By Sarah Swain|

It's a good job TV medic Dr Nick Coatsworth is not squeamish.

Because he needed to treat himself after a mishap on one of his fishing trips he reveals to 9Travel.

Coatsworth, who is currently starring on Nine show Do you Want to Live Forever with Tracy Grimshaw, said he once ended up with a large fish hook through his leg.

He was fishing in the remote King Ash Bay on the border of the Northern Territory and Queensland.

"My mate was useless so I had to clean the area with Bundaberg Rum and cut the hook with a pair of pliers to get it out," he tells 9Travel.

"Otherwise the trip would have been over."

Favourite spot in the Northern Territory

While family trips for the father-of-three are mainly to the NSW coast from his home in Canberra, Coatsworth loves to go remote when he can get away.

His favourite spot in Australia is Arnhemland sports fishing lodge Dhipirri Barra Lodge in the Northern Territory, 350km from Darwin.

"My favourite holiday is anywhere that can only be accessed by a single-engine Cessna on a dirt airstrip," he said.

However, while he's adventurous, thing don't always go to plan.

No stranger to mishaps

When he was 22, he climbed Africa's highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro.

And he was one of the unfortunate people who suffered from altitude sickness.

"I nearly didn't make the summit, I was the last one up," he says.

"And I thought I was really fit... there were all overweight Germans.

"That was a bit embarrassing."

And he might have been one of Australia's top government doctors, but Coatsworth admits to being a "useless" packer.

"I will turn up and something fundamental will be missing," he confesses.

"I won't have brought a belt, I've got half the pairs of underwear I need. I'm constantly buying a toothbrush."
