Singapore: Yu Sheng – Tossing for Prosperity

Yu Sheng
As the vibrant city-state of Singapore prepares for the Lunar New Year celebrations, one of the most anticipated and beloved traditions takes center stage—Yu Sheng. Also known as raw fish salad, this colorful dish is not only a feast for the eyes but also a ritual rich in symbolism and meaning. Whether enjoyed at family gatherings or in the bustling restaurants of Singapore, Yu Sheng has become a quintessential part of the Lunar New Year festivities, marking a fresh start and wishing prosperity to all who partake in its vibrant toss.

What is Yu Sheng?

Yu Sheng is a lively and interactive dish that typically consists of thinly sliced raw fish, usually salmon, along with a variety of vegetables, herbs, and condiments. Common ingredients include shredded carrots, daikon radish, cucumber, and fried crispy crackers. The dish is dressed with a tangy sauce made from plum, sugar, and other seasonings, which adds a delightful sweetness and depth to the salad.

The key to this dish lies in its interactive ritual—the tossing of the salad. This is where the magic happens. Each ingredient in the dish represents a different blessing or good fortune, and as participants toss the salad together, they wish for success, wealth, health, and happiness in the year to come.

The Meaning Behind the Toss

The tossing of Yu Sheng is more than just a fun tradition; it’s a meaningful and symbolic act of renewal and hope. Here’s a breakdown of some key ingredients and their symbolism:

  • Raw Fish (usually Salmon): Symbolizes abundance and prosperity. The fish is traditionally a symbol of surplus and wealth, as the Chinese word for fish (“yu”) sounds like the word for abundance.

  • Shredded Carrots: Represent good luck and blessings for a bright future. The bright orange color of the carrots is also linked to wealth and vitality.

  • Daikon Radish: Symbolizes the wish for prosperity and good fortune in the coming year.

  • Crispy Crackers: These are meant to bring joy and are tossed into the salad to create a crunch that signifies the sound of happiness and wealth.

  • Peanuts and Sesame Seeds: Represent wealth and prosperity. The more you toss, the more wealth you invite into your life.

  • Plum Sauce: Adds sweetness to life, symbolizing good fortune and positive relationships.

During the toss, participants often shout out “Huat Ah!” (meaning "prosperity" in Hokkien) and make a wish for the new year. The higher the toss, the greater the fortune believed to be attracted.

The Spirit of Togetherness

What truly makes the Yu Sheng ritual special is its communal nature. The entire family or group of friends gathers around the dish, contributing to the toss and sharing in the good wishes for the upcoming year. This sense of togetherness and collaboration embodies the spirit of family bonding and community spirit that is central to the Lunar New Year celebrations.

Whether it’s a quiet family gathering or a grand celebration at a restaurant, the Yu Sheng ritual creates a sense of unity as everyone participates in the festivities with joy and enthusiasm.

Newly Reimagined Three-Bedroom Manors at Capella Singapore Showcase Global Design Narrative

Capella Singapore
Capella Singapore, the flagship resort of Capella Hotels and Resorts on Sentosa Island, is thrilled to unveil the redesigned interiors of its Capella Manor and Colonial Manors. These luxurious manors have been meticulously reimagined to offer modern travellers a refined, private retreat with a unique global design narrative.

Located within the serene, lush rainforest of Sentosa Island, these exclusive, standalone manors combine bespoke furnishings, curated artwork, and thoughtfully designed spaces to create an atmosphere of both intimacy and grandeur. The redesigned manors each feature three ensuite bedrooms, expansive living and dining areas, a private terrace, and a pool — perfect for a sophisticated getaway.

Capella Manor: Curated Comfort Meets Contemporary Chic with a Homely Touch

Designed by Melbourne-based interior decorator Simone Haag, Capella Manor exudes a sense of character and refined elegance, blending contemporary chic with Asian-inspired accents. The manor, spanning 576 sqm over two floors, offers spacious living areas, three beautifully appointed ensuite bedrooms with king-size or twin beds, and an outdoor terrace with a private lap pool surrounded by lush tropical foliage.

Haag's design is a carefully curated collection of vintage pieces, custom contemporary furniture, and commissioned artworks sourced from a global network of artists and artisans. This unique blend of styles creates a memorable atmosphere, where each item tells a story and contributes to the manor's distinct personality. A neutral palette, textured fabrics, and sculptural vignettes in materials such as pewter, ceramics, and rare timbers evoke a sense of effortless luxury.

“Capella Singapore represents a constantly evolving design methodology that is deeply contextual, ensuring that each space feels truly individual and memorable,” says Simone Haag.

Colonial Manors: A Tribute to Heritage and History

The transformation of the two Colonial Manors by Matthew Shang Design Office (MSDO) celebrates their storied past as British military quarters from the 1880s, offering a retreat rich in history. Each manor offers 500 sqm of space over two floors, with three ensuite bedrooms, separate living, dining, and study areas, garden views, and a private pool.

MSDO's design blends modern sensibilities with timeless elements, incorporating maps of old Singapore and vintage furnishings that evoke the spirit of a seasoned traveller. Guests are welcomed by lush greenery and an eclectic mix of artefacts, setting the tone for a stay steeped in cultural significance. The heart of the manor features 'The Nest,' a cozy living space designed for intimate gatherings, complete with Persian rugs and tropical prints that add warmth and vibrancy.

The bedrooms feature textured headboards and serene Roman blinds, while the bathrooms combine modern touches with the charm of dark timbre frames and spherical lights. The downstairs dining and living areas offer enduring tranquillity, perfect for relaxing or socialising, while the outdoor dining area, complete with barbecue facilities and plush seating, provides a tranquil setting beside the private pool.

Curated Hospitality, Manor-Style

The redesigned manors offer guests an elevated stay with personalized services from a dedicated Manor Culturist. Bespoke turndown amenities, a fully stocked fridge with champagne, premium wines, refreshments, and in-manor breakfast ensure a luxurious experience from the moment of arrival. Families will also enjoy curated experiences, such as poolside picnics, dim sum masterclasses, and a range of Capella Wellness rituals, including private yoga by the pool and signature moon-phase spa treatments.

Additionally, guests can immerse themselves in Singapore’s rich culture through heritage tours and gastronomic experiences, with Manor Culturists introducing them to the sights, tastes, and sounds of the locale.

Yngvar Stray, General Manager of Capella Singapore, shared, "This redesign reflects our commitment to creating spaces that celebrate heritage while offering guests an environment that feels like a home away from home. With personal touches and timeless designs, we invite guests to enjoy a tranquil, unforgettable retreat."

Capella Singapore Unveils Refreshed Interiors for Capella Manor and Colonial Manors

Capella Manor
Capella Singapore, the flagship property of Capella Hotels and Resorts on Sentosa Island, is delighted to announce refreshed interiors for their Capella Manor and Colonial Manors. Each meticulously styled manor serves as a private retreat, featuring bespoke furnishings, curated artwork, and thoughtfully crafted spaces that inspire both intimacy and grandeur. Designed as standalone bungalows reminiscent of a private residence, each manor presents its own design aesthetic, complete with three ensuite bedrooms, separate living, dining, and study spaces, a private terrace, and pool.

Located on the fringes of the resort and enveloped by the lush rainforest of Sentosa Island, Capella Manor has been artfully redesigned by Melbourne-based interior decorator, Simone Haag. The two Colonial Manors have undergone a design refresh by Matthew Shang Design Office (MSDO) that honors their storied historical origins.

Capella Manor: Curated Comfort Meets Contemporary Chic with a Homely Touch

Renowned Australian interior decorator Simone Haag’s refresh of Capella Manor elevates the contemporary chic residence with a unique sense of character, enriched by Asian-inspired fabrics, artwork, lighting, and thoughtfully contextual styling. Offering 576 sqm of living space, this manor is arranged over two floors, with king-size or twin beds across three ensuite bedrooms, living and dining areas, and an outdoor terrace with a spacious, private lap pool set in luxuriant surrounds.

Simone Haag shared, “Over many years, we have established a growing network of artists, makers, antique specialists, vintage traders, and designers that spans the globe. Drawing from this treasure trove, we can curate projects unlike anything seen before. Projects that are entirely contextual and highly considerate of the end user’s experience. At Capella Singapore, an evolving design and procurement methodology has shaped a meticulously layered manor where vintage pieces have been woven with custom contemporary rugs, furniture, and commissioned artworks. This invaluable network brings agility, allowing for some beautiful outcomes that contribute to the manor’s ambience and memorability.”

The manor’s neutral palette, subtly patterned wallpapers and fabrics, and tropical foliage mirror the 30 acres of lush landscaped grounds that host Capella Singapore. In the living room, a Pelle Lure Lantern casts soft leafy shadows across the space, while a custom rug in earthy tones of olive, off-white, and rich brown in a free-flowing linear pattern evokes a sense of travel and topography.

Simone Haag pulls the space together seamlessly with handpicked furniture that tells a story blending a restful retreat with a curated narrative. Sculptural vignettes in pewter, ceramics, rare timbers, and glass create the authenticity of a private guesthouse, while storied vintage pieces, such as the pair of 1930s Swedish Carved Monk Chairs and woven Peanut chairs provide focal points that exude individuality.

Colonial Manors: A Tribute to Local Heritage

The transformation of the two Colonial Manors by MSDO pays homage to their past as British military quarters in the 1880s, offering a luxurious retreat steeped in history. Offering a 500 sqm spacious interior, each manor is arranged over two floors of an original heritage building and features three ensuite bedrooms with king-size or twin beds, separate living, dining, and study space, garden views, and a private pool. MSDO drew inspiration from the concept of a globetrotter’s transient dwelling and articulated the narrative by blending maps of old Singapore with timeless furnishings that transcend time and period, bringing the stories and experiences gathered from journeys around the world into the manors.

Upon entering the manor on the upper floor, guests are greeted by lush greenery and an eclectic collection of artefacts along the walkway that leads to ‘The Nest,’ a cozy living space perched away from the heart of the manor, designed with intimate gatherings and shared moments in mind. This social space is given a pop of color against the white walls of the manor, with a hand-knotted Persian rug, tropical printed cushions, and a curation of art pieces.

Nestled on the same level are the three bedrooms, with textured headboards crowning the king-size beds, and soft Roman blinds creating a sense of calm. The bathrooms bring modernity to historic charm with dark timber frames and spherical lights. Downstairs, the living and dining areas exude enduring tranquillity. The dining room takes center stage as the gathering space for the rituals of shared living. Adjacent to the dining room is ‘The Nook,’ a cozy alcove adorned with cushions and framed by soft curtains, creating a haven for unwinding. The outdoor dining area, surrounded by the lush landscape of Capella Singapore, features a barbeque, a dining table that can sit up to six, plush seating, and a canopy, framed by a private pool.

Curated Hospitality, Manor-style

Serene, calming, and radiating sophistication, the redesigned manors offer guests personalized host service by a Manor Culturist, along with bespoke turndown amenities, a fridge stocked with champagne, premium wines, refreshments, and in-manor breakfast. Families choosing to make the manor their home while in Singapore can look forward to a thoughtfully curated stay, enriched by the Manor Culturist, who is on hand to craft personalized and meaningful experiences, from a poolside picnic to dedicated babysitting services and a dim sum masterclass led by the culinary team. A range of Capella Wellness rituals, such as private yoga by the pool, the spa’s signature moon-phase treatments, and a menu of music and art therapy workshops, elevate the manors’ offerings. The vibrancy of Singapore’s history and culture can be discovered through a series of experiential activities, from heritage tours to savoring local gastronomic delights. Manor Culturists will delight in introducing manor guests to the sights, tastes, sounds, and culture of the locale.

Yngvar Stray, General Manager of Capella Singapore, says, “This redesign showcases Capella’s commitment to creating spaces that not only celebrate our heritage but also provide a warm and welcoming environment where guests can seamlessly transition their lifestyle from home to the manors. We believe in offering shared experiences that inspire and create cherished memories that will last well beyond their stay with us. By incorporating personal touches and timeless furnishings, we invite guests to immerse themselves in a tranquil retreat that feels uniquely theirs.”

A one-night stay at Capella Manor starts from SGD 30,000, while the Colonial Manor is priced from SGD 25,000 per night. For bookings and inquiries, please contact Capella Singapore via email at [email protected] or call +65 6377 8888. Please visit Capella Singapore Manors for more information.

Asia Pacific travel market sees uneven recovery, India emerges as a powerhouse

The Asia Pacific travel market is experiencing an uneven recovery, with India emerging as a key growth driver while China's outbound travel remains slower than anticipated.  This was one of the key takeaways from the "Intelligence Watch: Next Generation Trends" session at the Web in Travel (WiT) Singapore conference last month.

Industry experts Pete Comeau, Managing Director of Phocuswright; Linda Fox, Executive Editor of PhocusWire; and Sean Fitzpatrick, CEO of Lighthouse, delved into the evolving landscape of online travel, reflecting on past predictions, current trends, and future directions.

"This session provided a valuable reality check on the state of the APAC travel market,” said Siew Hoon Yeoh, founder of Web in Travel.  “While we are seeing positive growth in certain areas, like India, the slower-than-expected recovery of China's outbound travel is a reminder that the industry still faces challenges. It also underscores the need for travel businesses to be agile and adaptable, embracing new technologies and strategies to capture emerging opportunities."

Key trends for the next generation of travel leaders:

  • Mixed recovery in Asia: While China's international outbound travel has not fully rebounded to pre-pandemic levels, India has emerged as a key market with significant growth in both inbound and outbound travel sectors.
  • The future of AI in hotel operations: AI's role in hotel operations is projected to become indispensable in the near future, aiding in daily decision-making and optimizing for revenue management.
  • Data-driven decisions in hotel revenue management: Hotels are increasingly adopting data and AI technologies for revenue management, with larger chains leading the way and independent hotels becoming more open to these tools.
  • The impact of AI on travel marketing dynamics: The integration of AI is reshaping digital marketing in travel, with companies looking to reduce reliance on Google and invest more in social media and direct customer engagement.
  • Independent hotels' growing adoption of AI: Independent hotels are beginning to embrace AI for operational decision-making, with affordable and accessible technology solutions leveling the playing field with larger chains.
  • Generative AI's increasing influence in travel: Investments in generative AI are accelerating within the travel industry, enhancing traveler-facing features and automating business operations, although widespread adoption varies.
  • The slow rollout of digital ID and biometrics: Digital ID and biometric solutions are gradually being implemented across the travel industry, with the potential to transform various touchpoints like airports and cruise lines.
  • The shift to digital channels in Asia Pacific: The Asia Pacific region is at the forefront of adopting digital channels for travel, with a significant shift from offline to online bookings likely to continue.
  • The struggle for hotel distribution control: Hotels, especially in fragmented markets of Asia Pacific, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East, continue to battle for control over their distribution against the dominance of online travel agencies (OTAs).
  • The evolution and resilience of online travel companies: Online travel companies have demonstrated remarkable resilience and growth over the past three decades, successfully navigating through economic shifts, market conditions, and the recent pandemic.

The Web in Travel Singapore conference brought together over 500 travel leaders from across the APAC region to delve into the transformative trends shaping the future of the industry.  Themed ‘Next Generation’, the event served as a vital platform for fostering collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing, empowering travel businesses to navigate the challenges and opportunities of this dynamic landscape.
