🤔 What if there was a way for humanitarian organisations to simultaneously make their work more evidence-driven and locally-led? Mercy Corps highlights how participatory evidence and learning methods can bridge this gap. By prioritising community agency throughout the evidence lifecycle — from defining indicators to participatory action research — local voices and priorities become central. One powerful example is their use of "outcome journals" in 🇳🇬 Nigeria. Community members defined their own progress markers, collected and analyzed data, and recommended actions — owning the process. This collaborative approach fosters trust, accountability and sustainability by harnessing the expertise of both communities and international NGOs. However, challenges remain in truly ceding power, aligning with local governance needs, and forging equitable partnerships. 💡 Did you know that humanitarian responses often exclude and marginalise LGBTI+ people? This lack of inclusion can lead to life-threatening situations and increased discrimination. In this insightful commentary post🖋️ , Cristina de Nicolás Izquierdo highlights the importance of ensuring that humanitarian organisations respond adequately to the needs of LGBTI+ individuals. She emphasises the need for a diverse, inclusive lens in evaluating humanitarian action. Some key takeaways: ✅ Applying a SOGIESC (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, and Sex Characteristics) inclusion lens to evaluations is crucial for creating a safe, equitable environment. ✅ The gender-diverse approach strengthens accountability to affected populations by avoiding perpetuating power imbalances and discrimination. ✅ Evaluation guidance should provide clear advice on mainstreaming gender diversity and inclusion, such as making it a mandatory part of every evaluation.
