VACANCY: Considerations in Medicine Editor-in-Chief 👨⚕️ We are looking for an ambitious and dynamic Editor-in-Chief to a newly relaunched journal within our 60+ journal portfolio. Considerations in Medicine is a broad scope multidisciplinary journal that welcomes research and reviews from across all medical disciplines and therapeutic areas. The journal aims to provide a home for all well-conducted research that will help to complete the scientific record. This includes medical research that is robust and reproducible including work showing incremental advances or null results. Considerations in Medicine is a hybrid subscription journal, offering authors a route to publication, without the barrier of publication fees. As a general medicine journal, the ideal candidate should be an established researcher or clinician from a speciality within the medical field but with a strong understanding of the multidisciplinary nature of the journal. They must be able to demonstrate the ability to provide feedback across a range of medical specialties. As Editor-in-Chief, you will act as the journal’s ambassador, collaborating closely with BMJ to build Considerations in Medicine into a global platform for the dissemination of useful research. Your role will involve upholding the journal's ethical standards and editorial policies, ensuring submissions meet its scientific criteria, and cultivating new areas of content to reflect emerging trends in medicine. You will be able to utilise your extensive international network of contacts to identify areas of growth and introduce new types of content or emerging subject areas to the journal. The ideal candidate will have a strong publication history and have some editorial experience handling manuscripts, possessing critical appraisal skills, a commitment to academic excellence, and strong leadership and interpersonal qualities. Joint applications are welcomed, and we encourage candidates from all parts of the world to apply. We are particularly interested in candidates who can represent regions where open access fees may pose a challenge to publication. The time commitment is estimated at the equivalent of one day per week, but will depend on the structure and size of the editorial team. To be considered for the role, please send your CV and a covering letter outlining your interest and relevant experience. Applications and any queries regarding the role should be sent to the journal Publisher, Robyn Taylor ([email protected]). Interviews will be held via video conference. 🎤 📰 »This is probably the most challenging time that medical journals have ever had« Our editor in chief of The BMJ, Kamran Abbasi, was in #Denmark last week for the conference Tour de Health’24. The Journal of the Danish Medical Association met him at the conference and asked about the challenges medical journals face, transparency, and the British healthcare system. What do you see as the most important challenge medical journals are facing in the years to come? In my view, this is probably the most challenging time that medical journals have ever had. Over the last couple of decades, things have become disruptive with the challenge of going online, the whole notion of open access, etc. Being very resilient, medical journals have continued very much in the same way despite the challenges. But I think it has become much more acute now with the digital transformation and people getting their information from social media, predatory and fraudulent publications. What we saw during the pandemic was that people were debating science and data on social media. The sense of trying to regulate that conversation and ideally promoting or publishing reasonable arguments has all gone out the window on social media. People will say and interpret research and data in the way they want to. It’s created a whole issue around how you trust information, and that has created a very precarious situation for medical journals. So, what should medical journals do to address those challenges? I think the responsibility of medical journals now is to stick to their principles. Of course, try to publish the best science and rely on real transparency and trust. When we get it wrong, and occasionally we do, we have to be very clear and proactive and correct or retract research if needed. We also need to bring back the debate from where it’s been sort of hijacked by social media and say if you want to have a serious conversation about research, that we published, our journals are the place to have that conversation.
