  • Milk is one of those products that you should pay special attention to when purchasing. It is essential to maintain proper handling through storage and consumption to reduce risk of illness. Ensure that you.... 🔷 Inspect the Packaging Carefully Check for any damage, leaks, or swelling in the packaging. Damaged containers can let in bacteria, compromising the milk’s safety. A careful inspection is your first line of defense. 🔷 Choose Pasteurized Milk Always choose pasteurized milk to reduce the risk of harmful bacteria like Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria, which can thrive in raw milk. Pasteurization controls or limits these pathogens while preserving milk’s nutritional profile. 🔷 Store at the Right Temperature To minimize bacterial growth, store milk at 4°C (39°F) or lower. Place it in the coldest part of the fridge (usually near the back) instead of the door, where temperatures can vary significantly. Keeping milk consistently cold slows bacterial growth, extending its freshness. 🔷 Monitor Expiration Dates Check the expiration date to ensure you’ll use the milk before it spoils. Once opened, milk typically stays fresh for 5-7 days. Avoid drinking milk past its expiry, as bacterial counts can increase even if it’s been refrigerated. 🔷🔷 If using Powdered Milk Practice safe handling. Yes, powdered milk can pose some risks as well. Use clean utensils to prevent contamination, and always reseal containers after each use. Cross-contamination can occur if utensils or hands transfer bacteria from other surfaces to the milk. Safe handling practices reduce risks and ensures safe consumption, for you and your family. Happy Food Safety Friday! 🥛💙 #FoodSafetyFriday #MilkSafety #SafeHandling

  • This World Food Day 2024, under the theme "Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future," we are reminded of the fundamental right of every individual regardless of location or circumstance to access safe and nutritious food. Food is essential not just for survival but for leading a healthy, active, and fulfilling life. For us in the Caribbean, this message holds even greater significance. As island nations heavily dependent on imported food and vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, we face unique challenges. Climate-related disruptions such as hurricanes, floods, and droughts frequently threaten our agricultural output and food security. As small island states, we need to prioritize sustainable farming practices that protect our natural resources and enable us to feed our people. This means building resilient local food systems that can withstand the impacts of climate change and reduce our reliance on imports. At Principal Food Safety Ltd., we wholeheartedly support this message. We believe that access to safe and nutritious food is a basic right, and we are committed to helping food businesses through-out the region adopt the best practices needed to provide the highest quality products to consumers. By prioritizing food safety and quality, we help ensure a better life and future for all. 🌱🥗🍞 Let’s continue to work together to make food security a reality for everyone, ensuring a better life and a better future! 💪🌱 FAO, CARICOM: Caribbean Community #WorldFoodDay2024 #RightToFood #CaribbeanFoodSecurity #SustainableFarming #FoodSafety #Resilience #PrincipalFoodSafety

  • 🦠🦠Biofilms are a contamination risk! These are bacteria havens which have developed a protective, slimy layer making them resistant to standard cleaning and sanitation methods. Biofilms can grow on various surfaces in food processing environments, including stainless steel, plastic, and rubber, creating the ideal environment for pathogens like Listeria, Salmonella, and E. coli.🦠🦠 Why Are Biofilms A Threat? ⭕Biofilms can form on food processing equipment, cutting boards, utensils, and food surfaces. Even after routine cleaning, bacteria may survive and spread, contaminating food and putting consumers at risk. ⭕Biofilms are tougher to remove. Standard cleaning methods may only address surface-level dirt and are unable to penetrate the protective layer. ⭕Biofilms are responsible for many foodborne illness outbreaks. In fact, pathogens living in biofilms have been linked to serious food recalls involving products like ready-to-eat meats and dairy. Preventing Biofilms: ✅Surfaces and equipment must undergo regular deep cleaning to remove biofilms. Specialized cleaners and enzymatic agents can help break down the biofilm matrix. ✅Use biofilm-targeted disinfectants, and ensure they reach all cracks, crevices, and hard-to-reach areas. This prevents biofilms from forming in hidden spots. ✅Educate your staff on biofilm risks and the importance of thorough cleaning, especially in food preparation and processing areas. ✅Conduct regular inspections of your facility to identify and address any potential biofilm formation sites before they become a serious problem. Keeping biofilms at bay is essential to ensuring a safe food environment. Proper cleaning and sanitation can break down these barriers and keep food safe for everyone. #FoodSafetyFriday #BiofilmPrevention #FoodSafetyCulture #CleanToProtect #ListeriaControl
