Preparing youth in Africa with the skills to succeed in today’s economy

About us

Africa has the world’s youngest and fastest-growing population. By 2035, the continent is poised to contribute more people to the global workforce each year than the rest of the world combined. At Educate! we're obsessed with impact. We leverage iterative learning to build highly scalable youth employment solutions aimed at unlocking the potential of the world’s youngest continent. Educate! prepares youth in Africa to learn, earn and thrive in today’s economy by: 1) introducing an employment-focused school subject into secondary, and 2) delivering livelihood bootcamps for out-of-school youth, with a focus on marginalized rural girls and young women. Our work has been validated by several independent evaluations, which found positive outcomes on income, employment, gender equity, family planning and sexual and reproductive health, educational attainment, and climate change resilience. To date, more than 380,000 youth have been meaningfully impacted across Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya, and along the way, Educate! has become the largest youth employment and skills provider in East Africa.

Designing scalable, innovative, accessible, and impactful education programs that make African Youth thrive.

In your org/company, have you ever felt like you get paid to learn? In my experience at Educate!, I certainly do, and I absolutely love it 😍 . Reflecting on my 1.5 years at E! as a designer, I’ve been introduced to numerous tools, particularly as our product scales with the #Education #System #Solution (#ESS) through single subject (Entrepreneurship) reform in upper secondary schools in Rwanda. A few months after joining E!, I became part of the Designer Hub, a team of over 10 talented designers (🇷🇼, 🇺🇬, & 🇰🇪) led by our #Principal #Product #Strategist, Marit Blaak, PhD 🙏 who has unique ability to foster productive discussions and thoughtful processing with great ease, structures, and 🔧 tools. We meet monthly to share updates on different products, learn important design topics and competencies, align on E!'s design principles and processes, share best practices, etc. We also stay connected via a WhatsApp group to exchange valuable resources and updates. #Some #key #learnings #so #far #include: ▶ ▶ Culture of Experimentation and Iterative Design: Instead of isolated experiments and designs, we aspire to embed a culture that values and practices continuous refinement, ensuring our solutions evolve based on real-world feedback from our youth, teachers, and trainers. ▶ ▶ User Personas and Journey Mapping:  These help us understand and design user-centered experiences by defining user profiles and their interactions with our product. ▶ ▶ Design Principles (more on these in my future posts), problem framing, cultivating creativity in design, UX/LX Strategy, etc. ▶ ▶ And here is our favorite quote: "Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works." If you have a wonderful team like mine, consider yourself lucky and make sure to tell them directly. yeah, speak up and break the norm of staying quiet when you see the good in others. It won't diminish the goodness within you; in fact, it might just enhance it. Shout-outs to my team 🎉 🎉 _Anthony muzito, Frank Omona, Molly Gatobu, ANN KABENGI, Edith Mukyala, Fabiola Kabera, Kusiimwa Francis, ... and indeed, having a great manager like Sarah O. 👏 is also a true blessing. She provides specific and timely feedback without waiting for formal evaluations, asks challenging questions, and listens actively without judgements --creating the #psychological #safety needed to do my work. Most importantly, she’s taught me to always #question and #validate my #assumptions —crucial skills for designers (oh yeah, for leaders too!). This resonates well with Steve Blank's quote "No facts exist inside the buildings, only opinions". #LearningDesign #UserJourneyMapping #TeamAppreciation #UX #CreativeProcess #Leadership #AlwaysLearning #constantImprovement

🌟 "Change rarely happens in leaps and bounds but rather in small steps through iteration and improvement, all toward the goal of achieving transformative impact." - Phillip Okull, Director of Impact Evaluation, Educate! 🌟 We believe in the power of continuous learning and agile decision-making to drive significant outcomes for youth. Our Rapid Impact Assessment system allows us to quickly identify challenges, pivot, and adapt to maximize impact. By embedding pre-post evaluations and A/B tests within our delivery models, we ensure every experience we deliver creates an impact for young people.  For example, which curriculum, A or B, is most effective for driving impact on select indicators for girls? ✨Want to learn more about our innovative approach and impact? Uganda boasts of a vibrant young population, however over 19% of these are Out-of-school #youths with the majority being female (according to FAO 13/14). Most of these youth have no access to dignified work and/or are not involved in any kind of work. Educate! offers life and business planning skills to this category of Youth to enable them start/improve their businesses. On the 31st of May 2024, over 1,500 Youth across 3 districts of Kamuli, Mayuge and Iganga (Eastern Uganda) graduated from the Educate! Business Academy (E!BA). Should you carry the goat or not in the event of flooding in your village? Find out how this important question came up in Diana Mwai and Sarah O.'s presentation at the Education World Forum. 🐐 🌍

Exciting highlights from the Education World Forum! 🌍 I had the privilege of attending with Diana Mwai, where we led an engaging practical exercise that brought the Educate! program to life for conference participants. We transformed attendees into Educate! Scholars, immersing them in a scenario set in a remote village in Kenya facing severe flooding. The task? Select five essential items from a list of ten to ensure survival during evacuation. I was excited to see participants experience firsthand how Educate! works to build essential skills through hands-on activities, highlighting the power of collective problem solving and the importance of agency in addressing global challenges like climate change. The lively debates — especially about whether the goat should be included — continued into the evening dinner! We also had the opportunity to connect with Luis Benveniste from the World Bank, Michael Musyoki from FCDO, Kenya and Richard King from EDT - all doing inspiring work in global education. Thank you to everyone who participated and to Gavin Dykes and the forum organizers for this incredible opportunity! #EducationWorldForum #ExperientialLearning #GlobalEducation

📣 🌍 New Article! 👉🏾 bit.ly/44NHh0L “A narrower but multi-level approach to change can be more effective than efforts that try to do it all… Simplifying what you want to achieve and fostering an environment of continuous learning gives us a real chance to create the sustainable systems change we all aspire to." Writing for Stanford Social Innovation Review, Boris Bulayev, Kamanda Kamiri, and Rogers Patrick Kamugisha share three key lessons from our collaboration with the Rwandan government. Their insights will be useful for policymakers and governments aiming for transformative systems change and to better prepare students for the world of work. #SystemsChange #TransformingEducation #Africa #Rwanda

Educational reforms often end with curriculum change, but by also focusing on teacher training and processes that encourage sustained impact, policy makers and organizations can achieve wider systems change >> https://lnkd.in/epqewuiy Kamanda Kamiri, Rogers Patrick Kamugisha, and Boris Bulayev of the youth employment and skill-building organization Educate! share insights from their experience taking a targeted approach to workforce readiness in Rwandan secondary schools. The team collaborated with the work-readiness training group, Akazi Kanoze Access, to support the Rwanda Basic Education Board in efforts to better align classroom learning with life after graduation. Communications Specialist - East Africa at Educate!

This week was special. I visited a few of Educate!’s livelihood bootcamp alumni in Uganda and saw how far they have come since. Hanifa greeted me with a big warm hug - her smile radiating joy and excitement. 😊 She eagerly began sharing how she has grown and is now thriving in agriculture. After leaving school early due to family issues and marrying young, Hanifa was a stay-at-home mother, growing food for her family. Following the bootcamp she started selling her farm produce including tomatoes, yams and sugar cane at the local market. With her profits and her husband's support, she has managed to buy a small plot of land to expand her agribusinesses. Today, she's flourishing in agriculture with dreams of expansion and starting a car wash business. 🌱 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐚 𝐬𝐚𝐲𝐬, “𝐔𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠. 𝐋𝐨𝐰-𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝, 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝐛𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩. 𝐖𝐞 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐬𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠.” Like Hanifa, Olivia is also proving that challenges can be overcome. After leaving school due to pregnancy, she was struggling as a single mother. Today, because of applying the business knowledge from the bootcamp, her situation has changed. With her dad’s support, she has started a small community shop and clothing business. She dreams of expanding her clothing business into a large boutique, matching the standards of those in Kampala. 👗 “𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐩 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐲 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧. 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐧𝐨 𝐡𝐮𝐬𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐈 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐚𝐲 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐲 𝐬𝐨𝐧. 𝐈 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐦𝐲 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐨 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥,” 𝐬𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐎𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐚. It's imperative to provide them with quality learning and skill-building opportunities because like Hanifa says, young people have the power and potential to change their own lives and also uplift their communities. 🌍💯 #EducationForAll #WomenInBusiness #Inspiration #YouthEmpowerment #SuccessStories
