In last night's Hollyoaks epsiode, we saw Mercedes receive her chemotherapy start date for her #BowelCancer treatment. It's fantastic to see this represented on screen on one of the UK's most beloved soaps. Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells. You may have chemotherapy to treat the disease either on its own or together with other treatments. If you need any further information about chemotherapy and the different types, please visit our website: https://bit.ly/3WYM1wI

The earlier #BowelCancer is spotted, the more treatable it’s likely to be. The symptoms of bowel cancer can include: ◻️ bleeding from your bottom ◻️ blood in your poo ◻️ a change in your pooing habits. You might be going more or less often, or have diarrhoea or constipation that might come and go ◻️ losing weight but you’re not sure why ◻️ feeling very tired all the time but you’re not sure why ◻️ a pain or lump in your tummy Even if it’s just one of these symptoms, ask your GP about an at-home test. The UK Government have announced a National Cancer Plan for England! 👏 Yesterday, during a Westminster Hall debate about the need for a cancer strategy, the Minister of State for Care, Stephen Kinnock, revealed that the Government will publish a National Cancer Plan for England. This fulfils a long-held ambition of ours to secure a dedicated cancer plan to keep #BowelCancer treatment and care as a priority for the NHS. Now we’re calling for you, our community, to share your ideas to help shape this commitment. Currently only 38% of bowel cancer patients are diagnosed at the earliest stages and patients are waiting too long for crucial tests. To achieve our vision of a future where nobody dies of the disease, we need this plan to be fully funded and tackle the current issues in cancer care. Right now, the Government want to hear your ideas for improving the NHS. This is an opportunity for us all to call on them to focus this plan on early diagnosis for bowel cancer. Have your say: https://bit.ly/408dmA3

Today the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, shared her Autumn Budget. We’re delighted to see that an extra funding of £22.6 billion is going towards the Department of Health and Social Care to support NHS England. We now need our government to commit to a dedicated and fully funded 10-Year Cancer Plan that improves early diagnosis of bowel cancer.

We’re thrilled to be funding this fantastic project focusing on finding new treatment for people with familial adenomatous polyposis, otherwise known as FAP. Patients with this condition have an increased risk of #BowelCancer. Many have preventative surgery to remove their whole bowel which impacts their health and wellbeing. This project will help to find an alternative treatment. The research involved will increase our understanding of the condition and could have benefits for bowel cancer patients beyond just those with FAP. We’re here to help you and your colleagues gain a better understanding of #BowelCancer. Our awareness talks are delivered by our dedicated team of trained volunteers, many of whom have a personal connection to bowel cancer themselves. Each talk is bespoke and is a great way to increase knowledge of symptoms, risks and bowel cancer screening. If you’re interested in booking a bespoke talk for your business, organisation, or community group of 10 people or more, go to https://bit.ly/3zOSWRZ

As a part of #FreeWillsMonth we recently launched our ‘What will your greatest gift be?’ video. We’re incredibly grateful to the team at Lark for their help and expertise with this project. We’re also so thankful to the members of our community, Charlie, Chris and Sarah who shared why they’ve chosen to support us by leaving a gift in their Will. We couldn’t do what we do without people like them💛 To learn more about this project and how to leave a gift in your Will to us, go to: https://bit.ly/3NdDrWy

Lovely words from our Vice-Chair Kate Brown. We’re proud to have such committed and passionate Trustees. If you think you could be our new Chair, find out more: https://lnkd.in/eZnK-bFr.
As our much-respected current Chair, Richard Anderson, reaches the end of his term, Bowel Cancer UK is seeking its next Chair. In my role as Vice Chair I’ve been working with Juliet Taylor and her team at Starfish Search on the search. If you are interested or know someone who could be, please do take a look. The brief talks about the governance-level leadership opportunity of the role – we are a national charity, focused on the UK’s fourth cancer killer, a charity that is rapidly growing in size and profile and is saving lives. From that perspective alone the role of Chair has a lot to offer – and it’s certainly some of the reason I am proud to be Vice Chair. But there’s much more I gain from being part of the Board at Bowel Cancer UK – and if you’re looking at the role, I wanted to share that with you too. We’re a committed and engaged group of people bringing different perspectives and experience – medical, legal, communications, leadership, governance and more. I’ve learnt a lot over the years by listening to my colleagues. We have a shared goal of doing our best by the charity and by people affected by bowel cancer. We take that seriously. We think carefully about our role as a Board and how we can strengthen our governance and our individual contributions. We are proactive and planned around succession, and in appointing new waves of trustees and now a new Chair. I can really see the way the charity and our governance has evolved, and the baton those of us towards the end of our terms are passing to a strong future Board. Most of all, I enjoy the relationships that we have built, over time, between us. Our support and challenge, of each other and of Genevieve Edwards and her team, is real and meaningful and comes from knowing and valuing each other. We laugh, and when my term on the Board ends next year, I will miss the regular contact I have with my fellow board members through the cycle of meetings. As trustees of Bowel Cancer UK, all of this we have to offer our future Chair. You will be joining a Board that is strong in terms of process and relationships; and you will have the support and challenge of Angie Wiles Paul Latham Husna Grimes Owen Watson Lorraine Lander Tim Kerr Alastair McKinlay Ben Butler Alison Hill, Diana Tate, and Stephen Fenwick. You will gain, both from the real impact you will have, on Bowel Cancer UK and in fighting bowel cancer, and from the individual, human connections and interactions that make up the role. We hope you will consider joining us. https://lnkd.in/eV_wX-An

Six years ago, former United Rental Group Director , Bob Baillie and his wife, Anne, received the devastating news that their daughter, Emily, had been diagnosed with bowel cancer. Unfortunately, the cancer had spread into her lungs and she’s now classified as stage four. “I’m unbelievably proud of her. She’s positive, she doesn’t complain, she just gets on with it despite all the treatment and side effects” – Bob. His former colleagues at United Rental Group and its Licensees decided to organise a bike ride to support us and others just like Emily. This two-day cycle started in Norwich and ended 170 miles later at United’s HQ in Chesterfield. Together they’ve raised over incredible £37,000. Bob, Anne, and their grandson (and Emily’s son) Charlie took part in this fantastic event. “It’s been an incredible achievement by all involved and I want to thank them all. The money raised will towards an amazing cause and hopefully help people like Emily with support and information in the future.” – Bob. Every 12 minutes someone is diagnosed with bowel cancer in the UK. The money raised by United will help us continue to raise awareness of the disease and its symptoms. It will also provide expert information and support to patients and their families, and fund vital research. Additionally, it will support our campaign for early diagnosis and access to the best treatment and care. We’re incredibly grateful for their generous support. Our corporate partners never cease to amaze us with their phenomenal support. Discover all the ways you can become a corporate partner, here: https://bit.ly/4hkj2x9
