Boeing continues autonomous flight trials at Snowdonia Aerospace Centre’s Llanbedr Airfield in Gwynedd, north Wales. Boeing has completed a second phase of autonomous systems flight trials and carried out a representative Air Launched Effect (ALE) mission at Snowdonia Aerospace Centre. As part of these latest trials, four fixed-wing Albatross Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) were teamed to carry out a mission to detect and jam a radio frequency emitting from an enemy target. Each UAV was equipped with a mission system and used multispectral machine vision and novel search algorithms to respond to its environment and fellow teaming platforms. Phase two trials incorporate new capabilities such as autonomous platform-to-platform teaming that can target a position from a greater range and allows the platforms to cover more ground with higher confidence in target identity and location. The trials were carried out with support from Phantom Works Global and The University of Manchester. Boeing UK has a workforce of 4000 and has spent more than £13.7bn with the UK supply chain since 2015. The company has facilities at Gatwick, Sheffield and RAF Lossiemouth. Minister for Social Partnership within Llywodraeth/Welsh Government, Jack Sargeant MS, has this week visited Aerospace Wales member GE Aerospace’s Nantgarw facility and met the latest intake of apprentices. Airbus Helicopters and Sikorsky walk away from UK NMH contest at 11th hour. Original article from Dominic Perry, FlightGlobal. Leonardo Helicopters is the sole remaining bidder for the UK’s ongoing New Medium Helicopter (NMH) contest after rivals Airbus Helicopters and Sikorsky confirmed they were withdrawing from the competition. With bids for the NMH requirement due to be submitted by close of play on 30 August there had been rumours over the preceding weeks that Airbus and Sikorsky were on the verge of pulling out of the contest. If selected, Airbus had planned to build the H175M at a new final assembly line at Broughton in north Wales – the site of its commercial aircraft wing facility – using the plant to serve both domestic and export customers. Although the absence of other bidders would seem to pave the way for the AW149’s selection, there is no guarantee that the contest will proceed. Under the most recent timeline, a contract was due to be awarded to the winning bidder in 2025.
