AKE’s #MOTW highlights widespread protests that erupted countrywide in #Mexico on 25 August – including in Mexico City, Michoacan, Puebla, Leon, Jalisco, Oaxaca, Veracruz and other states – against incumbent President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s proposed constitutional reforms. The reforms include subjecting judgeships to elections, reducing the number of Supreme Court justices from 11 to 9 and removing seven autonomous bodies. Demonstrators argued the controversial reforms would strengthen presidential power and threaten judicial independence. This came after a nationwide judicial strike kicked off on 21 August. On 23 August the electoral authorities allocated the ruling Morena party coalition 73 per cent of the seats in the lower house of Congress. With Morena’s supermajority, the lower house overwhelmingly approved the judicial overhaul on 4 September. While Morena is one senator short from a two-thirds majority, the bill – to be debated on 11 September in the Senate – is expected to pass. Further strikes and protests against what is widely perceived as Mexico’s democratic backsliding are likely ahead and following the vote.

AKE's #MOTW highlights widespread protests in #Indonesia on 22-23 August against attempts by parliament to revise the local election law in defiance of a 21 August Constitutional Court ruling. Hundreds of injuries were reported nationwide amid clashes that broke out between security forces and protesters. Over 300 demonstrators were detained and at least 11 journalists were injured in #Jakarta alone. The unrest successfully prompted the legislature to rescind the revision. Nonetheless, further sporadic protests cannot be ruled out as the forthcoming change of government in October and local elections in November are likely to elevate risks of civil unrest and political instability.

AKE’s #MOTW highlights #Ukraine’s continued cross-border offensive into #Russia’s Kursk Oblast, where Kyiv has retained a significant foothold since launching its incursion on 6 August. Over the weekend of 16-18 August Ukrainian forces destroyed three bridges over the Seim River in the oblast to create more defensible lines – the former two near Glushkovo and Zvannoe on 16 August and the third near Karyzh on 18 August. On 20 August Ukrainian forces claimed they controlled 1,263 square km of Russian territory in the region – up a quarter on last week. However, the claims have not been independently confirmed and media access to the region remains highly restricted.  Heavy fighting has continued across the Glushkovsky, Korenvsky, Sudzha and Lgovsky districts of the oblast. Russia has deployed additional conscript forces to the front but has refrained from re-deploying its most elite units fighting on the fronts in Kharkiv and Donetsk Oblasts. Ukrainian forces have managed to consolidate their position as Moscow prepares for a major counter-offensive. Fighting will likely escalate in the coming days.

AKE’s #MOTW shows escalating clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El-Fasher, North Darfur; Khartoum State; and Sennar State. The RSF has stepped up its attacks on El-Fasher with the aim of seizing the last significant SAF stronghold in the Darfur region. This move would allow the RSF to secure control over critical mining areas in western Sudan. As peace talks were scheduled to resume on 14 August, the SAF opted not to participate, citing ongoing violations of humanitarian provisions in the Jeddah Agreement by the RSF. With another round of negotiations failing to achieve a ceasefire, the western, southern and capital regions of Sudan are expected to face escalating instability in the coming weeks.

AKE’s #MOTW highlights the outbreak of far-right protests fuelled by Islamophobic and anti-immigrant disinformation across the #UnitedKingdom (UK). Over the weekend of 2-4 August several police officers were injured and dozens of people were detained as protests spread to cities including Liverpool, Bristol and Manchester. Rioters looted stores, clashed with police and targeted mosques and asylum centres. The unrest came after on 29 July three children were killed and 10 others were injured in a stabbing attack by a 17-year-old suspect in Southport. Police stated the attack was not linked to extremism but far-right groups claimed that the assailant was Muslim, triggering the unrest.    As of 8 August, over 400 people have been arrested in connection with the violence. Authorities announced new security measures at mosques and increased police presence to prevent attacks. On 8 August Prime Minister Keir Starmer instructed police to remain on "high alert", with police braced for the potential of further unrest in the coming days. Authorities have also clamped down on disinformation online. While violent protests have decreased over the last few days, tensions remain elevated and the risk of unrest is high.
