Carson Foster finished his summer as a first-time Olympian and a 2x Olympic medalist. Returning to Austin this fall, Foster is going through a ton of change. His longtime coaches at Texas, Eddie Reese and Wyatt Collins, are now replaced by Bob Bowman and his staff. In his personal life, Foster just married his longtime partner, Meredith, and is now living with her. SwimSwam spoke with the world champion about his whirlwind summer and all the changes he’s adapting to now in Texas.

Carson refers to 2 Olympics within a month due to trials being a 9 day meet. His comments inadvertently seem to confirm my own theory that trials was too much of a spectacle and too close to OLYs. Many swimmers particularly on the men’s side couldn’t peak again for OLYs and swam slower. Carson also seemed to confirm that environmental factors in Paris like conditions in the OLY village, food or buses might have had less to do with it. I know trials is USA swimming’s baby, but I think if they really want to improve OLY performance and medal count, it needs to be rethought. Slightly unrelated, but does anyone if Shaine has decided to join Bowman at Texas?
I saw a video from after the Trials but before the games, where he said he was excited to get to work with a new coach, but since then I haven’t seen anything showing Casas has been in the water and the staff has posted several clips showing practice and don’t think I’ve seen Shaine anywhere.
Actually, looking back at it now, Bowman posted a short clip less than a day ago and Shaine’s clearly in the water
This IM training group is astounding. How many elite male and female IMers* (*or, perhaps more accurately, elite swimmers who are competitive in IM races) are part of this training group now** (Marchand, Foster, Casas, R.Smith, etc.)?
(**Or, in Marchand’s case, as of January 2025)
Marchand: World/Olympic champion in 200/400IM, World (400IM) and European record (200IM) holder
Foster: World Championship silver medalist (200/400IM), Olympic bronze medalist (400IM)
Casas: World Championship and Olympic finalst in the 200IM, with a 1:55 low PB
Smith: 2:08 PB in the 200IM, even though it’s an off event for her
Kos: World Championship finalist, European Champion, WJR holder in the 200IM
off the top of my head, and these are the best of the best on the team.

He has likely signed an agent at this point and had performance bonuses in his contract which renders someone a pro and ineligible. That may change at some point down the line, but I don’t think it will be retroactively applied. I also don’t think that he has any desire to pursue short course yard racing again and he is better suited for the big pool.
