We're proud to join some of the UK's leading businesses as part of the Building Back Britain Commission, to publish a new research report that examines the productivity of every local area in England. The findings show that a 1% boost in productivity across 146 local authorities could add an extra £16 billion to the economy annually, or £82 billion over the course of the Parliament demonstrating the significant impact a focused approach to local productivity can have on national economic growth. The Index ranking is based on thousands of official data points across five pillars that contribute to an area’s productivity. The pillars include access to health care, the quality of education on offer, the quality of digital infrastructure, the availability and standard of housing and access to public transport. We announced yesterday afternoon that we have acquired a portfolio of seven high quality retail parks for £441m, building on our market leading position in this subsector. To fund the acquisition, we raised c£300m from shareholders. Retail parks remain the preferred format for retailers and we have deployed over £700m into this subsector since the start of our financial year. In a trading update, we reported that the broader business continues to trade well with good leasing and cost discipline underpinning our profit performance. The UK government needs to embrace urban development and densification, or risk missing its 1.5 million homes mission. New research we've commissioned with Landsec and Berkeley Group Plc shows that urban communities are overwhelmingly 'YIMBY' (Yes in My Back Yard) when they are involved in the process of development, and its benefits are clearly understood. Developed by leading community engagement platform Commonplace, to give a true snapshot of those who live, rent and work in four major urban areas, our research finds that 73% of those polled believe underutilisation of brownfield sites is a wasted opportunity to deliver more affordable housing, public spaces and green places.
