Hailing from Baltimore, Lawson-Jackson’s love for sports was ignited at an early age.
She nurtured her passion for writing, language, and history, which led her to pursue a career in law. After graduating from Baltimore City College in 1986, she went on to attend Howard University, determined to turn her dreams of becoming a sports and entertainment lawyer into reality.
In an incredible feat of determination and resilience, she not only graduated with her juris doctor but also passed the bar exam on her first attempt, all while pregnant with her daughter, Samira.
“Listen, it was impressive. I don’t know how else to describe it. That’s a commitment. In fact, they had an ambulance because she could’ve delivered early… and they may have needed to take her to a hospital.” That’s how Mark Jackson, her ex-husband, described the remarkable moment to the Baltimore Sun. Starting her career with a solo practice at the Law Office of E.A. Lawson-Jackson, LLC, Lawson-Jackson made a significant leap in November 2010 when she earned her NFL Players Association contract adviser certification.
Driven by ambition and fueled by determination, she recognized the perfect moment to turn her long-held dreams into reality—and didn’t hesitate to seize it.
“When I saw an opportunity… I said, ‘I’m going to get into the sports field… I’ve been wanting to do something with sports all my life,’” Lawson-Jackson added.
“I love watching sports. I love playing sports. I’ve got my daughter involved in sports. I was like, ‘I’m going to do this. I’m going to go ahead and take the exam to be a certified contract adviser for the NFL.”
Breaking barriers and making history, Lawson-Jackson and her daughter Samira have achieved what few ever have. Sharing a deep-rooted passion for sports, the dynamic duo now stand as the first-ever mother-daughter team of certified NFL agents. Among 994 total certified agents, they are also part of an elite group of just 88 women, carving their path in a male-dominated industry.
In a league where history is made on and off the field, NFLPA Director Chineze Nwagbo praised Edy and Samira, saying: “Edy is a great example, which means Samira will be two times better. We always hear of generational wealth, but in this case, it’s a generational opportunity, so I’m not surprised that they’re the first ever.”
