We are thrilled to announce the U.S. DOT Volpe National Transportation Systems Center #LEEDPlatinum certification. To meet the stringent energy targets set forth by the GSA, Atelier Ten and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) pushed the project beyond typical high-performance design. The team optimized the building envelope to reduce loads and improve daylight, advocated for electrification as much as possible, and integrated responsible water management. Through carefully implemented sustainability strategies, the U.S. Department of Transportation #VolpeCenter Headquarters achieves a 41% regulated energy savings, a 57% reduction in fossil fuel generated energy use, a 60% reduction in incident solar radiation and up to 15,000 gallons of water savings. Exciting news! The Àrd in Glasgow has received planning approval from Glasgow City Council. Atelier Ten is delighted to be delivering the building services design, fire and environmental engineering for this project. This unique mixed use development will bring 784 purpose-built student units to Glasgow city centre. Set to be the tallest residential building in Scotland, at 36 storeys, providing views of the surrounding cityscape, construction will involve partial retention of the old HMRC building on India Street. Upon completion, the scheme will create ensuite rooms and studios, helping to meet the increasing rental housing demands of Glasgow’s universities.

Our project team from Atelier Ten toured the construction site of the new expansion of the California College of the Arts. Beyond the hybrid mass timber and steel framing pavilions, one of the key characteristics of the project is the integration of indoor and outdoor space. As a highly passive building, the majority of the spaces within the new building have abundant access to daylight and natural ventilation. The design uses courtyards to minimize the depth of the building massing. This extends the spaces usable area and activates the courtyards while naturally ventilating the space to reduce energy loads. Thank you to Hathaway Dinwiddie for the tour. Atelier Ten participated in Urban Land Institute's recent Embodied Carbon Convening bringing together experts from KPF, EHDD, Gensler, and Thornton Tomasetti. Leanora Paniccia presented on the embodied carbon study for Vornado Realty Trust's Penn 2 redevelopment in New York City. A major takeaway from Penn 2 is that the reduction in up-front embodied carbon emissions vastly outweighed the emissions added for the renovation and the adaptive reuse of the foundation and structure eliminates. Join Atelier Ten at the 22nd International Radiance Workshop in Salt Lake City, Utah next week! Seif Eses will speak on "Radiance Techniques for Rad Indoor Environments". Seif will provide a walkthrough of different analyses and visualization techniques using Radiance for projects that prioritize occupant comfort and experience. The Atelier Ten projects presented evaluate interior concepts such as visual comfort, thermal comfort, daylighting, and indoor plant growth. John King reviews the new Helen Diller Anchor House at University of California, Berkeley. We provided sustainability consulting to the project team including Morris Adjmi Architects, BDE Architecture and Prometheus Real Estate Group. "As for the tall imposing form, the variety of textures and patterns bring it to life: check out the clean metal sun shades snapped above residential windows, or the rounded brick-clad columns that frame the gouged-out terraces."  Atelier Ten studied various shading and natural ventilation strategies to significantly increase comfort for residents during emergencies and also increase energy efficiency during normal operations. External shading was integrated on the south, east, and west facades to reduce the need for air conditioning, improve occupant comfort and increase resilience. Integrating passive design strategies into this new residence was a critical element due to the recent increase in public safety power shutoffs as a result of climate change. #buildingscience #highereducation #studenthousing https://lnkd.in/e9tj39Zq
