Preparing youth in Africa with the skills to succeed in today’s economy

About us

Africa has the world’s youngest and fastest-growing population. By 2035, the continent is poised to contribute more people to the global workforce each year than the rest of the world combined. At Educate! we're obsessed with impact. We leverage iterative learning to build highly scalable youth employment solutions aimed at unlocking the potential of the world’s youngest continent. Educate! prepares youth in Africa to learn, earn and thrive in today’s economy by: 1) introducing an employment-focused school subject into secondary, and 2) delivering livelihood bootcamps for out-of-school youth, with a focus on marginalized rural girls and young women. Our work has been validated by several independent evaluations, which found positive outcomes on income, employment, gender equity, family planning and sexual and reproductive health, educational attainment, and climate change resilience. To date, more than 380,000 youth have been meaningfully impacted across Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya, and along the way, Educate! has become the largest youth employment and skills provider in East Africa.

“There’s a need to synchronize efforts and to work with the government, and make sure we have buy-in from the government because then that informs the sustainability of a lot of work.” Educate!’s Sylvie Kinabo sharing reflections on co-creation with government and implementing a competency-based curriculum at the first ever East African Community Regional Education Conference. 📽️Watch ✨👇🏾

Exciting highlights from the EAC Regional Education Conference! 🌍 Such a privilege to participate in the East African Community Regional Education Conference and celebrate the AU Year of Education. The theme, "Educate an African Fit for the 21st Century," brought together a dynamic community of leaders committed to transforming education in Eastern Africa. With over 400 stakeholders in attendance, the conference was a powerhouse of knowledge sharing and networking. There were certainly a lot of takeaways, to highlight the top 3 that stood out for me: 1️⃣ The importance of parental engagement, sensitization in CBC implementation, and the need for a coordinated approach among stakeholders. 2️⃣ The importance of empowering teachers with the right skills and knowledge for an effective CBC implementation. 3️⃣ The need for very close collaboration, and having the buy-in from the governments, an aspect that was significantly highlighted throughout the conference. Digital literacy emerged as a cornerstone for preparing our youth for the future. By investing in education and fostering collaboration, we can create a brighter Africa. Great connecting with Rebekka Flam from Results for Development, Titus Kazungu, Ursula Hankinson from Global Schools Foundation, STIR Education and many others. A massive thank you to the organizing committee for an amazing event. A special thank you to the conference's communications team for inviting me to reflect and capture my thoughts on the conference during the 3rd day. I left inspired and remain committed to driving change through my day-to-day work. Excited to continue working and building a better future for our African youth! 🌍 #Educate! #youthdevelopment

🌍 Why is cultivating a ‘Yes I Can’ mentality the first lesson in our bootcamps for out-of-school youth? "Most of our youth have lost hope and are often labeled by society as failures, but we don't see them as failures. We believe each of them has the ability to make a positive impact in their communities and in their own lives" – Educate! Training Officer FRANCIS KIBIRIGE, speaking passionately at the recent EdHeroes Global Forum. 📈 In the very first week, we challenge youth with a unique trading task: start with a pencil and use negotiation skills to trade it for something more valuable. The results? Sometimes they come back with a sack of maize; on one occasion, a participant even returned with a hen! 🔗 This exercise not only boosts their confidence but also underscores the value of perseverance and soft skills. Francis, along with Dorothy Namubiru and Anthony muzito, emphasized the importance of understanding the backgrounds of out-of-school youth. This insight forms the cornerstone of our tailored approach to meeting their needs. 🎥 Read our blog and watch the full EdHeroes panel here: https://lnkd.in/eDmEjuWK #Educate #YouthEmpowerment #EdHeroes2024 #EducationForAll #SocialImpact

💫𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐚𝐲 👧🏾 Around 65% of the young people in our livelihood bootcamps for out-of-school youth are women. Many like Faith, 22, from Kitui, Kenya, featured on the cover of our recent Impact Report, are single mothers. Our bootcamps support youth to build skills and gain practical business experience. We measure impact through “Milestone Actions”: 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐧: Generate income 💵 𝐒𝐚𝐯𝐞: Build financial security 🏚️ 𝐀𝐜𝐭: Own a business 🌿 Faith embodies these principles. She’s using income from her tree nursery to diversify into other enterprises, support her daughter and siblings and help her mother with household bills. She shared: “My tree nursery business depends on the rainy season to make good sales. So I’m saving to start a second business, a kiosk selling food and fruits. With this I’ll be able to earn additional money and create work for someone else.” 𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒏 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒐𝒖𝒓 2023 𝑰𝒎𝒑𝒂𝒄𝒕 𝑹𝒆𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕 ▶️ https://lnkd.in/eziAxzYC

In your org/company, have you ever felt like you get paid to learn? In my experience at Educate!, I certainly do, and I absolutely love it 😍 . Reflecting on my 1.5 years at E! as a designer, I’ve been introduced to numerous tools, particularly as our product scales with the #Education #System #Solution (#ESS) through single subject (Entrepreneurship) reform in upper secondary schools in Rwanda. A few months after joining E!, I became part of the Designer Hub, a team of over 10 talented designers (🇷🇼, 🇺🇬, & 🇰🇪) led by our #Principal #Product #Strategist, Marit Blaak, PhD 🙏 who has unique ability to foster productive discussions and thoughtful processing with great ease, structures, and 🔧 tools. We meet monthly to share updates on different products, learn important design topics and competencies, align on E!'s design principles and processes, share best practices, etc. We also stay connected via a WhatsApp group to exchange valuable resources and updates. #Some #key #learnings #so #far #include: ▶ ▶ Culture of Experimentation and Iterative Design: Instead of isolated experiments and designs, we aspire to embed a culture that values and practices continuous refinement, ensuring our solutions evolve based on real-world feedback from our youth, teachers, and trainers. ▶ ▶ User Personas and Journey Mapping:  These help us understand and design user-centered experiences by defining user profiles and their interactions with our product. ▶ ▶ Design Principles (more on these in my future posts), problem framing, cultivating creativity in design, UX/LX Strategy, etc. ▶ ▶ And here is our favorite quote: "Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works." If you have a wonderful team like mine, consider yourself lucky and make sure to tell them directly. yeah, speak up and break the norm of staying quiet when you see the good in others. It won't diminish the goodness within you; in fact, it might just enhance it. Shout-outs to my team 🎉 🎉 _Anthony muzito, Frank Omona, Molly Gatobu, ANN KABENGI, Edith Mukyala, Fabiola Kabera, Kusiimwa Francis, ... and indeed, having a great manager like Sarah O. 👏 is also a true blessing. She provides specific and timely feedback without waiting for formal evaluations, asks challenging questions, and listens actively without judgements --creating the #psychological #safety needed to do my work. Most importantly, she’s taught me to always #question and #validate my #assumptions —crucial skills for designers (oh yeah, for leaders too!). This resonates well with Steve Blank's quote "No facts exist inside the buildings, only opinions". #LearningDesign #UserJourneyMapping #TeamAppreciation #UX #CreativeProcess #Leadership #AlwaysLearning #constantImprovement

🌟 "Change rarely happens in leaps and bounds but rather in small steps through iteration and improvement, all toward the goal of achieving transformative impact." - Phillip Okull, Director of Impact Evaluation, Educate! 🌟 We believe in the power of continuous learning and agile decision-making to drive significant outcomes for youth. Our Rapid Impact Assessment system allows us to quickly identify challenges, pivot, and adapt to maximize impact. By embedding pre-post evaluations and A/B tests within our delivery models, we ensure every experience we deliver creates an impact for young people.  For example, which curriculum, A or B, is most effective for driving impact on select indicators for girls? ✨Want to learn more about our innovative approach and impact?
