This #BlackHistoryMonth we're highlighting stories of reclaimed narratives. Sandra Igwe from The Motherhood Group tells her journey into maternal health advocacy which began with a traumatic birthing experience. "It became clear to me that there was a pressing need for safe spaces where Black mothers could connect, share their experiences, learn from each other, and advocate for better care." "The journey of establishing and growing The Motherhood Group has been filled with both triumphs and challenges. One of the most rewarding aspects has been witnessing the growth of our community and the profound impact we’ve had on countless Black mothers’ lives." This #BlackJoyFriday let's celebrate Colin Grant, the author of several books, including a 2008 biography of Marcus Garvey entitled 'Negro with a Hat: The Rise and Fall of Marcus Garvey and His Dream of Mother Africa' and and his 2023 memoir, 'I'm Black So You Don't Have To Be'. His historical brilliance and ability to reclaim narratives is a prime example of what we should celebrate this #BlackHistoryMonth. #ColinGrant #BlackAuthors #MarcusGarvey #AfricanDiaspora #BHM2024 #BlackHistory

We’re saddened to hear of the loss of Lord Herman Ouseley who dedicated his life to fighting racial injustice. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and loved ones during this time 🕊️
"Reclaiming Narratives" is taking control of our future and having agency and self determination in a toxic environments which tries to dehumanise us every second of the day. it is also celebrating small acts of achievement and validation of who we are #BlackHistoryMonth #LinkedInNewsUK

According to reports, the Windrush scandal had its origins in laws that were specifically designed to strip Black and Asian people of their rights to live in the UK. 'The Historical Roots Of The Windrush Scandal', concludes that the scandal was the culmination of three decades of racist immigration laws designed to reduce the UK’s non-white population. In the Windrush judgment the Tribunal quoted ‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.' Without understanding of the past a repeat is likely. The best way to learn and understand from the past is to implement the Wendy Williams recommendation for reconciliation events. We once again urge the Government to implement the Wendy Williams recommendations and finally provide justice for the Windrush generation. #WindrushScandal #BlackHistory #UKImmigration #WendyWilliamsRecommendations #JusticeForWindrush #ReconciliationEvents

We're continuing the conversation around Black maternal mental health 🖤 For instances of perinatal mental illness that result in hospital admissions, Black patients are more than twice as likely to be admitted than their white counterparts. Our healthcare services need to better understand the inequalities Black and Asian women face, and create community services that are culturally sensitive, and therefore more accessible for ethnic minorities. There needs to be a commitment by the Government to improve maternal services safety and to close the Black and Asian maternal mortality gap. #BlackMaternalMentalHealth #PerinatalMentalIllness #HealthcareInequalities #CulturallySensitiveCare #MaternalHealthcare #GovernmentCommitment #BlackHealthMatters
