CMS: Changing Your Collection Permissions
5 min read
In the CMS (Content Management System), you can change your collection permissions to control who can view, add, update, or delete collection content on your live site. The most common way visitors modify collection content from the live site is with input elements set to collect content. Collection permissions help you manage live site access to your collection content and maintain the security of your site's data.
For example, if you run an online community, you might want to allow only registered members to view and contribute to certain collections, ensuring that sensitive information stays within your trusted user base.
Important differences between permission types:
- Collection permissions: Determine who can access the CMS collection content from your live site and what they can do with the content (e.g. view, add items, update existing content, delete content). Usually, this is done with input elements, but can also be done with the Data API. Collaborators are always considered 'admins' in collection permissions that control what people can do from the live site.
- CMS roles & permissions: The roles and permissions you assign to collaborators determine what they can do from within the CMS itself. This differs from what collaborators can do from your live site. All collaborators are considered 'admins' in the context of your collection permissions.

Changing your collection permissions
To change the permissions for a collection, go to the collection's settings and access the Permissions & privacy tab. Then choose the relevant option to show content, collect content, or create custom permissions.
Important:
Setting collection permissions to 'Everyone' means any site visitor can access the collection by using an API, even if the content is not presented on the live site. Learn more about using authorization suppression with the Data API to bypass permissions.
To change your collection permissions:
- Go to CMS in your site's dashboard. Alternatively, you can click CMS in your editor, then click Your Collections.
- Hover over the relevant collection, click the More Actions icon and select Permissions & privacy.
