watch this interview with Jo Anderson, founder of Carbon Tanzania. Carbon Tanzania is the project developer of two of our flagship portfolio projects, Makame Savannah and Ntakata Mountains. #ForestConservation #VoluntaryCarbonMarket #CarbonFinance

You may have seen a number of studies published recently highlighting the critical role that forests play in climate mitigation by sequestering carbon. The loss of forests exacerbates the climate crisis as the stored carbon is released. 🌳 In Tanzania, deforestation accounts for approx. 70% of the country’s carbon emissions. Land use change, such as clearing forest to make way for farms, drives these emissions. Carbon Tanzania supports communities as they enforce their land use plans that clearly define where agriculture can be practiced and ensure that areas of natural forests are protected. 🌳 #climatechange #forests #community #landuse
