Calgary Farmers' Market
Almost two decades ago, Calgary Farmers’ Market (CFM) opened its doors in a leased historic airplane hangar. In no time, Calgarians began showing up in droves to source local goods and support small businesses, which would eventually turn CFM into a local institution. In the summer of 2022, CFM wanted to expand its reach by opening a second location in the city’s western edge, which greets visitors coming into the city. The CFM team decided to entrust Govan Brown’s Calgary team to fit out their newest landmark location.
After being handed over the core and shell building from the base builders, Govan Brown’s Calgary team built-out the 59,000sf space for the 67 small business vendors who would eventually call CFM West home. The structural layout of the project featured the main market space, a food hall with 12 commercial kitchens, a second-floor event space, and a kids play area.
One of the main challenges, given the impressive number of stakeholders involved, was adhering to the expectations of 67 vendors. In order to properly communicate with and develop the proper agility for this large set of vendors, the team utilized a vendor coordinator, leveraged their previous experience in building hospitality spaces, and tackled the space in sections to not only organize the site, but also properly divide the manpower for increased efficiency and safety.
The team’s commitment to the project and drive to go beyond convention delivered a space CFM and its vendors could be proud to call home. After careful organization and strong pre-planning, the Govan Brown team was able to complete the project before CFM’s summer 2022 opening.
