As part of this year’s Heart Hero Awards, three of our most cutting-edge research projects have been shortlisted for an award - and you have the power to choose the winner! One of the research projects nominated for BHF Research Story of the Year 2024 is by Professor Charalambos Antoniades and his team at University of Oxford. Professor Antoniades’ BHF-funded research is developing an artificial intelligence (AI) tool that can predict people’s risk of having a heart attack, up to 10 years before it happens. In the first real-world trial of the AI tool in the NHS, the study was found to improve treatment for up to nearly half of those examined, indicating that this technology could potentially save thousands of lives. The largest independent funder of research into heart and circulatory diseases in the UK
About us
We are the British Heart Foundation. Our vision is a world free from the fear of heart and circulatory diseases. We raise money to research cures and treatments for the world’s biggest killers. We fund around £100 million of research each year into all heart and circulatory diseases and the things that cause them. Heart diseases. Stroke. Vascular dementia. Diabetes. They're all connected, and they're all under our microscope. We also help millions of people every year with our up to date information about heart and circulatory diseases so the UK public are better informed. We work hard to protect heart health and fight for better services for heart patients - communicating with politicians, government officials, workplaces and schools.

New BHF University of Leeds research presented over the weekend at the #ESCCongress shows the potential for AI to spot patients at highest risk of conditions such as kidney failure and diabetes. This could help people access life saving treatments earlier and lower their chances of heart-related death. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ewEjpN53.

Charlie and Oliver Woodhams from East Peckham are taking on the London to Brighton Off Road Bike Ride on the 21st of September to raise funds for our lifesaving research. Both father and son have been affected by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a serious inherited heart condition. Their journey began when Charlie’s father was diagnosed, leading to Charlie and Oliver both undergoing testing and finding out they carry the same genetic alteration. Despite facing their own health challenges, Charlie and Oliver are determined to make a difference. Charlie reflects, “My hope is that one day there will be a treatment for this condition that could be offered to my children. The more money I raise for the BHF, the more research they can do and bring that day a little closer.” We extend a heartfelt thank you to Charlie, Oliver, and everyone who has already signed up for the ride. Our research wouldn’t be possible without your help. For those still thinking about joining, we have a few spots left—don’t miss Europe's largest charity mountain bike event, find out more here: https://lnkd.in/gzqNH-s

40% of people on the cardiac care waiting list in England are waiting longer than the maximum target treatment time of 18 weeks. The longer people wait for treatment, the higher their risk of becoming disabled from heart failure or dying prematurely. Our #HeartsNeedMore campaign is calling on the new UK Government to make cardiovascular disease a health priority. Add your voice today: https://lnkd.in/ehwpQTG7.

Over the past six decades, we’ve made huge strides in improving outcomes for people living with heart and circulatory diseases in the UK. Today, this progress is at risk. We’re in the grip of a heart care crisis. At the end of June 2024, the heart care waiting list rose to 426,460 - the highest figure on record. Hundreds of thousands of people are waiting over the maximum target treatment time for potentially life-saving heart care in many parts of the UK. Long waits put people at a higher risk of avoidable heart attacks, heart failure and even premature death. Only with more protection, focus, and research breakthroughs can we give people hope for a brighter, healthier future. People who need heart care can't wait. Our #HeartsNeedMore. We’re calling on the new UK Government to prioritise heart disease, now. Demand action today: https://lnkd.in/ehwpQTG7.
