In the thirteenth century, mendicant orders introduced new ways of religious life that engaged the laity through preaching and conversion. Moreover, they founded new movements for religious women dedicated to prayer and contemplation, such as the Dominican nuns and the Poor Clares. In their churches, both friars and nuns were separated from the laity, either in choir precincts situated behind architectural screens, or in upper galleries raised above ground level. Before the widespread removal of these furnishings, therefore, medieval and early modern mendicant church interiors did not resemble the unified spaces we encounter today.
This volume presents a series of European case studies which use textual and material evidence to reconstruct and analyze the internal divisions of churches between the thirteenth and the sixteenth century. Thus, the authors provide a broad understanding of the variety, function, and meaning of the internal divisions that once conditioned the spiritual experience, function and meaning of sacred space for the laity as well as for the religious community.

Despite ecclesiastical authorities insistence on enclosure, were nuns truly isolated? How did nuns in observant convents administer their possessions outside the enclosure without leaving it? Which women can really be considered as “Dominican”? Those who were officially linked with the Order or those who perceived themselves as Dominican? Has Fountevraud’s identity as the order in which women lead and men serve medieval origins? Which evidence do we have of transatlantic ties before the arrival of the first European nuns in New Spain in 1620? How could Afro-Latin American women embody saintly virtues? These are some of the questions asked by the essays gathered here.
This book conducts a long-term inquiry regarding the differences and similarities, the continuities and discontinuities in various aspects of the active role of women in monastic and religious life during a long chronological framework (c. 1200-1700). Such a transhistorical approach highlights the continuities between the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period. Traditional periodization with a strict division between the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period has not only made it difficult to understand these continuities, but has also led to the attribution of early modern features to the earlier period, as happened with Fontevraud’s identity (Müller). This volume also explores the transregionality and the fluidity of transatlantic exchange of models between Europe and America, and the continuities and connections between several geographical areas. Finally, the interdisciplinary dialogue established between scholars from different backgrounds allows a more comprehensive approach to seeing religious women organizing their life inside their communities and their relationship with the world.
The main issues of this book are two: the transatlantic paradigm in the study of religious women; and the fluidity or permeability of enclosure and the relationship between these monasteries and the social milieu of their era. In both cases, spatial considerations are a significant element of the analysis, and the common thread of the different studies here presented.
This volume is an invitation to continue dialogue among international scholars from both sides of the Atlantic, to open new horizons, and to raise new research questions that will inspire future scholarship.

In 1218, Saint Dominic founded in Madrid the second female monastery (after Prouilhe) of the Orde... more In 1218, Saint Dominic founded in Madrid the second female monastery (after Prouilhe) of the Order of Preachers, and the first in the Iberian Peninsula. Coinciding with the 800th anniversary of the founder's death in 1221, this long overdue monograph, the first dedicated to the study of Dominican female monasteries in the “Province of Spain”, is finally being published by Trea. Just as the Dominicans had, from the beginning, placed the divine office at the center of the nuns’ religious life, this book uses liturgy as a prism through which to study female monasteries. It has therefore been embedded in the “liturgical turn” which, far from being simply a trend, is shown here as absolutely necessary to go beyond the existing methodological horizons in the study of Dominican female foundations in Castile. This approach was adopted not only for a typological and functional analysis of the physical monastic spaces (mainly in chapter IV), images and artefacts (chapter III), but also for an in-depth study of the social, legislative and institutional history of these foundations (chapter I), and of their cultural, devotional and liturgical contexts (chapters II-III). As a result, this perspective touches on several disciplines: art history, musicology and studies on liturgy, gender studies, literary studies, institutional history of religious orders, cultural history, anthropology, etc.
Despite great efforts to encourage centralization and uniformity in the Order of Preachers from the mid-13th century onwards, this goal remained a utopian dream. Idiosyncrasies in matters of legislation, jurisdiction, enclosure, liturgy, and, of course, architecture, endured largely as a result of the local religious contexts. As the Master General Humbert of Romans (1254-1263) pointed out, the Dominicans had buildings and churches of various types and layouts. In female monasteries diversity was defined by the enclosure, where observance varied from place to place, as well as by the importance of lay patronage and how the nuns’ collective identity was shaped. All these factors had material consequences in the buildings, determining different articulations and functions of the liturgical space, as for instance, the wide range of locations of the nuns’ choirs. A selection of the most significant plans and illustrations at the end of this volume aims to provide a better understanding of the theoretical discourse.
This book is an important contribution to what is still a largely unexplored area of research on sacred topography and spatial functionality in female monasteries in the Iberian Peninsula. It caters to an increasing interest in female and religious networks, as well as the evolution of women’s role in various artistic and cultural processes. Lastly, the comparative approach guiding this work goes beyond the 21 monasteries analyzed, placing Castilian Dominican nuns within the broader contexts of both the Order of Preachers, and European female monasticism.

De la même manière que les dominicains placèrent l'office divin au centre de la vie religieuse des moniales, ce livre prend la liturgie comme prisme à travers lequel sont étudiés les monastères féminins. Les particularités locales perdurèrent dans de nombreux domaines tels que la législation, la juridiction, la clôture, la liturgie et, bien sûr, l'architecture, largement déterminées par les contextes religieux locaux. Par conséquent, comme l'admit le maître général Humbert de Romans (1254-1263), leurs maisons avaient des bâtiments et des églises de divers types et dispositions. Dans les monastères de moniales la diversité fut définie par la clôture, dont l'observance variait d'un endroit à l'autre, par l'importance du patronage exercé sur les monastères et de la formation de l'identité collective des moniales.
Tous ces facteurs eurent des conséquences matérielles sur les bâtiments, déterminant différentes articulations de l'espace liturgique, comme par exemple la variété des solutions dans l'emplacement du chœur des moniales. L’inclusion d’une sélection des plans et illustrations les plus significatifs à la fin du volumen vise à faciliter la compréhension du discours théorique.
Ce livre vient donc contribuer aux études encore rares sur la topographie sacrée et la fonctionnalité spatiale dans les monastères féminins de la péninsule ibérique et répond à l’intérêt croissant pour les réseaux féminins et religieux et pour la réévaluation du rôle des femmes dans divers processus artistiques et culturels. Pour conclure, l'approche comparative guidant ce travail est allée au-delà des 21 monastères analysés, plaçant les moniales dominicaines castillanes dans les contextes plus larges de l'Ordre des Prêcheurs et du monachisme féminin européen.

Women’s networks – their relations with other women, men, objects and place – were a source of po... more Women’s networks – their relations with other women, men, objects and place – were a source of power in various European and neighbouring regions throughout the Middle Ages. This interdisciplinary volume considers how women’s networks, and particularly women’s direct and indirect relationships to other women, constituted and shaped power from roughly 300 to 1700 AD. The essays in this collection juxtapose scholarship from the fields of archaeology, art history, literature, history and religious studies, drawing on a wide variety of source types. Their aim is to highlight not only the importance of networks in understanding medieval women’s power but also the different ways these networks are represented in medieval sources and can be approached today. This volume reveals how women’s networks were widespread and instrumental in shaping political, familial and spiritual legacies.

This article addresses the transmission context of a formerly unknown text on music theory, copie... more This article addresses the transmission context of a formerly unknown text on music theory, copied on the verso of the last folio of a gradual (Lisbon, BnP, L.C. 238), which was part of a set of choirbooks commissioned by Catarina d’Eça, abbess of Santa María de Lorvão (1471-1521). The article discusses this source within the broader context of the production and circulation of liturgical books, particularly among Cistercian nuns. It reviews some assumptions concerning women’s agency in creating and performing liturgy and the negotiation between nuns and priests over nearly every aspect of liturgical care. It shows how the role of both lay and religious women as mediators across and between religious orders and kingdoms or territories can no longer be overlooked. The last section examines the theoretical sources of this brief musical treatise to determine whether the author of the text drew on the tradition of the Bernardian reform, or on other kinds of musical sources from outside the Cistercian tradition. Both the sources and the use of the Castilian language shed light on the origins of the text’s author.

Abstract of the book:
New approaches to understanding religious women's involvement in monastic reform, demonstrating how women's experiences were more ambiguous and multi-layered than previously assumed.
Over the last two decades, scholarship has presented a more nuanced view of women's attitude to and agency in medieval monastic reform, challenging the idea that they were, by and large, unwilling to accept or were necessarily hostile towards reform initiatives. Rather, it has shown that they actively participated in debates about the ideas and structures that shaped their religious lives, whether rejecting, embracing, or adapting to calls for "reform" contingent on their circumstances. Nevertheless, fundamental questions regarding the gendered nature of religious reform are ripe for further examination.
This book brings together innovative research from a range of disciplines to re-evaluate and enlarge our knowledge of women's involvement in spiritual and institutional change in female monastic communities over the period c. 1000 - c. 1500. Contributors revise conventional narratives about women and monastic reform, and earlier assumptions of reform as negative or irrelevant for women. Drawing on a diverse array of visual, material and textual sources, it presents "snapshots" of reform from western Europe, stretching from Ireland to Iberia. Case-studies focussing on a number of different topics, from tenth-century female saints' lives to fifteenth-century liturgical books, from the tenth-century Leominster prayerbook to archaeological remains in Ireland, from embroideries and tapestries to the rebellious nuns of Sainte-Croix in Poitiers, offer a critical reappraisal of how monastic women (and their male associates) reflected, individually and collectively, on their spiritual ideals and institutional forms.

Se analizan los ejemplares conocidos hoy en día y se pone de manifiesto el papel que tuvieron las dominicas de estos territorios no sólo
en la disposición de las celebraciones en sus monasterios, sino también en la autoría y producción de libros litúrgicos. Esto se considera en el contexto más amplio del monacato femenino en España y Nueva España, y en el de la Orden de Predicadores, reivindicando el papel de los dominicos en la producción de obras litúrgicas en estos territorios. Además, se tienen en cuenta también otros libros, cuyo uso en la liturgia monástica no ha sido
considerado, así como otro tipo de fuentes. La finalidad no es sólo poner de manifiesto el papel de las mujeres en este ámbito, sino también señalar la necesidad del estudio de la liturgia monástica femenina por parte de los historiadores del arte.

Ce livre vient donc contribuer aux études encore rares sur la topographie sacrée et la fonctionnalité spatiale dans les monastères féminins de la péninsule ibérique et répond à l’intérêt croissant pour les réseaux féminins et religieux et pour la réévaluation du rôle des femmes dans divers processus artistiques et culturels. Pour conclure, l'approche comparative guidant ce travail est allée au-delà des 21 monastères analysés, plaçant les moniales dominicaines castillanes dans les contextes plus larges de l'Ordre des Prêcheurs et du monachisme féminin européen.

New approaches to understanding religious women's involvement in monastic reform, demonstrating how women's experiences were more ambiguous and multi-layered than previously assumed.
Over the last two decades, scholarship has presented a more nuanced view of women's attitude to and agency in medieval monastic reform, challenging the idea that they were, by and large, unwilling to accept or were necessarily hostile towards reform initiatives. Rather, it has shown that they actively participated in debates about the ideas and structures that shaped their religious lives, whether rejecting, embracing, or adapting to calls for "reform" contingent on their circumstances. Nevertheless, fundamental questions regarding the gendered nature of religious reform are ripe for further examination.
This book brings together innovative research from a range of disciplines to re-evaluate and enlarge our knowledge of women's involvement in spiritual and institutional change in female monastic communities over the period c. 1000 - c. 1500. Contributors revise conventional narratives about women and monastic reform, and earlier assumptions of reform as negative or irrelevant for women. Drawing on a diverse array of visual, material and textual sources, it presents "snapshots" of reform from western Europe, stretching from Ireland to Iberia. Case-studies focussing on a number of different topics, from tenth-century female saints' lives to fifteenth-century liturgical books, from the tenth-century Leominster prayerbook to archaeological remains in Ireland, from embroideries and tapestries to the rebellious nuns of Sainte-Croix in Poitiers, offer a critical reappraisal of how monastic women (and their male associates) reflected, individually and collectively, on their spiritual ideals and institutional forms.

Materiality and Religious Practice in Medieval Denmark stresses the significance of the sensory, dramatic enactment that moved the soul, body, heart and mind of the medieval faithful and proposes to revisit and pave the way ahead for research in religious material culture in medieval Denmark. From bread and wine to holy water, and from oils and incense to the relics of saints, the material objects of religion stood at the heart of medieval Christian practice, bridging the gap between the profane and the divine. While theoretical debates around the importance of physicality and materiality have animated scholarship in recent years, however, little attention has been paid to finding solid, empirical evidence upon which to base such discussions.

In the thirteenth century, mendicant orders introduced new ways of religious life that engaged the laity through preaching and conversion. Moreover, they founded new movements for religious women dedicated to prayer and contemplation, such as the Dominican nuns and the Poor Clares. In their churches, both friars and nuns were separated from the laity, either in choir precincts situated behind architectural screens, or in upper galleries raised above ground level. Before the widespread removal of these furnishings, therefore, medieval and early modern mendicant church interiors did not resemble the unified spaces we encounter today.
This volume presents a series of European case studies which use textual and material evidence to reconstruct and analyze the internal divisions of churches between the thirteenth and the sixteenth century. Thus, the authors provide a broad understanding of the variety, function, and meaning of the internal divisions that once conditioned the spiritual experience, function and meaning of sacred space for the laity as well as for the religious community.
This book conducts a long-term inquiry regarding the differences and similarities, the continuities and discontinuities in various aspects of the active role of women in monastic and religious life during a long chronological framework (c. 1200-1700). Such a transhistorical approach highlights the continuities between the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period. Traditional periodization with a strict division between the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period has not only made it difficult to understand these continuities, but has also led to the attribution of early modern features to the earlier period, as happened with Fontevraud’s identity (Müller). This volume also explores the transregionality and the fluidity of transatlantic exchange of models between Europe and America, and the continuities and connections between several geographical areas. Finally, the interdisciplinary dialogue established between scholars from different backgrounds allows a more comprehensive approach to seeing religious women organizing their life inside their communities and their relationship with the world.
The main issues of this book are two: the transatlantic paradigm in the study of religious women; and the fluidity or permeability of enclosure and the relationship between these monasteries and the social milieu of their era. In both cases, spatial considerations are a significant element of the analysis, and the common thread of the different studies here presented.
This volume is an invitation to continue dialogue among international scholars from both sides of the Atlantic, to open new horizons, and to raise new research questions that will inspire future scholarship.

Despite great efforts to encourage centralization and uniformity in the Order of Preachers from the mid-13th century onwards, this goal remained a utopian dream. Idiosyncrasies in matters of legislation, jurisdiction, enclosure, liturgy, and, of course, architecture, endured largely as a result of the local religious contexts. As the Master General Humbert of Romans (1254-1263) pointed out, the Dominicans had buildings and churches of various types and layouts. In female monasteries diversity was defined by the enclosure, where observance varied from place to place, as well as by the importance of lay patronage and how the nuns’ collective identity was shaped. All these factors had material consequences in the buildings, determining different articulations and functions of the liturgical space, as for instance, the wide range of locations of the nuns’ choirs. A selection of the most significant plans and illustrations at the end of this volume aims to provide a better understanding of the theoretical discourse.
This book is an important contribution to what is still a largely unexplored area of research on sacred topography and spatial functionality in female monasteries in the Iberian Peninsula. It caters to an increasing interest in female and religious networks, as well as the evolution of women’s role in various artistic and cultural processes. Lastly, the comparative approach guiding this work goes beyond the 21 monasteries analyzed, placing Castilian Dominican nuns within the broader contexts of both the Order of Preachers, and European female monasticism.

En 1218, Saint-Dominique a fondé à Madrid le deuxième monastère féminin, après Prouilhe, lié à l'Ordre des Prêcheurs, et le premier de la péninsule ibérique. Coïncidant avec le 800e anniversaire de la mort du fondateur, survenue en 1221, cette attendue monographie, la première consacrée à l'étude des monastères féminins dans la «province d’Espagne» de l’ordre dominicain, est enfin publiée par Trea. De la même manière que les dominicains placèrent l'office divin au centre de la vie religieuse des moniales, ce livre prend la liturgie comme prisme à travers lequel sont étudiés les monastères féminins. L’ouvrage s'inscrit donc dans le liturgical turn qui, loin d'être une tendance, se présente ici comme une approche absolument nécessaire pour dépasser les horizons méthodologiques existants dans l'étude des monastères de moniales dominicaines en Castille. Cette méthode a été adoptée non seulement pour réaliser une analyse typologique et fonctionnelle des espaces monastiques (chapitre IV) et des images et des artefacts (chapitre III), mais aussi pour étudier l'histoire sociale, législative et institutionnelle de ces fondations (chapitre I) et de leurs contextes culturel, dévotionnel et liturgique (chapitres II-III). Ainsi, plusieurs disciplines s’entrecroisent au fil des pages : histoire de l'art, musicologie et études sur la liturgie, études de genre, études littéraires, histoire institutionnelle des ordres religieux, histoire culturelle, anthropologie.
La centralisation et l'uniformité auquel aspirait l’ordre dominicain depuis le milieu du XIIIe siècle constituaient un objectif ambitieux et, malgré les grands efforts déployés, l’uniformitas allait rester une utopie. Les particularités locales perdurèrent dans de nombreux domaines tels que la législation, la juridiction, la clôture, la liturgie et, bien sûr, l'architecture, largement déterminées par les contextes religieux locaux. Par conséquent, comme l'admit le maître général Humbert de Romans (1254-1263), leurs maisons avaient des bâtiments et des églises de divers types et dispositions. Dans les monastères de moniales la diversité fut définie par la clôture, dont l'observance variait d'un endroit à l'autre, par l'importance du patronage exercé sur les monastères et de la formation de l'identité collective des moniales.

researched and it remains almost unknown. As a consequence, the study of art and architecture in relation to liturgy has made
little impact in the historiography of women´s monasticism in this area. In this article we discuss the issues of the application of this
methodology in the research of the Dominican nunneries of the Province of Spain, stressing the necessity of adopting an integrating
approach, which takes into account the rare liturgical books surviving, together with other documentary sources and also the
buildings themselves. Then, following this methodology, we try to reconstruct the performance of the complex liturgy of Compline
and the use of monastic spaces with this purpose within these nunneries. Finally, we also discuss the spaces for doing penance and
the likely influence of some ultra-rigorist movements both on those practices and on the construction of these buildings.

Esta tesis tuvo como primer objetivo rescatar los monasterios femeninos de la Orden de Predicadores de la llamada "Provincia de España" del olvido y minusvaloración que habían sufrido por parte de los historiadores e historiadores del arte hasta la fecha. Dada la ausencia de estudios previos de reconocido rigor científico sobre muchas de estas instituciones, una primera fase del trabajo consistió en un detallado estudio monográfico de los veintiún monasterios y fundaciones de terciarias comprendidos. En ellos no se desdeñaron metodologías tradicionales de la historia del arte, abordándose el análisis estilístico- donde fuese posible- y estableciendo cronologías constructivas, así como su relación con el contexto socio-político en el que surgieron, las relaciones de patronazgo, etc. Estas monografías, correspondientes a cada uno de los veintiún monasterios estudiados, constituyen los extensos anexos de la tesis, subdivididos en tres volúmenes, e incluidos en un CD adjunto. Sin embargo, el segundo y principal objetivo, fue superar estos métodos tradicionales, adoptando una apertura metodológica, ausente hasta la fecha en el estudio de las dominicas medievales castellanas, que aportase una visión integradora, que nos acercase con mayor proximidad a la realidad de estas religiosas. Con tal propósito se tuvo en cuenta desde la estructura legislativa, jurisdiccional y económica de los monasterios, a la superestructura devocional, litúrgica, ritual y cultural, determinada por aquella, para reconstruir así, en última instancia, el contexto en el que se levantaron los edificios y se produjeron determinados objetos e imágenes y, a su vez, la función de estos y su repercusión en todo lo anterior. Esto implicó, en un primer momento, analizar, cuestionar y desmontar, muchos de los supuestos mantenidos por la historiografía tradicional y, lamentablemente, también actual, consecuencia de una lectura ingenua de los documentos oficiales y las crónicas de la Orden y de la ausencia de un enfoque feminista o de género en el estudio de las dominicas medievales castellanas. Este último estuvo también ausente hasta tiempos muy recientes- y no solo en la Península Ibérica- en el estudio de la liturgia de las monjas, atribuyéndoseles también aquí un papel de meros sujetos pasivos. Pese a la escasez de libros litúrgicos conservados, la mencionada apertura metodológica, ha permitido reconstruir algunos aspectos y peculiaridades del rito en estos monasterios, y del papel activo de las mujeres en su configuración, abordándose a partir de tal conocimiento el estudio de la funcionalidad espacial de sus edificios. Al "liturgical turn", metodología bien conocida en otros ámbitos, pero apenas explorada hasta el momento en el estudio del monacato femenino hispano, se sumó, por lo tanto, una visión de género, que permitió definir la personalidad e independencia de las monjas dominicas respecto a la Orden de Predicadores, pero también el carácter de sus relaciones con esta. En consecuencia, la tesis (dividida en dos volúmenes y con un apéndice impreso que incluye una selección de fotos y planos) consta de cuatro capítulos, estrechamente conectados entre ellos, y a través de los cuales se traza un análisis comparativo de los monasterios de dominicas castellanas La fundación, la adscripción a la Orden de Predicadores, la adopción de cierto corpus legal, la reforma y otras transformaciones y cambios- cuestiones que resultan aún poco estudiadas en los casos que nos ocupan-, son analizadas en el primer capítulo. En el segundo se cuestiona la existencia de una liturgia propia de las monjas dominicas, su desarrollo y peculiaridades- en estrecha relación con la funcionalidad de los espacios monásticos y con ciertos objetos de devoción-y las fuentes para su estudio. Las prácticas devocionales de las dominicas castellanas se abordan en el tercer capítulo, teniendo en cuenta textos, paraliturgias, música, teatro, así como determinadas pinturas, esculturas y otros objetos de devoción. Finalmente, el último capítulo está dedicado propiamente a la reconstrucción del uso funcional y el significado de los espacios monásticos, teniendo en cuenta todo lo referido en los capítulos previos y de acuerdo con el enfoque interdisciplinar anteriormente comentado. De todo ello resulta un panorama de las dominicas castellanas notablemente rico, heterogéneo y complejo, que supera la visión tradicional, a la vez que las sitúa en el contexto religioso de la Baja Edad Media en Europa

En consecuencia, la tesis (dividida en dos volúmenes y con un apéndice impreso que incluye una selección de fotos y planos) consta de cuatro capítulos, estrechamente conectados entre ellos, y a través de los cuales se traza un análisis comparativo de los monasterios de dominicas castellanas La fundación, la adscripción a la Orden de Predicadores, la adopción de cierto corpus legal, la reforma y otras transformaciones y cambios- cuestiones que resultan aún poco estudiadas en los casos que nos ocupan-, son analizadas en el primer capítulo. En el segundo se cuestiona la existencia de una liturgia propia de las monjas dominicas, su desarrollo y peculiaridades- en estrecha relación con la funcionalidad de los espacios monásticos y con ciertos objetos de devoción-y las fuentes para su estudio. Las prácticas devocionales de las dominicas castellanas se abordan en el tercer capítulo, teniendo en cuenta textos, paraliturgias, música, teatro, así como determinadas pinturas, esculturas y otros objetos de devoción. Finalmente, el último capítulo está dedicado propiamente a la reconstrucción del uso funcional y el significado de los espacios monásticos, teniendo en cuenta todo lo referido en los capítulos previos y de acuerdo con el enfoque interdisciplinar anteriormente comentado. De todo ello resulta un panorama de las dominicas castellanas notablemente rico, heterogéneo y complejo, que supera la visión tradicional, a la vez que las sitúa en el contexto religioso de la Baja Edad Media en Europa

My participation in this conference, and in that session in particular, was forced, in an attempt to "alleviate" or maybe conceal the damage caused by the repeated misuse of my research by the person with whom I shared the session. Description
These sessions focus on religious communities’ responses to crises in relation to monastic libraries and book collections. We aim to investigate what happened to medieval convent libraries and book collections in times of peril during the Middle Ages, but also the early modern period and up until our time.
Session I examine in what way religious communities and some specific religious leaders responded to crises by stimulating desire for knowledge preservation and systematization. Through the analysis of eight donation lists, Benjamin Bertrand examines the role of abbots or bishops in the Anglo-Norman world in the 11th and 12th centuries in reforming their libraries to respond to a changing cultural atmosphere. René Hernández explores the role of library catalogues as a form of securing the agency of readers within medieval book collections. This talk will compare the catalogues of the Franciscan libraries of Assisi (1381), Padua (1396, 1449) and the Libro de los epítomes of Hernando Colón (c. 1539). Finally, Giovanni Verri will discuss the literary works that may have been kept in the Augustinian canonry of Helgafel in Iceland, through an analysis of the church registers (máldagar) and other documents.
Session II discusses the acquisition, commission, production, and use of devotional, liturgical and theological books in response to the challenges and crises faced by religious communities. Some of the papers gathered adopt explicitly gendered approaches to crisis in religious communities and consider the continuities and disruptions in production of manuscripts, re-use, and function of books within these communities. Katie Bugyis analyses the motivation behind the acquisition and commission of liturgical, devotional and theological texts by Sibyl de Fenton, abbess of Barking abbey (r. 1393-1419) in times of political, economic, and religious turmoil. This paper considers Sybil’s need to respond to questions of her sacramental authority, particularly to address new and pressing questions about the sacrament of penance. Minela Fulurija Vučić will explore the production of manuscripts in vernacular for convents in Dubrovnik from the 14th to the 18th century, and the liturgical and devotional practices of these nuns through these sources. Finally, Katharine C. Chandler will analyse the creation, use, and afterlife of two precious liturgical sources (MS Lewis E 8 and Morgan MS M.115) part of a set of manuscript graduals copied for the Chartreuse de Champmol around 1470, as witness to the changing textual process of liturgical invention through the late Middle Ages and the early modern era.
Session III discusses how at certain times, crises' effects were incremental in book collections of various religious institutions, with the reception of texts that were adapted to new contexts. Phillis will discuss the circulation and copy of the Lamentum Lacrymabile (c. 1150-c. 1153), written in response to the Second Crusade, in relation to changing perceptions of crises in 12th century Flemish religious communities. Brianna Cano analyses the dissemination and use among New Spain nuns of the translation of the Legenda Maior of Catherine of Siena commissioned by Cisneros and the impact of this text on both the visual culture of the convent and the liturgical performance in these communities. Victoria Legkikk explores the circulation of liturgical traditions and the networks between monastic libraries of Rus, Bulgaria and Serbia. Finally, Zhang Fu discusses the publication and circulation of the Jingshan zang 徑山藏, a special version of the whole Buddhist canon, the Tripiṭaka, as a response to social crisis and religious eschatology.
Session IV explores how at certain times, these changes were detrimental, and the original context of collections was lost. Papers in this part look at a the Nachleben of medieval and early modern manuscripts, their dispersion and loss in times of peril, their re-assembly and their reinterpretation in their new locations.
Katrin Janz Wenig discusses the Zacharias Konrad of Uffenbach’s manuscript collection at the State Library in Hamburg, and the role of this important collector in saving important manuscripts and fragments from late medieval Rhenish monasteries. Anna Michlalchuck (National School of Charters) analyses how the manuscripts and the archives collected by the Maurists were able to «survive» the «difficult» times of the French revolution. Finally, Suzan Folkers studies the processes of safekeeping and exchange of the book collections from the houses of the Sisters of the common life at Deventer and the monastery of canonesses regular of Diepenveen, during the occupation of these towns by Spanish soldiers and the Dutch Revolt (c. 1560-1600). She will also look at how the sisters' books made it into the town's library.

The study of the architecture and the ornamentation of Mendicant convents has been deeply renewed during the last two decades. Art historians are progressively abandoning a mere technical and stylistic approach to the architecture and the decoration of churches and conventual buildings by focusing the reflection on functional, social and symbolic factors which conditioned their design. This new research tendency regards not only friars’ convents, but also, on the wave of the “gender studies”, nunneries linked to the Mendicant families.
The new questionings are concerned with function of spaces and decoration, in relation to liturgy, burying, and to social and even political activities convents and nunneries housed. They lead art historians to have an interdisciplinary dialogue with scholars from other fields (historians, liturgists, musicologists, archaeologists, anthropologists), and to exploit new kind of sources.

A partir de una mirada interdisciplinaria, nos proponemos generar un espacio de enriquecimiento profesional mediante la presentación de conferencias, avances de investigación y proyectos grupales en curso que articulan los enfoques de la historia del arte, la conservación-restauración y la química, entre otras áreas.

Written documents and book collections were used to address the economic, social, political, and cultural crises that affected religious communities. We aim to discuss how manuscripts and book collections were used to mitigate or reject the impact of external or internal crises, to create a narrative about these upheavals and to foster renewal.
We aim to establish a broader comparative and geographical approach opening new perspectives, provoking new questions, and reformulating questions widely debated in the historiography.
Suggested topics on book collections in times of crisis from any geographic area and encompassing a wide chronological framework may include, but are not limited to:
• Dismembering and dispersion of manuscripts in times of peril. How could these collections be interpreted anew? What happened to the identity of these collections in their new surroundings? How were these ‘orphan’ collections used by their, potentially, new owners? Was there re-assembly?
• The post-medieval life and Nachleben of book collections. Dispersion and loss as a result of wars, turmoil, and ecclesiastical suppression during the modern times.
• Assembling of manuscripts as a result of crisis. Medieval and early modern recycling history of manuscripts, and how these processes inform not only medieval book culture but also religious communities’ identities and religious and cultural networks more broadly.
• Assembling versus dismembering manuscripts as a result of crisis. Analysis of the factors that led to one or the other option. Did these occur at the same time in the same community?
• Crisis, continuities, and disruptions in production of manuscripts, re-use, and function of books within religious communities.
• Interplay between manuscript production and the making of other ornamenta sacra in times of crisis.
• The role of manuscripts and book collections in the creation of crisis narratives among religious communities. Who is to blame during crisis? Entangled scales and agents involved at micro and macro levels.
• Explicitly gendered approaches to crises in religious communities. In what way religious women, including nuns and mulieres religiosae, used manuscripts and book collections.
We welcome papers from a variety of disciplines including but not limited to history, art history, material culture, codicology, cultural history, musicology, history of liturgy, anthropology, literature, gender studies with a focus on religious communities from different orders/religions, different territories, and geographical regions exploring what happened to medieval book collections (c. 1000-c. 1600) during and beyond the Middle Ages. We invite speakers to explore the impact of crisis in book collections from religious communities and these communities’ management of their libraries in times of peril.
