They have gone to work or live in rather diverse places, most notably Pakistan, the UK, Australia, the US, Canada, and the Gulf states of the Middle East. Most among them have tried to maintain some degree of Hyderabadi identity. They retain connections to their homeland, build networks across national boundaries, and try to teach their children about Hyderabadi culture. They and their children have also become participants to varying degrees in the national life of the nation- states to which they have migrated. The specific environments in the destination countries, particularly the legal and political conditions governing migration, working conditions, and citizenship, provide both constraints and opportunities for the immigrants as they selectively shape new identit...

Most research on the Punjabi immigrants has focused on their public life. It is clear that these pioneers in the American West contended with racial, religious, and ethnic prejudices all their lives in the U.S. They battled for citizenship and lost; losing that, they fell prey to the Alien Land Laws of California and Arizona and could con...

I have argued elsewhere 1 (Leonard 2004) that, reviewing the history and contemporary scene for Muslims in the US with respect to three key areas, constructions of race, religion, and the nation, these three groups have had experiences more similar than different, and experiences that engage them all deeply in processes of religious and political change in America. But in this panel, I am clearly expected to focus on South Asians (Muslims from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh). 2 Let me delineate, then, the special characteristics brought by South Asian Muslims to the American Muslim community and the contributions they are making to both that community and the US.
