Carbon capture and storage (#CCS) is set to play a major role in the UK meeting its 2050 #NetZero emissions target, so it’s fantastic to award an Agreement for Lease to Eni for the first CCS project in the UK to repurpose existing pipeline infrastructure!   This is our second Track 1 CCS project awarded and first to reuse existing infrastructure, which will reduce both cost and the environmental impact of construction.   Eni’s innovative approach will see existing pipelines and platforms being repurposed to transport and store carbon dioxide from the HyNet industrial cluster for safe and permanent storage in depleted natural gas reservoirs under the seabed of the Irish Sea.   The Government has also announced today a £22bn funding boost over 25 years for this crucial technology, launching the UK’s first carbon capture industry, creating the opportunity for thousands of jobs and billions of private investment into the sector!   Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eqD_fNqT #CarbonCapture #CarbonCaptureAndStorage

Today's announcement by the government of long term support for the clean energy transition is very welcome, not least for my constituents as it's focus very much includes the North West of England.  Alongside private investment, the Government has committed £21.7billion over 25 years for carbon capture projects on Teesside and Merseyside, which will create jobs and make us a world leading in this major new industry.  While our energy mix long term will be dominated by wind and solar, industry emissions during transition will mean we are likely to need carbon capture and storage technologies. 4000 new jobs are expected to be created, and 50000 jobs supported over the life of these projects. Meanwhile the investment is intended to support the green energy transition and secure the future of industries including glass and cement production, which are particularly important to my constituents and people across the Liverpool City Region. Across the energy sector Britain needs to be in the lead in these major new industries, and having the government being alongside business will be vital if we are to grasp the economic potential of the drive to energy security and net zero.  If we’re ahead on the creation of new industries such as carbon capture, tidal, hydrogen and much more, we can benefit from sizeable export opportunities. We have to avoid the mistakes of the recent past where we failed to make the most of our early promise in sectors such as wind energy. Today's announcement gives the hope that the UK really can be a clean energy superpower and take a lead to the benefit of people across the country.

  • 📢 Great to see the Co-Chairs of the CCUS APPG - Luke Myer, MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, and Henry Tufnell, MP for Mid and South Pembrokeshire - both expressing their strong support for the UK Government's commitment to advance the Track-1 projects at HyNet and the East Coast Cluster. 🔎 Read their full statement: https://lnkd.in/eszcBYdg #CCUS | #CarbonCapture | #NetZero

The funding represents a significant milestone in the development of the HyNet CCS project, marking the launch of the UK’s CCS industry and reaffirming our role as a key partner in the country’s journey towards Net Zero. As the operator of the CO2 transport and storage system for the HyNet Cluster and by reusing depleted reservoirs in Liverpool Bay, we will contribute to reducing emissions from hard-to-abate industries in the North West of England and North Wales, transforming the region into one of the world’s first low-carbon industrial clusters. With an initial storage capacity of 4.5 million tonnes of CO2 annually and the potential to increase to 10 million tonnes by 2030, HyNet will play a crucial role in helping the UK achieve its goal of storing 20-30 million tonnes of CO2 per year. #CCS #energytransition #netzero https://lnkd.in/e2WUK6NT
