Coastal cities have long thrived as bustling hubs of trade and culture. But with climate change altering our shorelines, we face new challenges. Rising seas, fiercer storms, and erosion demand urgent solutions. At Hunter's Point South in NYC, we’re leading by example. This former industrial zone is now a beacon of sustainable development, harmonizing with nature to guard against floods and rising tides. Hear more from Vincent Lee, Principal, on Hunter's Point South and explore the actions were taking to build resilience into coastal cities: https://lnkd.in/g4B9brDS #WeAreArup #ChangingCoastlines #UrbanResilience #ClimateAction #HuntersPointSouth

Our cities our getting hotter globally and we know that urban heat often affects those most vulnerable. In this interview with Forbes, hear from our Global Nature Positive Lead, Dima Zogheib alongside United Nations Habitat Chief Heat Officer Eleni (Lenio) Myrivili on how digital tools can help us understand, mitigate and adapt for extreme weather consequences driven by climate change, putting solutions at the front and centre of design. https://lnkd.in/eCtuJx_U #WeAreArup #ClimateResilience #Heatwaves #FuturePlanning

How can machine learning and data analytics help safeguard over 110,000 residents living and working in a town facing increased flood risk posed by climate change? In the latest issue of The Arup Journal, learn about the Mansfield Sustainable Flood Resilience project and our innovative approach, using nature-based solutions to transform Mansfield, a town in northern England, into a place that absorbs stormwater like a sponge. Read our latest Arup Journal to see how we’re blending technology and nature to create sustainable towns and cities: https://lnkd.in/efrjwbfs #WeAreArup #ArupJournal #ClimateChange #Resilience #FloodResilience

What constitutes 'good' building performance? Historically, it has been viewed through the lens of cost and comfort, but as our world rapidly changes technologically, socially and environmentally, "it's time to raise our eyes to the horizon and challenge our assumptions about what 'good' looks like," says Fiona Cousins, our Americas Chair and CIBSE President We were recently commissioned by CIBSE to develop the Building Performance Reimagined report: a holistic and future-oriented perspective on building performance that goes beyond traditional realms of evaluation. London is a resilient city, but climate impacts are testing that resilience. Extreme heat, intense rainfall, and sea level rise are translating into risks across the capital. Water scarcity, #heatwaves, #flooding and #wildfires are already leading to loss of life, and damage or disruption to the infrastructure we all depend on. It will get worse unless we design for the future. That is why the final report of the #LondonClimateResilienceReview, published today by Emma Howard Boyd CBE and her team, is such an important step in preparing London for increasing climate impacts. It looks at what is currently happening in the city, examining our climate resilience today, and asks the big question: what more do we have to do? This is a call to organisations across London to take action – we need radical collaboration. Everyone has role play - businesses, schools, community groups, local and national government. Its also a call to other cities to follow the Mayor of London's lead and look at how climate change is affecting your city. Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/es2ThKqf
Today we published the interim report of the #LondonClimateResilienceReview which says that London is underprepared for #climate impacts like #flooding and #heatwaves and calls for a step change in the UK’s #climateadaptation. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/e9ih3Gzi London has many good plans and programmes to prepare for climate hazards but we need to recognise that Londoners now face lethal risks, and a step change is needed. Last year was the hottest on record and this is causing chaos and disruption all over the world. London is not immune, as shown by the flash #floods in 2021 and 40C #heatwave in 2022. I am really pleased that the Mayor has agreed to support an extreme heat exercise to prepare for even more severe heatwaves than we saw in 2022. This is a positive step that will help London organisations plan to protect more Londoners in future shocks. In the absence of national leadership, regional government has a more significant role to play. We need pace not perfection. It’s time for the UK, led by its cities and regions, to take action and prioritise adaptation. That is an opportunity to make the UK economy more climate resilient, to protect the most vulnerable, to preserve all that we love about London and to show leadership to other cities nationally and globally. #RacetoResilience #ClimateAdaptation #ClimateAction #ClimateChange #Infrastructure #Water #ClimateResilience #Resilience #ExtremeWeather Photo credit: https://lnkd.in/dUQgbM4E

In our built environment, every building, street and neighbourhood offers us a chance to embrace circular design. Learn more about how to unlock positive circular change at scale in Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s new report, Building Prosperity. It identifies tangible, investible actions to deliver significant economic, environmental and social benefits for the built environment. #WeAreArup
The moment is now. We’re excited to officially launch our new report, Building Prosperity: Unlocking the potential of a nature-positive, circular economy for Europe. The study shows that a targeted set of investable and scalable actions in the built environment sector can deliver significant economic, environmental, and social benefits for Europe, increasing resilience, competitiveness, and the vibrancy of its cities. It also aims to show that circular and nature-positive strategies can be applied across sectors. The circular built environment can propel Europe towards a prosperous and nature-positive future. It’s here – in this sector – we must sow the seeds of change. And we can start right now. Read it today: https://lnkd.in/eZJ6G2_z #CircularEconomy

How can underground rail improve a city’s livability? Copenhagen has expanded its metro system with five new underground stations, connecting the city centre to the southern harbour district Sydhavn and the neighbourhood Valby. The extension of the M4 metro line aims to improve citywide mobility, alleviate congestion, and promote the development of neighbourhoods in the south of the Danish capital. We delivered architecture, structural engineering, geotechnics, and tunnel ventilation design services to TUNN3L JV, the project’s design & build contractor. Previously, we worked on the M3 loop line Cityringen and the M4 line extension to Nordhavn for the The Copenhagen Metro and Greater Copenhagen Light Rail, supporting the growth of the city's low carbon metro network. Understanding how communities experience racial inequity is critical to helping us shape inclusive urban environments. Perhaps a negative perception of a place is deterring investment and development, or residents are underrepresented in decision making positions meaning their needs are not considered. Together with decosm and Social Broadcasts, we partnered with residents from marginalised communities in two areas of London (Newham and Thamesmead) to explore how communities experience, engage with, and are affected by the built environment. Our new report introduces a framework that urban practitioners, of any discipline, can use to understand how their decisions directly and indirectly impact people living in the cities and spaces they design. We call these areas of impact the ‘layers of the city’: narratives, agency & power, interactions, spaces, and systems. Learn more and discover how you can share your own thoughts and insights or collaborate with us to put these insights into practice on projects: https://lnkd.in/edZuA-34 #WeAreArup #RacialEquity
