Grim weather has continued to batter the UK, with heavy rain and thunder expected throughout the day and a possibility the downpour could affect major events like Wimbledon and the British Grand Prix

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, meaning people should expect low-level impacts and disruption to travel, even some flooding, for certain parts of the country on Sunday.

It follows after an unseasonably chilly start to the weekend, with temperatures likely to hover around 15C in London and dropping to the low teens in other areas.

Forecaster Simon Partridge said yesterday: ‘We’ve had quite a few heavy showers across the country today, there was some pretty heavy rain in the east but that’s cleared and left us with showers.

‘There will be more, tomorrow is sunshine and showers across the whole of the UK, but not quite as windy as today.

‘There will probably be disruption to play across Wimbledon tomorrow, mainly in the afternoon. Wimbledon will mostly be dry in the morning, and the same with the Grand Prix.’

The wet weather indeed comes amid a raft of major events scheduled this weekend, which in addition to the tennis and the racing include the Henley Regatta and music concerts in Hyde Park.

Wimbledon fans have already had to endure persistent delays to matches due to inclement weather throughout the first week of the world-famous championship.

Many were nevertheless left stunned by Emma Raducanu’s performance on Friday, when she bested the weather to beat Greece’s Maria Sakkari, securing perhaps her best run ever at the tournament.

Elsewhere, temperatures have at other times dropped to almost freezing in some rural areas, with snow even reported at Glen Coe.

Nor does there yet appear to be any sign of respite in the coming days.

Showers will remain widespread through to Monday, and while things may brighten a little in the south toward Tuesday afternoon, the rain’s expected to set in again on Wednesday.
