Our short video today is all about Spinning, Twisting and Plying. We can create Worsted spun and Woollen spun yarns, all done under one roof in our mill. Woollen spun yarns are made with the fibres smoothed out (carded), but left lying higgledy-piggledy in all directions. This means: they trap air, and are lofty, bulky and fluffy compared to worsted spun yarns. Worsted spun yarns are made with the fibres smoothed out (carded), then aligned (gilled, drawn or pin drafted) and combed, which removes all the shorter and coarser bits. Worsted spun yarns feel softer because they are made to be smoother, so for the same breed a worsted spun yarn will feel less ‘scratchy’ than a woollen spun yarn. We'll be sharing our final video about the Finishing stage on Monday. In the meantime, we hope you have a great weekend. #spinning #wool #spinningmill #madeincornwall #madeinbritain #sustainableproducts #sustainable #yarns #worsted Colin Spencer Halsey Beki Gilbert

About us
We are The Natural Fibre Company and Blacker Yarns, making the finest quality knitting and weaving yarns from British and regional breeds of wool, mohair and alpaca. We provide a commission processing service for fibre producers and trade businesses, spinning batches from 30kg to 1 tonne or more. We can work with small batches. As Blacker Yarns we make and sell our own brand of high quality knitting and crochet yarns, from specially chosen and hand sorted fibre - all from British sheep. We also publish knitting patterns, market gifts, scour and card fleece and much more. All our yarns are spun by The Natural Fibre Company under one roof in Cornwall, UK. We are unique, making both combed (worsted spun) and carded (woollen spun) yarns under the same roof and providing end to end processing services for our customers, thereby limiting our carbon footprint. Please see our websites: www.thenaturalfibre.co.uk and www.blackeryarns.co.uk for further information or contact us at [email protected] or [email protected].

Today's short video is all about Carding, Gilling and Combing. This is stage three of the process of making yarn. During Carding the fibre is brushed to create a continuous web, enabling it to be rolled into rovings. #manufacturing #spinningmill #wool #fibre #naturalfibres #fashion #textiles #yarns #carding #madeincornwall #madeinbritain #sustainableproducts Colin Spencer Halsey Beki Gilbert

Our office is gorgeous, however it is based in an old cotton spinning mill. In the summer it's boiling, but in the winter it is baltic. Saw these beauties pop up on my newsfeed on Monday and knew I had to get them! So ideal for typing with cold hands 🤗 They are made with love in Cornwall ❤️ Get yours here: https://lnkd.in/e8XjaVT4 The Natural Fibre Company

Throughout this week we're sharing a series of short videos that demonstrate the individual stages of wool processing that take place at our mill. This is stage two, the scouring and drying phase. Scouring is the industrial washing of raw fibre. As well as providing the full service from raw fleece to finished yarn, we also offer a Scour and Card or Scour and Dry only service. #manufacturing #scouring #fibre #naturalfibres #wool #ukmanufacturing #fashion #textiles #yarns #sustainableproducts Colin Spencer Halsey Beki Gilbert

The first stage in the journey from turning the raw fleece that arrives in sacks at the mill into beautiful yarn is the preparation, which involves sorting and grading. Here is a short video showing our process. #woolmonth #wool #naturalfibres #spinningmill #madeincornwall #madeinbritain #ukmanufacturer #manufacturing #underoneroof #sustainable #sustainableproducts Colin Spencer Halsey Beki Gilbert

We've recently collaborated with Falmouth University to produce a series of six short films to showcase our expertise working with wool and other natural fibres, and to provide a step by step guide to wool processing for our customers. Here's the first one, featuring our CEO Colin Spencer Halsey presenting an overview of the business and our capabilities. Special thanks to Ged England for filming/production, Chris Hassall and Falmouth Launchpad Futures for supporting this project. #woolmonth #wool #manufacturing #ukmanufacturing #smallbusiness #researchanddevelopment #spinningmill #madeincornwall #madeinbritain #tradecustomers #fashion #textiles #textilesourcing #sustainable Beki Gilbert

Next in our new Ready-made Accessories collection are these stylish Fingerless Mitts, made from 60% Guanaco/40% Blue-Faced Leicester wool. Both practical and comfortable to wear, and the perfect winter warmers for your hands at this chilly time of year. The Guanaco fibre has been sourced from Penryn, Cornwall and the Blue-Faced Leicester wool from Honiton, Devon. This unique blend of Guanaco (with guard hairs/without being de-haired) and BFL yarn was created originally as a research and development project and is now being reused/repurposed. Our product tags are made from 100% wood and produced from waste from a local timber manufacturer, Cornish Timber Products, are sewn on by hand and stamped with a non-toxic and acid-free ink. Our swing tags are produced by a local printer and small business, Launceston Print. Here's a glimpse of the project that our design assistant, Katie Waller has been busy working on recently with some of our limited edition yarns. We think the subtle combination of the fawn/brown-coloured Guanaco/Blue Faced Leicester yarn and the super soft, cream Ewe-nique Pure Merino yarn works beautifully together. We're transforming these limited edition yarns, created from our #researchanddevelopment trials, into bespoke, new products which we'll be launching very soon on here: https://lnkd.in/eAw_EqtV #comingsoon #wool #woolmonth #newdesigns #madeincornwall #limitededitionyarns #machineknitted #machineknitting #yarns #sustainablefashion #sustainableliving Colin Spencer Halsey Beki Gilbert
