Competing in a crowded field, Dexon cinched the top place for Best Innovative Company Award among companies listed on the MAI. This marks Dexon's second consecutive year of winning in this category. SET granted the award to Dexon due to the company’s advances in transducer technology and production. #Innovation in such a small part might not sound like a major achievement, but read on to see why it warranted such acclaim. 💠 Understanding Transducers For those new to this technology, here’s a bit of context. In-line inspection (ILI) tools inspect pipelines by traveling through the pipe, scanning its interior and collecting data to assess the line's integrity. Dexon primarily uses ultrasonic waves to do this. Waves are sent out from the transducer, bounce off the pipe walls and any defects, and return back to the transducers. These signals are recorded in the tool’s hard drive and later interpreted by Dexon's software and analysts. The technology works much like how dolphins use echolocation to navigate their surroundings, with the transducer functioning as both the mouth and the ears of the device. The clearer the signal, the better the data and the more accurate the inspection. 💠The Challenge Previously, Dexon outsourced #transducer production. While this spared the company from handling the manufacturing process in-house, it also introduced several challenges: 🔹Finding reliable suppliers was difficult. 🔹Dexon struggled to get transducers tailored to its specifications. 🔹Costs were high, and delivery times were very slow. Outsourcing led to major bottlenecks. One UT tool can use over a thousand transducers, and an order of 1,000 units typically took 12-20 months to be delivered. For a company built on customizing solutions for customers, waiting over a year to get these components was a thorn in the side. 💠The Solution In 2020, the #RDE team took matters into their own hands. For two years, they worked to develop the in-house capability to produce transducers. Through research, prototyping, and building the right team, Dexon began producing its own transducers in 2022. The results were game-changing. 🔹Delivery speed increased tenfold. 🔹Costs were reduced by four times. 🔹UT tools ran faster and more efficiently. 🔹UT tools could operate in thicker mediums with greater accuracy. 💠The Outcome In the inspection business, every element – from the transducer to the battery – is essential. With sensitive tools operating at such a refined level, ILI providers must leverage every part to increase effectiveness and deliver results that clients can trust. SET’s Best Innovative Company Award recognizes Dexon’s commitment over the last 25 years to continuously push the technology and improve their capabilities. Last year, the SET awarded the company top place for their UT-CD tool. This year, the SET has recognized another important element of Dexon’s effort to refine its inspection fleet: transducer production.

As much as operators hate to admit it, cracks in #pipelines are unavoidable. How operators anticipate and address them spells the difference between disaster and smooth operations. 💠Crack Origins and Effects Cracks can arise from various sources, including: 🔹 Stresses from the environment. 🔹 Stresses and damage from use. 🔹 Manufacturing defects. Regardless of the cause, neglected cracks can lead to the same place: leaks. Most leaks are minor, but if ignored, a small leak can turn into a rupture. Ruptures can devastate the environment, ruin a company's reputation, and cost billions in repairs. To prevent leaks and fend off disaster, operators must regularly inspect their lines. Most companies, even the big boys, lack the skills and equipment to inspect their lines. Instead, they hire external contractors. Highly specialized tools and engineers come with a high price tag, but they are a drop in the bucket compared to the costs of a rupture. 💠The Solution Advanced in-line inspection (ILI) tools allow engineers to inspect a hundred miles of piping without halting operations. #ILI tools typically run at the pipe’s speed (around 1m/s) while spotting millimeter-sized cracks along the way. #Ultrasonic testing (UT) is the go-to method for crack detection. UT tools emit ultrasonic waves in the pipe and record the signals as they bounce back from the walls. These signals are then analyzed to assess the wall’s integrity. 💠Dexon’s UT-CD Hawk Dexon’s Ultrasonic Crack Detection (UT-CD) Hawk tool is engineered specifically for crack detection in pipelines and relies on a method called crack tip diffraction. Essentially, when the sound wave encounters a crack, the wave distorts, similar to how ocean waves disperse when they hit a rock. Transducers collect this irregular signal and record it on a hard drive. Using advanced software, Dexon’s data analysts can accurately identify the location and size of cracks. The UT-CD Hawk offers: ⚬ The detection of axial, circumferential, and other crack types ⚬ High-resolution measurements of 1,000,000 samples/m² ⚬ Crack sizing up to 1mm ⚬ Metal loss detection ⚬ Customizable design 💠 Reporting Process After completing the run, Dexon provides three-phases of reporting: ⚬ Operations Report: Delivered immediately after the run, this report reviews operation and data quality. ⚬ Preliminary Report: Issued around a week post-inspection, this report highlights anomalies that may require urgent attention. ⚬ Final Report: A thorough analysis of all detected anomalies paired with actionable insights. These reports allow #operators to effectively monitor, anticipate, and address potential defects, ensuring the integrity of their pipelines. 💠Connect with Dexon Interested in learning more about how our UT-CD tool and inspection process can enhance your operations? Eastern Seaboard of Thailand – September 15 – Dexon Technology has successfully executed a custom solution for a pair of challenging 12” subsea pipelines. These lines connect an onshore pumping station to a sea berth, providing tankers with jet fuel and diesel for international transport. With tight shipping schedules and high downtime costs, executing a rapid inspection without sacrificing top-tier quality was crucial for the client. To minimize downtime and reduce costs, Dexon proposed a bidirectional run for the inspection. 🔷 The Challenge While a bidirectional run offered clear benefits, it presented two challenges: ∘ The standard version of Dexon’s Ultrasonic Testing Multi-channel (UT-MC) Ring needed adjustments to bidirectionally navigate the tight turns. ∘ The pipeline needed a customized launcher and receiver. 🔷 Customizing the UT-MC Ring for Bidirectional Runs The client wanted to avoid placing a receiver at the sea berth, as it would require an additional day of shutdown and a complex installation. The inspection needed to be bidirectional. While bidirectional runs are typical in the industry, running this line required adapting the tool to minimize risks. Typically, ultrasonic tools are optimized for one-directional use, with flexible joints to ensure proper centering and navigation through sharp turns; adding a return journey increases the chance of error. Dexon utilized its compact UT-MC Ring, confident that it would be up for the task. The key features of this UT-MC Ring include: ∘ Compact design with condensed electronics, hard drive, and transducers. ∘ Joint-free construction to reduce the risk of the tool getting stuck on sharp turns. ∘ High accuracy in detecting corrosion and metal loss with ±0.3mm precision. ∘ Compliance with POF 2021 standards for inspection and reporting. 🔷 Creating a Custom Launcher Another challenge was the absence of a launcher and receiver. Dexon’s engineering team, experienced in designing custom launchers, stepped in to create a bespoke solution. Using the operator’s plans, they created a specialized launcher onshore. This tailored setup enabled Dexon to inspect the pipeline while keeping petroleum flowing and avoiding the need for an expensive receiver at the berth. The launcher design was also provided to the operator free of charge. 🔷 The Outcome Despite the challenges posed, Dexon successfully completed the inspection. Following an initial cleaning and assessment, the customized UT-MC Ring finished the inspection in just over two hours. The data was then reviewed by Dexon’s team, who confirmed that it met the company’s high standards. This project highlights Dexon’s ability to deliver tailored solutions to meet clients' unique needs. By customizing both the inspection tool and providing essential services like launcher design, Dexon minimized downtime while maintaining high-quality data and pipeline integrity—all while keeping costs under control.
