Cities, home to over half the global population and responsible for more than 70% of carbon emissions, face increasing environmental hazards. With an additional 2.5 billion people expected to inhabit urban areas by 2050—particularly in lower-income countries—implementing effective climate strategies is essential. International networks and coalitions, such as the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM), the largest alliance of cities and local governments addressing climate change, enable cities to collaborate and share best practices to amplify their global impact. The European Union (EU)-funded Support to the GCoM in Asia project aimed to strengthen this alliance and advance climate action and monitoring in the region. Over three years, GCoM Asia bolstered the global initiative by supporting National Secretariats in #Japan and #Korea, Regional Secretariats in #South and #SoutheastAsia, and expanding involvement in #China. Recently concluded, the GCoM Asia project made significant progress in partnership with National and Regional covenants, cities, and project coordinators 🔽 ✅ Increased the number of GCoM signatories in Asia from 164 to 241, representing over 250 million people. ✅ Developed 21 climate action plans across cities in Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, and India, with the support of local stakeholders. ✅ GCoM signatories in Asia are committed to reducing the equivalent of 284,127,460 megatons of #CO2—comparable to removing 60 million cars from roads annually. 🎬 Watch the video to discover more about climate action in Asian cities and their collaboration with the European Union. #EU I Foreign Policy Instruments #FPI I #GCoM I #Asia #Cities #ClimateAction I Pablo Gándara I Asih Budiati I Jacqueline Chang, AMC® I Ashish Verma I Isabella Hutasoit I Thunpicha Greigarn I Milana Pavlović I Hanna Kuula Verbaan I #Innovation I

With support from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office FCDO-PLANE Nigeria program since 2021, Kano State in #Nigeria has developed policies and plans and trained head teachers and teachers to deliver safe, inclusive, and good quality foundational learning for all. Through the PLANE project, more than 8,000 headteachers have been trained in inclusive school leadership and management before the conduct of school self-evaluation while 5,150 teachers have undergone induction training to improve teaching practices. Using evidence-based approaches, effective governance, and strategic partnerships, PLANE works with state governments (Kano, Kaduna, and Jigawa) at the federal level to elevate the quality of #education in Nigeria, ensuring equitable access and positive learning outcomes for all children.

Stable and safe operations are an international development priority in conflict-affected zones. DAI was well represented at the International Stability Operations Association (ISOA) 2024 conference on Ukraine by the Vice President of Field Engagement Mark McCord and Senior Field Engagement and Communications Manager Svitlana Ramer. They learned the latest trends and best practices in logistics, procurement, and security shared by Ukrainian, Polish, and American speakers (including a panel discussion by USAID representatives)–and engaged with potential subcontracting partners who can enhance project implementation in Ukraine. #FieldEngagement #DAIUkraineImpact #StabilityOps #ISOA2024Ukraine

🌍Strengthening Disaster and Climate Resilience in OACPS The Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) faces serious challenges from climate change and natural hazards. To address these, the 11th #EDF Intra-Africa, Caribbean, and Pacific Natural Disaster Risk Reduction Programme is supporting member countries in reducing disaster impacts and improving preparedness. With a budget of €100.5 million, co-financed by the EU, the programme aims to build resilience to climate-related and biological risks. During the first Global Steering Committee (GPSC) meeting in Brussels, key stakeholders set the strategic direction, approving the ✔ Terms of Reference and the ✔first progress report. These decisions will improve coordination and preparation for events like UN Climate Change COP29 Azerbaijan and foster strong synergies across #Africa, the #Caribbean, and the #Pacific. 🔜 Looking ahead, the GPSC will guide the program’s next phases, including the 4th Global Coordination Meeting in March 2025. DAI, along with other implementing partners, is providing technical assistance to support the effective delivery of this essential programme, enhancing resilience across the #OACPS region. #EU I Secretariat of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) I #DisasterRiskReduction I #Resilience I #UNFCC I #SouthSouthCooperation I #NorthSouthCooperation I #ClimateAction I #SustainableDevelopment I Dr. Pendo Maro I Jean-Rémy Daue I Gustavo Porres Izquierdo I Djordje Puaca
