Sustainability and holistic design go hand in hand. Gardens by the Bay is an example of this, specifically the ‘Supertrees’ which are a series of magical vertical gardens that range from 25m - 50m in height and have become emblematic of Singapore. They are a direct result of the sites unique environmental strategy. 1)Biomass Energy Integration: The National Park authority is responsible for pruning large quantities of trees across Singapore. This provided a ready supply of bio-mass that could be used to provide heating and cooling energy for the biomes. This necessitated a chimney and thus the Supertree concept was born. As the Supertree design evolved, they expanded to incorporate other environmental features: 1)Solar Energy Harvesting: Several Supertrees are equipped with photovoltaic cells that capture solar energy. This renewable energy is used to power the lighting systems of the supertrees, reducing reliance on external electricity sources. 2)Rainwater Collection: The Supertrees are equipped to collect rainwater which is then used for irrigation and various water features throughout the gardens. This practise minimizes water wastage and promotes efficient water management. 3)Natural ventilation and cooling: By providing shade and enhancing natural ventilation, the Supertrees contribute to cooling the surrounding areas. This helps ,mitigate the urban heat island effect, creating a cooler microclimate within the gardens and reducing the need for energy-intensive cooling methods. 4)Biodiversity Enhancement: The vertical gardens on the Supertrees support a wide variety of plants, including over 200 species and varieties of orchids, bromeliads and tropical climbers. This biodiversity not only beautifies the space but also supports local ecosystems by providing habitats for insects and birds. We’re delighted to see 8 Bleeding Heart Yard with GROUPWORK shortlisted in the ‘Positive Addition (>£5m)’ category at the AJ Retrofit Awards 2024! The project saw the transformation of a 1970s office block situated in the Hatton Garden Conservation Area Clerkenwell for Seaforth. Our team designed the building services for the renovation, which retained most of the original building and expanded the space with a two-storey CLT roof extension and five-storey rear extension. The building provides modern office and ground floor retail space.
