    😯 𝐁𝐢𝐠 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞: Today Google launches a new Shopping Ad format I can imagine it raises a lot of questions about what this means. So I wrote an extensive blogpost, with everything you should know. These are the highlights: 👉 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐰? Comparison Shopping Services (CSSs) can now advertise their own product pages with shopping ads. Before they could only advertise on behalf of merchants. 👉 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞? For compliance with the European Digital Markets Act (DMA). Google already took measures to not preferentially rank its own CSS (Google Shopping) in 2018, by giving other CSSs the same advertising possibilities. The new ad format is an extra solution for CSSs that want to drive traffic to their own website, instead of only directly to merchants. (Comparison websites saw Google traffic to their website decrease over the last 10-15 years.) 👉 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 / 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬? I've talked with several big merchants about this, and they are not very happy with this development. They already experience fierce competition in the shopping ads auction and now they expect that to get worse - CSS’es (who are able to advertise the lowest prices) could potentially create a lot of extra competition in the auction. 👉 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬? Due to this extra competition in the auction, the impression volume of merchant campaigns might decrease, while the average CPC increases. The volume and cost of CPC/affiliate based comparison shopping channels might go up as well.    👉 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝? Background: Producthero is an independent CSS platform between the merchant and Google. Because advertisers and Google do not pursue mutual goals, we are embraced by more than 10.000 European merchants, because they consider us a valuable addition to: 1. Google’s support (what they tell you), 2. Google's ad platform (the control they give you) and 3. Google's insights (what they show you). Running our own managed Shopping campaigns would compete with the campaigns of our customers and it is important for us that our customers can trust us with their data, without any conflicts of interest. Therefore: 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘰 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘊𝘚𝘚 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘳𝘶𝘯 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧-𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘥 𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘴.
