The development of a teacher professional learning workshop to support the General Relativity sec... more The development of a teacher professional learning workshop to support the General Relativity section of the Scottish Qualifications Authority Advanced Higher Physics course [1] for 17-18 year old secondary school students is described. This professional learning workshop is designed to support the development of teachers’ subject matter knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge so they are better able to provide a conceptual, non-mathematical approach to teaching curved spacetime, spacetime diagrams and evidence of the tests for General Relativity. The professional learning workshop draws on a number of resources including the educational outreach materials from the Perimeter Institute [2,3,4].

The Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) provided the backbone of current reforms in which the emphasis on skills is seen as more important and potentially more lasting than concentrating on knowledge. Formal continuing professional development for teachers is seen as an important consideration for the near future.
In the spring of 2014, the Learned Societies' Group on Scottish Science Education (LSG) condu... more In the spring of 2014, the Learned Societies' Group on Scottish Science Education (LSG) conducted a survey of resourcing of practical science in Scottish primary and secondary schools. This was designed to identify barriers to conducting practical work in terms of resourcing for equipment, provision of facilities and technician support. This article reports on the findings of this survey, compares the findings with work on costing the adequate delivery of practical science in the curriculum, and identifies some next steps.
