Travelling by rail provides many sustainable and economic benefits. But how can we ensure our rail networks are set up to provide users with reliable, resilient and safe transport? We spoke to our experts Fiona Tiley, Associate Director, Jenny Henderson MEng CEng MICE MSt, Senior Engineer, as well as Stephen Rowley, Technical Director and Dominic Baldwin, Programme Director at SYSTRA, to share their thoughts on whether improvements to reliability, resilience and safety can help to rebuild confidence in our railways. To learn more, you can read the Rail and Urban Transport Review we've developed with the UK government, here: https://bit.ly/4erfUNE #WeAreArup #Rail #Transport #Railway #Reliability #Resilience #RailSafety

I’m pleased to have recently been awarded the 2024 Institute of Acoustics Engineering Medal. The medal is awarded in even-numbered years to registered engineers at Chartered, Incorporated or Engineering Technician grade in recognition of their outstanding contribution in the field of acoustical engineering. It’s an honor to join Arup Legend Derek Sugden who was awarded the medal in 2012. I’ve had the privilege of working on incredible landmark projects around the globe in so many sectors that I enjoy and that make an impact on people’s lives including arts & culture, sports, education, transport, and the virtual and augmented worlds. I’m particularly proud to have led the development of the Arup SoundLab our immersive acoustic space which allows collaboration with clients to hear the sound of any their sonic environments - existing or conceptual. The Arup SoundLab recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. I’ve been a member of the Institute of Acoustics for over 30 years and as a graduate followed their CPD program to achieve Chartered Engineer status. The Institute has gone from strength to strength and has had an enormous positive impact on the consideration of acoustics across the built and natural environment. I’m proud of the collective achievements of all its members in this regard. The IOA celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year. Thank you to all the clients, collaborators and colleagues who I’ve had the fortune to work with over the years, to the institute for this acknowledgement, and to IOA President Alistair Somerville for presenting the award. #wearearup Arup Institute of Acoustics #acoustics #soundlab #ArupFellows

There is still time to register and join The Academy of Urbanism (AoU) Conference this Friday. I'll be speaking on my favourite topic, how to de-gender cities. If you can't make the conference but are interesting in hearing more on the topic, please drop me a message. 🎟 Tickets here:https://lnkd.in/eUKZxTuX #arup #citiesforwomen

The Macau Bridge, the latest vehicular link between the Macau Peninsula and Taipa, is officially open after four and a half years of construction. This impressive 3.08km structure, with its two-way, eight-lane design, features a 2.85km sea-crossing segment. By connecting the Macau Port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the adjacent New Urban Zone A to the New Urban Zone E1 in Taipa, this bridge significantly eases traffic congestion and enhances Macau’s integration with the Greater Bay Area. Unlike other bridges in the city, the Macau Bridge features wind protection barriers that ensure it remains operational even during typhoon signal 8. The Bridge also incorporates essential utilities to support the development of nearby new urban zones. We played a crucial role in this project, offering project management, cost management and site supervision consultancy services for this monumental infrastructure development, marking a step towards a more integrated and prosperous future for Macau and its neighbouring regions. Known as the ‘Cheese Grater’, the Leadenhall Building is one of the landmarks within the City of London, UK. Carefully designed to preserve views to St Paul’s Cathedral, the 225-metre building has become an exemplar of the symbiotic relationship between architecture and engineering. Reducing construction time by prefabricating 85% of the finished building off-site, our design enabled a significantly taller building than usual for such a sensitive location without compromising on lettable area. Explore how we brought this iconic building to life: https://bit.ly/3N8SvES #WeAreArup #CTBUH2024 #UrbanDevelopment #TallBuildings #NeworRenew #SustainableDevelopment #Leadenhall Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH)

Today marks a significant milestone for the UK in its energy system decarbonisation journey. The last coal-fired power station at Ratcliffe-on-Soar is shutting down for the final time, after operating for more than 50 years. It’s iconic cooling towers, buildings and other structures will be decommissioned to pave way for redevelopment opportunities including the ambition of a low-carbon energy generation for the East Midlands. We’re proud to be a part of this pivotal environmental and sustainability journey. This includes supporting the creation of a vision for the post site closure and helping to translate this into a Masterplan. Alongside our work with key local and regional stakeholders, we have also supported Uniper and the Local Planning Authority through the successful Local Development Order (LDO). The redevelopment of carbon-based generation assets contributes significantly to achieving net-zero targets. This is one of many examples where we are collaborating with clients across the globe to realise their net-zero transition goals. It was an amazing experience to see the UCL PEARL facility in action recently at a special launch event. Below is a short video outlining why this type of research is so important and how it will tie into the work my team does in Arup's People Movement discipline, where we help shape space for all users across the built environment. #arup #peoplemovement #NeuroArchitecture

How can an unused railway site be reimagined as a nature-positive urban space? We’re thrilled that our design to regenerate a former industrial railway site owned by FS Sistemi Urbani in Comune di Bologna has won the C40 Cities Reinventing Cities competition. Located about three kilometres to the north-west of the city, the Green Soul redevelopment proposal will recast the Ravoni-Prati district as an urban link, with a new rail station and bridge playing a strategic role for reconnecting the area. The neighbourhood will promote a sustainable lifestyle, where the landscape is in synergy with the ‘nature-positive’ community, becoming a key element for the resilient response to climate change and a driver for decarbonisation. We’ll be working as the lead architect and urban planner on the masterplan for the site, alongside real estate developer Nhood Services Italy and Politecnico di Milano as environmental expert. Originally built in the 1970s, Quay Quarter Tower (QQT) is not only a landmark building in Sydney’s Circular Quay but also an example of retrofit using a circular economy approach. Developed with 3XN/GXN, our circular retrofit design approach retained 98% of the building's original structure, saving approximately 12,000 tonnes of embodied carbon. In addition to its sustainability credentials, the building outstands for being the world’s first example of double-deck lifts retrofitted into a premium-grade commercial tower.
