GreenCo’s Chief Commercial Officer, Cathy Oxby, spent an intense week in Marrakech recently providing her input as one of the co-authors of the revised edition of Power Africa’s widely acclaimed Understanding Power Project Finance Handbook. The Handbook is part of the highly successful "Understanding" series of handbooks (over 75,000 printed copies and extensive downloads) which provide guidance on best practice for power project development in Africa. Facilitated by the U.S. Department of Commerce's Commercial Law Development Program (CLDP) and the The African Legal Support Facility (ALSF), the revised edition highlights important evolutions in the sector since the first edition. These include the development of power markets and the associated emergence of new offtake structures, such as traders like GreenCo. The Handbook also explores the growth of climate-focused financing solutions in the form of sustainability bonds and carbon credits. Reflecting on the process, Cathy noted “It was a real pleasure to spend the week with such a diverse group of experts in the African energy sector. We collectively sought to identify the practical challenges faced by both public and private sector parties in financing power projects in today’s environment and to propose potential solutions based on what has worked elsewhere. We worked closely and intensively to channel our respective knowledge, experience and perspectives into what will hopefully be a very useful book for many. “ You can access the handbooks here: https://lnkd.in/eY2pZurf
Africa GreenCo
Services for Renewable Energy
Leading innovation and sustainably transforming renewable energy markets
About us
Africa GreenCo aims to increase private sector investment in energy generation in sub-Saharan Africa by mitigating the credit risks associated with the current lack of creditworthy offtakers. Current weak financial position of utilities and limited choice of an alternate buyer in case of utility default deters private capital. An intermediary aggregator between buyers and sellers can help attract sustainable investments in the power sector on the strength of a multi-buyer model. Its role as a financially sustainable intermediary offtaker and power trading company can also stimulate regional electricity trading and facilitate more efficient use of available and new resources by optimising them on a regional basis. Through its activities Africa GreenCo will increase the supply of, and the demand for, finance for energy projects, and mobilize private sector capital more quickly towards critical and transformative capacity additions, reducing pressure on utilities as well as financial liabilities for sovereign governments.

We’re excited to share that a pivotal new research paper, "Evolving Competitive Markets in SAPP: Leveraging Competitive Wholesale Electricity Markets to Drive Renewable Generation Capacity in the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP)", was recently published by a research team at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). This study delves into the barriers and opportunities for renewable energy expansion within the SAPP region, addressing strategies to enhance market entry and increase investor confidence. Authored by Jarrad Wright, Christina Simeone, PhD, Faith Martinez Smith , and our own Engineer - Research Lead, Mbiko Banda, the paper offers practical solutions and strategic options aimed at fostering a more competitive and interconnected energy market across Southern Africa. It explores key challenges like transmission infrastructure limitations, regulatory inconsistencies, and barriers to renewable energy investment that impact market functionality and project viability. By proposing approaches to address these issues, the research underscores how structured reforms within SAPP could unlock new opportunities for renewable energy deployment and improved grid resilience. We extend our congratulations to Mbiko Banda for her contribution to this significant research, reflecting GreenCo's commitment to shaping a resilient and sustainable energy landscape across the region.
