Add a title, heading, or table of contents in a document

You can organize your document with text styles like titles, headings, and a table of contents.

Make a title or heading

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open a document in the Google Docs app.
  2. Select the text you want to change.
  3. On the toolbar, tap Format Format.
  4. Tap TEXT and then Style.
  5. Tap a text style:
    • Normal text
    • Title
    • Subtitle
    • Heading 1-6
  6. The text style will be updated.

Add a table of contents

Each item in the table of contents links to the titles and headings in your document.

Note: To use a table of contents, Print layout must be on and the document must include text with Heading or Title style formatting. Learn how to turn Print layout on.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open a document in the Google Docs app.
  2. Tap a document.
  3. At the bottom right, tap Edit Edit.
  4. Tap where you want the table of contents to be.
  5. At the top right, tap Insert Add.
  6. Tap Table of contents.
  7. Choose how you want the table of contents to look.
Edit a table of contents

To edit a table of contents you need to update the headings in your document.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open a document in the Google Docs app.
  2. Add a heading in your document.
  3. Tap anywhere in your table of contents and then Update Table of Contents.
