We are excited to share that Buro Happold Partner and Director Abhijeet Kulkarni was invited for a second time to the Board of Review (BOR) for the Monsoon semester 2024 at CEPT University. Abhijeet was invited to engage with the course professors and share ideas about industry requirements which will help shape the course content for the master’s degree in Structural Engineering. In his first interaction this summer, there were discussions with the Dean of Faculty of Technology and studio owners on how studio work can be made more realistic and relevant to actual practice. This time, he also covered opportunities for aligning the syllabus closely to industry requirements. Abhijeet said: "This interaction with the academics gave me the opportunity to share general concerns on the quality of structural engineering being taught and the level of knowledge in young engineers graduating from universities. "In my opinion this is a great initiative taken by CEPT University, the impact of which will go a long way in improving the structural engineering awareness and knowledge amongst young engineers." The BOR for Monsoon ’24 at CEPT The Board of Review (BOR) for the Monsoon 2024 semester was conducted at CEPT University on 29 Nov. 46 leading practitioners and academics from across the country were invited as BOR members, to review the work produced by students across 5 undergraduate and 18 postgraduate programs. The review took place during the semester-end exhibition, showcasing the outcomes of diverse studio units. CEPT deeply values the time and efforts invested by the BOR members in the review process. The feedback received is essential in strengthening our programs and ensuring we uphold our commitment to academic excellence and continuous improvement. The Royal Entomological Society Garden at Stratford Cross is a project where nature and urban space beautifully intertwine. Designed by landscape architect Tom Massey and formerly displayed on the main avenue at The RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2023, the garden has now been resettled at the former Olympic site at Stratford in east London, Stratford Cross (formerly known as IQL). Buro Happold was engaged to provide a range of services to the garden relocation project. Four years on from its implementation in 2020, the EU taxonomy has introduced fundamental changes to the workings of the built environment to meet new sustainability criteria. Developers, facing a new landscape of climate risk analysis and ESG requirements, must now keep their assets compliant with rigorous, science-based climate targets - or diminish their chances for attracting possible investors. In the light of recent catastrophic flooding events in Europe, thorough risk assessment and management strategies can mitigate the impact of the climate crisis, as changes in design, building structure or technologies can significantly prevent or reduce damage from climate risks. Buro Happold's European Lead Asset Management, Associate Director Prof. Dr. Eckhart Hertzsch Hertzsch explains why it is so important to take climate risk analysis seriously in any consideration of property development, starting at the acquisition phase. As we approach the end of 2024, two key conferences have come to a close, both impacting the future of the built environment: COP16 and COP29. Both have a shared story of progress mixed with missed opportunities. Today, we look at the outcomes of the conference that focuses on climate – COP29. It was largely a story of progress in some areas, but plenty of missed opportunities elsewhere. In the lead-up to COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, it was referred to as “the finance COP”. This was because of the importance of a new finance deal. The amount agreed – $300 billion a year – has largely been viewed as insufficient, but the increased number does at least acknowledge the scale of what is needed and can act as a foundation to build on. There were also meetings, partnerships and outcomes that focused specifically on the built environment, including the formalisation of the Intergovernmental Council on Buildings and Climate, and recognition of the built environment in official text, in the Sharm el-Sheikh mitigation ambition and implementation work programme. In 2023, we launched our net zero routemap. We did this because we know that we have a responsibility to address the role carbon plays in the built environment. Our sphere of influence means we can make a genuine difference and create real impact. We are doing this out of the desire to make a difference. To improve things. To deliver solutions that benefit three main areas: people, places and planet. We are fortunate that we have a degree of power in our hands. It is up to us to use that power to effect a tangible, positive change – we have both the ability and a responsibility to make this happen. Find out about examples of recent projects with decarbonisation services at their core in The Edit, our #annualreview: https://buro.im/3OCqO8r #BuroHappold #Engineering #YearInReview #AnnualReview #AnnualReport #Consultancy #BuroHappoldAdvisory
