Maya Angelou said, "History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again." Annually, March 25 is the International Day for Remembrance of the Victims of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, day to remember the horrors slaves suffered and honour their memories. You might wonder the reason for such, after all, the slave trade ended centuries ago. Nonetheless, history is a part of us that should neither be erased, nor cast aside. Movies like "Roots," "Twelve Years a Slave," "Harriet," and "Django Unchained" all portrayed the lives of slaves and the horrors of the slave trade. In 1856, a slave named Margaret Garner and her family escaped a plantation in Kentucky, USA, and fled to Ohio. Facing an imminent capture, she killed her daughter to prevent her from returning to a lifetime of slavery. This spine-chilling act formed the basis for Toni Morrison's Pulitzer prize-winning book, "Beloved." On this day, let us remember those who lost their lives in ships, on plantations, in the daring act of escaping, or at the cruel hands of slave masters, and do our little bit to spread love and affection, regardless of class, race, or skin colour.
