It’s been the question on every fan’s mind since Sierra McClain‘s departure was confirmed this summer — how can 9-1-1: Lone Star possibly write out such an integral character in a way that won’t feel completely jarring? (Spoiler alert: It couldn’t.)
The procedural’s fifth and final season premiere on Monday revealed that Grace left home to volunteer with Mercy Ships, a faith-based organization that performs life-saving surgeries all over the world. (Before you Google, yes, it’s a real group.) As Judd explained, Mercy Ships gave a presentation at the Ryders’ church, and Grace was so moved by the plight of forgotten orphans that she decided to hop aboard.
“She knew it was inconvenient,” Judd said in his wife’s defense. “She knew that it was terrible timing. But she felt the touch of God. I can still see her face that day. Her eyes were shining with tears. Not just tears — this fire, too, you know? And I never loved her more than I did in that moment.”
Uh, yeah, “terrible timing” would be putting it mildly. Not only do Judd and Grace have a two-year-old daughter at home, one Judd is now left to raise alone, but Wyatt — Judd’s adult son from a previous relationship — was also recently paralyzed in a bicycling accident, making this an extremely busy time for their family overall.
Still, showrunner Rashad Raisani tells TVLine that he stands by Grace’s exit storyline, especially when faced with a less desirable alternative. (Killing Grace off was “quickly dismissed” as it “didn’t feel like it was the right thing to do by her.”) In speaking with Jim Parrack, who portrays Judd, Raisani says, “The only thing we could think of to justifiably pull Grace away from her family and job was an even greater calling. And the only thing in Grace’s world that could answer that was God.”
Raisani knows that not everyone is going to co-sign Grace’s polarizing decision. “People are allowed to feel the feelings they have about it,” he says, “but we did all we could do to protect her character. Without getting too churchy about it, the Bible is filled with stories about characters who follow a call from God at great inconvenience to — and frankly to the detriment of — the people they love the most.”
Raisani admits that McClain’s departure “rocked the boat” a bit, as at least four Season 5 scripts had already been written, but it also presented an exciting challenge. “I have often found that out of great crisis comes great opportunity,” he explains, adding that Judd’s storyline is more nuanced as a result of his wife’s absence.
“Judd doesn’t have his job, he doesn’t have his son and now he doesn’t have his wife, so it puts him into a deeper place of isolation,” Raisani says. “You’ll see as the season goes on that it creates this great complexity for Judd. On one hand, he admires and loves his wife, but there will be a growing sense of frustration and some uncomfortable feelings he has that he doesn’t want to admit to himself that start to come out.”
As for Wyatt, the original plan for Season 5 was for Judd’s son to become “a bit of an acolyte” to Grace in the call center, “but Sierra’s departure accelerated that,” Raisani explains, hence Wyatt already being fairly confident in his role as a dispatcher. But even though “he’s been taught by the best,” we’ll still see Wyatt “waffle — but never crumble — under pressure” a few times this season.
Elsewhere in 9-1-1: Lone Star‘s final season premiere, Owen found himself in the difficult position of having to choose between Paul and Marjan to replace Judd at the firehouse, while Carlos — now a Texas Ranger — struggled to earn the respect of his new partner Campbell (Parker Young), all the while still obsessing over his father’s recent murder.
OK, let’s talk: How do you feel about Grace’s exit storyline? Was she right to suddenly leave her family, or is Judd the most understanding man on the planet? And which other premiere developments have you feeling some type of way? Grade the episode below, then drop a comment with your full review.
Why are studios so afraid to recast?? I don’t see Grace leaving her child and Judd for such a long period of time. I just don’t.
Tvline should’ve added a poll with how satisfied with Grace’s exit story?
Why should they? That’s often more jarring then just having them leave.
Also, this is the final season for 9-1-1: Lone Star. Now, whether they knew that before finding out the actress wanted to leave or not is unknown, but if they did, thatales even more sense as to why they didn’t recast her.
There was RAMPANT speculation that this was the last season. If the TV media/fandom are openly talking about it, the BTS folks at the shows production knew more than everyone else did. She wanted to start her new job. IDK how that will work out for her long term, but I get the thinking.
I agree with you!
They can’t recast when it’s series final season
yeah I agree with Grace not leaving her family for an extended period, especially since Judd retired, it would have made more sense to me if they went as a family. A quick google tells me that mercy ships do accomodate families and children of volunteers. But I guess the show can’t do that or they lose the Judd character. (Though, it doesn’t seem like there is a plan for Judd yet?)
So Grace essentially “orphaned” her child to go take care of other orphaned children? What dumb to and lazy writing. Why add the orphaned children piece.
The actress bailed on the show, she left them with no loyalty over money, her contract. So instead of killing her off they made her seem like a greater calling took her away. Kudos to the writers , the way she just left the show throw 4 years of loyalty and paychecks out the window, I would of written a fiery death for her character.
I totally agree
It is a job. People have a right to leave jobs. I never understand why people feel like actors should not have the same ability to leave a job when they are unhappy or for a better opportunity. She was my favorite character, and it would not punish the actress (who again, just had a job), to kill her. It would just punish the audience.
That is true, but if you develop a reputation of bailing on an actor and actress job, chances are future employment may not be see easy. It would be a bit easier for a mega-star, but probably not for anyone that is cast on an ensemble television show.
“so” easy.
I guess you’ve never left a job for a better opportunity?
So she abandoned her family? Pretty much the worst thing anyone could do
Should have just killed her off. What mother leaves her child for…. how long? Please!
Exactly!
Then they could have had Judd get back together with the
mother of his son Wyatt…..
I see that as a strong possibity.
Definitely should have just hired someone else for the role instead of this atrocity. YIKES 🤦🏾♂️
Should have killed her off or had her at home, not seen. Abandoning her toddler daughter for unknown period of time is not something Grace would do. Even if Judd is there. Stupid way to explain.
Killing her off I was not for. Since this is the last season and it’s shortened I do believe that just keeping the grace character off screen would have been the best decision. Like he said they’re all sorts of things going on in that household that could have kept Grace offscreen. They still could have tackled the isolation issue by having Grace working lots of overtime because Judd is at home taking care of the baby. That kind of calling does sound like Grace. However I do agree with those that said it was just lazy writing. I think we all would have had a lot of fun just watching the different ways they could keep from having to show Grace while still making her a main character. She could have still mentored Wyatt at the call center. She could babysit for other characters. She could still minister to other characters. Removing her in this manner was just as abrupt that’s killing her off. You should have kept the spirit of grace even if you couldn’t keep Sierra
Write off the family. Move them. Judd gets another fire job. Grace gets a chance to work at a church or phage or something. And Charlie gets to be with her mom and dad. The 3 of them go. Wyatt is grown but that is not the spirit of grace to leave her beloved husband and child. Sorry Judd. You gotta go.
Not fair to the actor who plays Judd to lose his job
Yeah just keeping her off screen would have been so much better.
They shoud have replaced Grace with another actress to finish the series. Day time soaps used to do it all the time. Leaving her child behind to take care of orphans is a big No for me.
Don’t miss her
I had issues about leaving the child, but I was glad they didn’t take the easy way out and kill her off, especially since I’m sure they were hoping she would change her mind about coming back. Recasting her role would not have worked because the actors together were too beloved. The choice was not an easy one for the producers but I appreciate they did stay true to her character.
It is hilarious to me that they are acting as though their hands were tied. They could have paid her salary and she would have been available!!!
Yes!!! Thank you!
I don’t think producers have as much say over contract negotiations as you think they do.
For example, Mariska Hargitay is an executive producer on Law and Order: SVU and she couldn’t keep Kelli Giddish (Amanda Rollins) around, no matter how hard she fought.
Not necessarily. Her new job could have a contract ensuring her way more episodes than she would have gotten in a final season of 911. She still has a real life family to wirry about so I don’t understand how everyone is so understanding about her taking a new job over a job that’s currently ending. This is television not gas stations- you can’t just run out and get hired quickly for a new job in tv.
They could have… just paid her.
Wait.. is that why she isn’t in this season???
Yes, she asked for a raise when they were renegotiating her contract and the network wouldn’t give it to her.
I want Grace back, she is the show, without her the show is boring, especially her not on the 911 calls
🙄Grace wasn’t the show!
I am sorry but I am sure they could have found other ways that weren’t so effing OOC
OR
paid the actress her worth
It was an excellent season premiere episode. Love the addition of Parker Young as a long ranger. His character’s great chemistry with Carlos made me wish even more that this show got an additional season. Would love to see more stories surrounding them. This show could have continued on without Rob Lowe.
Spinoff!
I think it would have better to have Grace traveling for work as a trainer in other 9-1-1 call centers which would have her back home (off screen) between going to other cities for work. I don’t think it is in character at all for Grace to go off and leave her young daughter at home even if she felt called by God.
Who leaves a small child husband, and older child going through challenges.
Writing her out this way does not track with their love story. Could be those two did not get along at all and he wanted her gone.
Better to recast than to get the audience to believe this far fetched garbage.
Couldn’t they have written an ailing family member for Grace from out of state? They could have Judd leave every so often to visit her and their daughter off-camera.
Whats the real reason? Money? Profit? So dont say it was a plan. A storyline. Its not the same. Did they get cheaper writers too. Being on FOX i can think of many other reasons.
They probably had their budget slashed and letting go of a series regular is a way of saving money.
Closure at the end, the passing of Owen from his cancer. The ceremony, people coming together, reminiscing of the seasons highlighting events. Oh, plus its cheaper so money people make more. BUT if done i should get paid for the idea. Not kidding.
Could fake her voice on phone etc.
The last season of the show why couldn’t the actress just have negotiated for a couple of episodes. A little bit in premier a little bit in the finale and all they would’ve needed they could’ve just had offscreen for the rest of the season.
Wouldn’t of worked. They won’t pay her what she is worth. I personally would not go to work for a random day for an hour if my boss said “but Rita, we are only willing to pay you for forty five minutes,” nope my response would be “then tom I will tell you what, I will show up, I will stay forty five minutes and zero seconds, and I will go home.”
You should google how much just those “45” minutes would pay LOL YOUR ENTIRE MONTHS MORTAGE! Lol
Plain and simple, she wanted more than the studio wanted to pay. The studio knew it was the last season, they just weren’t revealing their cards yet and didn’t care how her storyline played out and left it up to the writers to fix.
I hope she sues their asses off and makes them wish they’d paid her what she’s worth in the first place :)
I am completely disappointed in the Grace episode. The deep intense love she has for Judd and their daughter would have been much harder for her to leave. A couple of phone conversations between Judd and Grace discussing the situation (even arguing) might have made the blow a little softer. Very disappointed in the writers.
What happened to the poison gas that started the show? They never got back to it!
It was right at the end of the episode
Seems awfully similar to Gaby Dawson’s departure on Chicago Fire. But it beats killing her off in a helicopter crash off-screen and not showing the aftermath. (Blue Bloods, I’m taking to you).
At least with Monica/Gabby it was the actress decision to leave and it was on good terms that she came back to give Gabby a closure and later to gave the ship too.
Bring her back! The ship can’t be gone forever and she has a 2 year old daughter!
They clearly stopped caring about Grace after Tommy came to the show as black woman representation. look at the difference between Grace costumes on season 1 and after and Tommy’s. Are we supposed to believe a mother of two would’ve all these hair styles that aren’t even suitable for a field work but Grace who works a desk job and without kids at the time always had the same cut and grandma wardrobe?
