JOB SUMMARY

 

Under the general direction of the Executive Director of Development at the Baskin School of Engineering, the Senior Director of Corporate Engagement is responsible for leading corporate revenue initiatives and establishing holistic, strategic partnerships with organizations to support the engineering school at UC Santa Cruz. The role will be integral in building investment in the school and the university among Silicon Valley and other national and international corporations by engaging support for Baskin Engineering's research programs, talent pipeline, professional education offerings and innovation pathways. The Senior Director will develop, implement and manage comprehensive strategies to successfully meet corporate revenue goals and objectives. Partnering with and supporting the dean, faculty, staff, community engagement and fundraising team, the Senior Director will identify and cultivate new corporate prospects, nurture existing relationships, and convey compelling engineering opportunities to secure corporate funding. The Senior Director will collaborate with faculty to develop and deliver proposals aligned with faculty members' research expertise and industry needs. In collaboration with and with support from the UCSC University Advancement Division and the Innovation and Business Engagement (IBE) Hub team, the successful candidate will contribute to ensuring that Baskin Engineering's reputation as a leader in modern engineering education and research is maintained and enhanced.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

 

Budgeted Salary: $143,050 - $170,100/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

 

60% - Corporate Revenue Development

 

  • Builds and maintains a portfolio of 20-30 companies to contribute major investment in Baskin Engineering research initiatives and programs. Responsible for $3M+ in annual fundraising from corporate partners within two years in the role.
  • Creates and executes effective strategies designed to maximize corporate support of division's research, programmatic and philanthropic priorities at the major gift level ($50,000) and higher
  • Collaborates with the division's senior leadership and faculty researchers to understand their research projects, goals, and funding needs. Cultivates faculty and administrative relationships across the division to identify appropriate research opportunities and partnerships. Partners with faculty to enhance marketability of research programs, engaging them in continuous dialogue about their research.
  • Demonstrates accountability for unit's performance by directing stewardship activities, providing regular updates and reports to corporate partners on the progress and outcomes of the sponsored research projects.
  • Builds strategic relationships with key university partners, including University Advancement (UA), the Innovation and Business Engagement (IBE) Hub, Office of Research (OR), UCSC Silicon Valley Extension (UNEX) and UCSC Career Center, collaborating on identification, cultivation and solicitation of potential partners that align with the school's mission and objectives.
  • Collaborates and consults with the IBE Hub in partnership negotiations and potential agreements with corporate partners to ensure compliance with university policies, corporate guidelines, and relevant regulations throughout the fundraising process.
  • Prepares compelling proposals, case statements, impact/stewardship reports and presentations to secure corporate funding, including research grants, gifts and sponsorships, and other partnerships.
  • Represents Baskin Engineering at events, conferences, and networking events to promote partnerships and corporate engagement opportunities.

 

20% - Corporate Strategy

 

  • Serves as primary liaison with strategically aligned industry partners to develop and leverage relationships that result in raising revenue for philanthropic and research support.
  • Develops and drives strategies and execution of the corporate engagement campaign, in coordination with the school's overall fundraising strategy. Seeks to establish holistic partnerships to benefit students, staff, faculty and the university, pursuing multiple connection points with corporate partners.
  • Enlists dean, chancellor and key faculty members to assist in solicitation and stewardship activities when appropriate.
  • Directs unit to ensure corporate revenue goals and strategic objectives are met. Secures funding for key school priorities and initiatives aligned with its commitment to inclusive excellence, including support for Baskin Engineering's faculty research programs, talent pathways, sponsorships for designated centers and programs.
  • Conducts outreach and networking activities to engage with corporate decision-makers, research and development teams, and philanthropic divisions. Develops and maintains a comprehensive understanding of the corporations' strategic goals, research interests, and corporate social responsibility initiatives, connecting those to university opportunities.
  • Serves as an expert resource for campus leadership, academic leaders, and development colleagues to consult on best practices related to corporate engagement, solicitation and sponsorship.
  • Monitors industry trends, corporate giving patterns, best practices in university corporate engagement, and emerging opportunities to inform engagement strategies and the school's programmatic offerings.
  • Consults with the Executive Director of Development to develop and implement partner strategies; works in close collaboration with UA, IBE Hub and OR to ensure a comprehensive, holistic approach to corporate engagement. Serves as liaison to Dean's Council.

 

10% - Administration and Management

 

  • Manages corporate development staff, ensuring employees are up-to-date in skills and best practices to effectively develop and implement strategic development plans.
  • Prepares an annual development plan that responds to division's priorities and market demands, and that includes measurable goals, specific strategies and metrics for expanding both levels and sources of support.
  • Maintains and manages unit systems to track activities and revenue projections. Oversees an accurate and up-to-date database of corporate contacts, interactions, and philanthropic history. Utilizes the university's customer relationship management (CRM) software to track and report on engagement activities and progress to revenue goals.
  • Ensures adherence to all legal and ethical standards, as well as timely and accurate reporting to donors and university leadership.
  • Provides input on budget needs and strategic planning for Baskin Engineering development department.
  • Stays abreast of University of California system and university policies, procedures, and guidance related to gifts, grants, and other related topics.
  • Participates in Baskin Engineering development team and school leadership meetings and events; contributes to regular UA meetings of major gifts fundraisers.
  • Identifies and pursues opportunities to foster an inclusive, collaborative workplace free from any form of harassment, intimidation, or unlawful discrimination.

 

10% - Supervision

 

  • Supervises staff within the BE Development Office.
  • Assesses staffing levels, identifies resource needs, writes job descriptions and oversees the hiring/selection process.
  • Provides guidance, training and professional development to the team, either formally or on-the-job, for staff to ensure subject matter knowledge in appropriate areas.
  • Responds to inquiries and resolves complex problems.
  • Leads through challenging situations and uses effective management skills, including mentoring and feedback.
  • Completes performance evaluations, merit reviews and recommendations, and takes disciplinary action when needed.
  • Conducts regular staff meetings.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Expert working knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.
  • Expert knowledge of all aspects of corporate engagement, including current issues of concern for both the School of Engineering, Silicon Valley, and the tech industry. Deep knowledge and experience with Silicon Valley companies relevant to Baskin Engineering research and programs.
  • Expert knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc.
  • Demonstrated and extensive success in corporate fundraising, business development, and/or corporate partnership management.
  • Expert verbal communication skills, including interpersonal and political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships with diverse colleagues throughout the organization and with outside constituencies. Expert strategic and communication skills in making persuasive and compelling presentations of goals and objectives for a location in order to secure gifts.
  • Expert written communication skills to develop high level strategic planning documents, reports, and presentations that effectively communicate needs and engage stakeholders regarding division initiatives and priorities.
  • Expert analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Expert project / program management skills, including skills in setting and meeting program / project goals and objectives within budget and time constraints.
  • Expert level skills in maintaining confidentiality.
  • Advanced knowledge of the engineering industry and trends.
  • Expertise in building complex partnership agreements, including knowledge of IP regulations, expectations and practices. Extensive experience with applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc.
  • Expert ability to engage with faculty to develop an understanding of their research work and funding needs, and to convey them to prospective partners. Direct experience in connecting academic research to industry clients and supporting their unique needs.
  • Proficiency in using fundraising software and CRM systems.
  • Expert knowledge of management/leadership concepts, principles and best practices.
