All outdoor social events must be held within an enclosed area with a monitored entrance. Permanent fencing is preferred. However, temporary, quick removal fencing may be accepted. Proper installation and maintenance is expected.

Fence Materials
- A minimum of six feet tall
- Fire-retardant/flame repellant material
Exits
- Emergency exits must be at least 72 inches wide.
- The minimum number of exits depends on capacity.
- For events with 600-750 capacity, the event requires 4 properly sized exits.
Installation

Proper installation includes, but is not limited to, the following:
- Poles
- Panels
- Clips
- Exits
- Signage
Tips for Proper Fence Installation
- There should not be significant gaps under or between panels. Ensure that panels are pulled down to the ground and install all gap screens.
- Valve Boxes have already been installed in each chapter’s yard. Replacements are available through the purchasing bid.
- Posts should be installed upright into valve boxes and sleeves.
- Each post should have five tension bands per panel that will connect to it. The tension bands should be spaced evenly along the posts and stretch the panel into the ground.
- Posts that have a panel on either side will have 10 tension bands. Five of the bands will clip to the panel on one side, and five will clip to the other.
- Some posts will have tension bands and gate hinges. There are three hinges per gate/post. These will need to be installed intermittently with the tension bands for the screens.
- An additional tension band will then slide onto the top of each post to connect the Turnbuckle Tension Cable. If there are cables on each side of the posts, a second tension band will be added to connect the turnbuckle cables on either side.
- The Turnbuckle Tension Cables will clip to the tension bands on each post and will also clip to the top of the screens between the posts. The turnbuckle will need to be tightened to keep the tops of the panels taut.
- There are some locations where the dimensions between posts are less than 10 feet. This is where the Gap Screens will be installed to cover the open spaces. The gap screens will clip onto the same side of the clip that the screen utilize and will span the outside of the post. These should not be installed on the “event” side of the system, but rather on the outside.
- After all the tension bands, clips and screens have been installed, the post caps can be placed on top of each post.
- Gates (with attached exit signs) can be mounted on the hinges.
Storage
Proper storage of fencing is important to maintain quality. The following are tips for the storage of fencing:
- The storage location for the materials should be clean and dry.
- Materials that are damp or dirty should be cleaned and allowed time to dry before storing.
- For ease of installation, tension bands can be left on the posts as long as posts are stored vertically, without weight against the bands. If the bands are left on the posts and the posts are stored horizontally, the weight of the posts could bend/damage the bands so that they are not usable.
- The clean dry screen should be folded and stored neatly.
- Gate screens can be left on the frame for ease of installation.
- For smaller items (i.e. clips, turnbuckle tension cables, post caps, etc.) it is recommended that these are sorted and stored in individual containers.
Temporary Structures
If the chapter elects to erect a temporary structure, i.e. tent, for the event, Environmental Health and Safety Temporary Structures guidelines are to be followed. In addition, a form will need to be completed and submitted directly to EHS. The form is located at the bottom of Temporary Structures webpage.
