What is the real impact of fossil fuel divestment? Does it work? And how powerful is investor engagement when it comes to climate change? To help answer these questions, we commissioned a report to analyse the academic arguments for both engagement and divestment in what we hope is a constructive contribution to the debate over investment in fossil fuel companies. The report found evidence that engagement reaps rewards, but that there is very little evidence that divestment can trigger significant change through cost of capital impacts. For more on the report’s findings, read it in full on our website now: https://lnkd.in/eHJfdhvJ With thanks to Tom Gosling of London Business School for his independent insight in drafting this report.

Our £2.5bn Climate Opportunities proposition is a global portfolio but its investments include some that are closer to home, as highlighted in this article about Partner Fund Durham County Council. Demonstrating the benefits of scale and expertise brought by pooling, the The Northern Echo article focuses on Durham's commitment to Climate Opportunities which, in turn, invests into the Brookfield Green Transition Fund II, the owner of OnPath, an onshore wind developer base in the north-east. https://lnkd.in/eb4KJv_4

How can investors use engagement to help drive progress towards net zero? In a blog for ESG Investor, Climate Change Manager Teju Akande explains why methane reductions should be among the biggest targets for responsible investors. Contributing to 30% of current levels of global warming, reducing methane emissions has emerged as the quickest, simplest, and most affordable way to cut GHG levels in the atmosphere, providing faster climate benefits. Border to Coast continues to actively engage with companies to make a difference as a partnership committed to achieving net zero by 2050 or sooner, including: ➡ Direct engagement with oil and gas majors to reduce GHG emissions and make clear progress on achieving net zero by 2050; ➡ Collaborative engagement to encourage banks to incorporate just transition principles into net zero plans ➡ Strengthened our exclusion policy on coal and oil sands, not investing in companies where thermal coal power generation accounts for more than 50% of revenue in developed markets, and where thermal coal and oil sand production represents more than 25% of revenues.
Teju Akande, Climate Change Manager at Border To Coast Pensions Partnership, explains why and how institutional #investors can make #methane a critical focus area.
