It’s official: CBS has handed a straight-to-series order to a Young Sheldon spinoff centered on Georgie and Mandy.
The as-yet-untitled offshoot — which is being penned by Young Sheldon co-creators Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro, and fellow TBBT veteran (and current Sheldon showrunner) Steve Holland — will follow Montana Jordan and Emily Osment‘s fan-favorite character “as they raise their young family in Texas while navigating the challenges of adulthood, parenting and marriage,” according to the official logline.
As first reported by TVLine, Young Sheldon Season 7 will feature Georgie and Mandy’s wedding — more details on which can be found here.
“It has been a privilege to spend the last seven years with Sheldon and the Cooper family and now this wonderful journey will continue with Georgie and Mandy,” CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach said in a statement Tuesday. “Chuck and both Steves have done a masterful job developing these characters and entertaining generations of fans with relatable, heartwarming stories brought to life by Montana and Emily. We eagerly look forward to the next chapter in this beloved universe.”
Added Lorre, Molaro and Holland: “From The Big Bang Theory to Young Sheldon, the world of the Cooper family has been incredibly special to us. We’re very excited to continue their stories through the eyes of Georgie and Mandy.”
Unlike Young Sheldon, which pivoted to a single-camera format, the Georgie-and-Mandy spinoff will revert to multi-cam and shoot in front of a live, studio audience — just like Big Bang. An episode count and release date for Season 1 have not yet been confirmed, but the series is set to premiere during the 2024-25 TV season.
Assuming Young Sheldon‘s narrative keeps at a steady pace, Sheldon will turn 14 in Season 7 — the age at which, per Big Bang’s previously established timeline, the future Nobel Prize winner moves from Medford, Texas, to Pasadena, Calif., to begin his graduate studies at the California Institute of Technology.
That same year, Georgie marries for the first time, and family patriarch George meets his maker, setting up Young Sheldon for a bittersweet sendoff not unlike early ’90s classic The Wonder Years. But time will tell if the spinoff remains true to canon. As Holland previously warned TVLine, “just because [something happened on Big Bang] doesn’t mean it’s a story [our narrator] has to tell.”
The Georgie-and-Mandy offshoot is separate from the previously announced Big Bang Theory spinoff for streaming service Max — which, as of November, was still in the “prenatal” stage according to Lorre.
Not sure changing to multi cam is the right move, but we’ll see.
Fasting to record and cheaper to make
I thought going to single for young Sheldon was a bad idea (it wasn’t), so here’s hoping multi ends up being the right move for this show as well. fingers crossed.
Emily Osment is a multi-camera veteran, and I think the change up will allow for a different pace and humor from Sheldon. I’m looking forward to it personally.
Wow, they’re just milking the Big Bang cow dry at this point. Not surprising of course, but still.
Nobody said you had to watch
1) I don’t watch (I watched TBBT though).
And 2) nobody said I couldn’t talk about it if I didn’t either.
Why do you care about a show you don’t watch then
Headlines in any medium exist with the intent of getting someone to be curious about/interested in the content that follows, regardless of if their interest exists beyond that. It succeeded in that regard. Comment sections don’t only exist to praise something. They exist to share opinions (good or bad, but hopefully not trollish) and maybe even start a discussion.
Imo that should be respected rather than questioned. It would be different if he posted a standard “who cares?” or “nobody asked for this” kind of negative response. Try to be a bit more open minded about that kind of thing. Food for thought. No condescending intent with my post.
Atta go @Eye!
Because I can, I’m allowed to and, in this case I want to.
I thought the same thing, plus “Who’d watch that?” I guess someone…
I never watched TBBT and I have never watched Sheldon. Yet the story was of interest to me as I like to follow the TV industry. I read many article about shows I don’t watch. I don’t need an excuse. Just wanted you to understand SOME people do what I do. I also wouldn’t be commenting here but I felt I wanted to take a moment to expand your understanding.
KEviNTUCKY, Exactly!
Not as bad as The Walking Dead. Please, someone put an ice pick in the skull of that series.
[COMMENT REMOVED DUE TO SYSTEM-DETECTED USE OF MULTIPLE USER NAMES]
In other words, a show following the Coopers after the inevitable death of George Sr, and the moving away of Sheldon. Sheldon can guest star every so often, but the Coopers will revolve around the family, with a focus on Georgie trying to keep people together as they all fall apart.
well I did see commenters here say they wanted to see a show that didn’t focus on Sheldon so they’re kind of getting their wish
Plus, by shipping Sheldon off, they can stop paying Parsons whatever they are currently paying him to narrate and produce. I’d guess he’ll have some tiny ownership, but this saves a TON of money.
.
They’re going to have to be careful with Misty. Her “troubles” are starting. But it will be dicey to show too much bad stuff when the girl is in her mid teens. Handling that will be crucial to the long term success of this show.
.
But we can admit that this one will basically ignore cannon from BBT.
I had read that Jim Parsons collected one million dollars per episode for narrating Young Sheldon.
I do want to see this spinoff, but I also want MeeMaw and Missy to be a part of it.
I don’t think they could possibly do it without them. The Big Bang Theory talked about this time period, and if they stay true to that, then all the Coopers but Sheldon and George Sr, will be there.
Me too. And Mary too. I’m not sure I’d want to watch without them!
I want everyone BUT Sheldon in it. Don’t know why they couldn’t just let Sheldon leave as planned then just rebrand Young Sheldon as The Coopers a la The Conners.
Same. It’s interesting that the worst part of Young Sheldon has always been Sheldon. I’ve always found the character to be insufferable, but the rest of the family are awesome.
eg. The Hogan Family
So happy to ready this! Georgie and Mandy have become two of my favorite characters on Young Sheldon. I’d love to see their story continue.
Great idea, the show has lots of potential
Yes yes yes!!!!!
I could not be happier about this news. My two favorite cast members from my favorite show ever!! Thank you CBS
I hope it involved Annie Potts as well! Maybe she fronts the money to start the tire business or something. She has great chemistry with both of these characters and we know she is homeless now, maybe they can all live together!
I, too, hope Meemaw is a part of the new show. I would assume that Georgie goes into partnership with his new father in law, who would likely welcome a cash transfusion!
Yes ! It definitely needs Mee Maw!!
Just keep MeeMaw, if Annie Potts wants to stay on.
If they don’t keep Missy, then Chuck Lorre is not as smart as I thought he was.
Definitely the heart of Young Sheldon.
Your hard drive definitely needs checking
On the one hand, I’m a fan of Emily Osment, and I like it when actors I like are employed.
On the other hand, just let it end. Stop beating the IP pinata for candy and let this franchise be done, at least for a little while.
*Sigh*… Now I see how easy it is to just give in when people pester a show’s cast and crew about the idea of a spinoff.☹️
Maybe there’s a reason people “pester a show’s cast”, they want to see more of a show or characters they like.
I’ll watch. But there has been a lot of bickering between Georgie and Mandy….if it ends up being a “fight of the week” instead of a comedy I probably won’t stick with it.
Frankly, I find Georgie and Mandy the two most tiresome characters on the show. Maybe going multicam will force the writers to make them funny, but I’m not especially optimistic.
Honestly, I would assume any spinoff or continuation would be Sheldon at Cal-Tech….right.
It would be interesting to have some of the same sets as Big Bang (cafeteria).
Bad idea. Let it go!!!
Love it!
I like this a lot. If the powers that be have any sense, they’ll have Missy, Meemaw and, yes, Mary in it. George as well would be great but they seem determined to kill him off. Mary without Sheldon constantly demanding her attention can now be free to stop being tiresome helicopter mom and grow into what eventually became TBBT Mary who I liked very much. And please, let’s forget about Sheldon as the tiresome narrator — this isn’t his story any more.
It could be narrated by Jerry O’Connell as “Old Georgie.”
I feel like Chuck Lorre has eared the benefit of the doubt from me at this point. I think BBT is one of the best sitcoms (certainly one of the most successful ) of all time, and I really, really like YS. I have high hopes for this.
The Relativity Theory?
That’s actually not bad. You’re hired!
So, we are talking about 2 spinoffs here.
One of them being a Georgie / Mandy 3 camera show and..;
What’?
a separate but crossover 2nd spin of starring the rest of the family including Georgie / Mandy and excluding (mostly) Sheldon and George Sr. (who presumably will meet his demise)
If there is a 2nd splinoff it should be single camera like YS.
I have doubts about a Georgie / Mandy spin off as a separate show being successful/
They had better keep Mee Maw. She has become the heart of YS
It may actually be a good idea, but I really hope they reconsider the return to multi-camera. The shift to single camera really brought that something more to YS as opposite to The Big Bang Theory.
Well we all know they split, don’t feel this spin off was the right choice but hey good sitcom options are very limited nowadays so whatever works.
George Sr. Has to die. Sorry but that has to happen. What doesn’t is George and Mandy divorce. Which seemed that way when George was on BBT played by Jerry o Connell.
This is starting to push it, especially with the Max show already in development. Might as well make it a universe at this point.
