A multiproxy approach involving grain size, geophysical (resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, an... more A multiproxy approach involving grain size, geophysical (resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and P-wave velocity), mineralogical (XRD), and geochemical (elemental, stable isotopes) data has been applied to core SP9 (128 cm long) to reconstruct natural and anthropogenic changes since ≈1850 AD (anno domine) (dating by 210Pb and 127Cs methods) in a distal region of Sepetiba Bay (SB), Rio de Janeiro State (SE Brazil). The analyzed core is a fine-grained sedimentary sequence (except its upper 20 cm). It comprises detrital particles derived from felsic and intermediate source rocks, as suggested by the fields defined by the biplot Zr vs TiO2 and the Al2O3/TiO2 ratios. Despite the increase in particle size at the top of the core, there was a progressive increase in the organic matter and potentially toxic elements (PTEs) contents and nutrients such as N and P. Abstract The application of stable isotopes in stratigraphic studies is here demonstrated with se... more Abstract The application of stable isotopes in stratigraphic studies is here demonstrated with selected sedimentary Brazilian sections from the Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic. In those different age-case we present the application of δ13Corg and carb, δ15Ntotal and δ18Ocarb stable isotopes showing how past global events and environmental conditions variation can imprint characteristic isotopic signatures in sedimentary rocks profiles and how they can be useful in stratigraphic studies. Also, key points for the interpretation of stable isotope data derived from sedimentary organic matter and carbonates are discussed demonstrating how bulk-rocks analyses can be really useful for stratigraphic correlations and paleoenvironmental interpretations when a high-resolution interpretation is conducted.

We discuss in more detail the oil shale of the Tremembe Formation, in light of new geochemical da... more We discuss in more detail the oil shale of the Tremembe Formation, in light of new geochemical data obtained from boreholes drilled in the depocenter of Taubate Basin. The focus of this research was the interval (ca. 50 m thick) of higher concentration of organic matter of the drilled unit. TOC, total S, major, minor and trace elements, and Rock-Eval pyrolysis analyses were carried out. Based on these data, a high-resolution chemostratigraphic analysis was performed, making possible the recognition of ten chemostratigraphic units, which were correlated in the two studied wells. In addition, the application of chemostratigraphy to sequence stratigraphic analysis also proved to be a very effective tool (four 5th order sequences were identified). Based on TOC and Rock-Eval data, two intervals were selected for economic exploitation and industrial processing.

The Itaborai Basin located in the city of Itaborai and has been center of a lot attention due to ... more The Itaborai Basin located in the city of Itaborai and has been center of a lot attention due to the presence of continental carbonates deposition,in form of travertines. These rocks has been recognized as a possible analogues to the pre-salt reservoir rocks or at least, similar in it depositional processes. The Itaborai travertines presents some diagenetic influence related to the presence of silica rich fluids, similar to the pre-salt carbonates. The present research scope is to produce a petrographic analysis regarding the silica-rich travertine facies, as well recognize the textures and structures.
