Brown is expected to sign a one-year deal worth up to $11 million with the Chiefs, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
The Chiefs are going all in on a three-peat quest but knew heading into free agency that upgrading the receiver position was a must. The acquisition of Brown accomplishes that to a degree, particularly if the speedster can play a full season for the first time since 2020. Brown will only be 27 during the 2024 campaign, so the one-year experiment could work well for both sides.
Moore will be asked to step up in Kansas City's offense with Rashee Rice sidelined by a knee injury, Adam Teicher of ESPN reports.
Moore has underwhelmed in his first two seasons and was projected to be cut out of the offense entirely after the team signed Hollywood Brown and drafted Xavier Worthy during the offseason. However, with Brown and now Rice sidelined, coach Andy Reid suggested that Moore will be asked to step up. That began in Week 4 when Moore saw his first two targets of the season, although he was unable to convert them into receptions.
Coach Andy Reid said Kansas City will not ask Worthy to make up for the loss of Rashee Rice on his own, Adam Teicher of ESPN reports.
Worthy is being thrust into the spotlight with Hollywood Brown already likely lost for the season and Rashee Rice expected to face a multi-week absence. However, Reid and the team are trying to keep pressure off the explosive rookie, insisting they'll spread the ball around to other options in the offense. JuJu Smith-Schuster and Skyy Moore are expected to see more playing time and opportunities as well.
Rice suffered a knee injury in Sunday's win over the Chargers that could be a season-ending ACL tear, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
The wideout underwent testing Monday, per Rapoport, but Kansas City has yet to provide a diagnosis for the injury. Rice was off to a fantastic start to the season, posting a 24-288-2 line on 29 targets through the first three games, but he lasted only four snaps in Week 4 before getting hurt. Rookie Xavier Worthy is expected to step into a bigger role while Rice is sidelined, and players like JuJu Smith-Schuster, Skyy Moore and Mecole Hardman could also see more action. Kansas City has already lost Hollywood Brown to shoulder surgery, which is expected to keep him out for the entire regular season.
Worthy could be Kansas City's top wide receiver moving forward, as Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Rashee Rice is feared to have torn his ACL in Sunday's 17-10 win over the Chargers.
Hollywood Brown is already expected to miss the regular season due to a shoulder injury, and if Rice is also sidelined for the rest of the season, Worthy would presumably become the top option in a Chiefs wide receiver room that also includes Justin Watson, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Skyy Moore and Mecole Hardman. Worthy caught a 54-yard touchdown after Rice got hurt Sunday, giving Worthy three scrimmage touchdowns in his first four NFL games.
Mahomes could be without top wide receiver Rashee Rice for the rest of the season, as Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Rice is feared to have torn his ACL in Sunday's 17-10 win over the Chargers.
If Monday's MRI confirms a torn ACL for Rice, he would be out for the remainder of the season. Hollywood Brown is already sidelined for the regular season due to a shoulder injury, so Mahomes could be without two of the team's projected top three wide receivers heading into the regular season. Rookie first-round pick Xavier Worthy is likely to lead Kansas City's wide-receiver room moving forward.
Harrison Butker converted one of two field-goal attempts Sunday as the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 17-10. He made a kick of 37 yards, and missed a 65-yarder. Butker tacked on two PATs.
Noah Gray had four receptions for 40 yards Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 17-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.
Justin Watson had two receptions for 27 yards Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 17-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.
Xavier Worthy had three receptions for 73 yards and one touchdown Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 17-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.
Travis Kelce had seven receptions for 89 yards Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 17-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.
Carson Steele ran for six yards on two carries Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 17-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. He added one reception for zero yards and fumbled once.
Samaje Perine ran for 14 yards and one touchdown on five carries Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 17-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.
Kareem Hunt ran for 69 yards on 14 carries Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 17-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. He added two receptions for 16 yards.
Patrick Mahomes was 19 of 29 for 245 yards and threw one touchdown pass Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 17-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. He threw one interception, didn't fumble and was sacked three times. Mahomes added 12 rushing yards on five carries.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid said the team is still performing tests on Rice's injured right knee, though he confirmed the wide receiver will miss at least this week's game against New Orleans.
Multiple outlets reported that Rice was believed to have torn his ACL in Sunday's win over the Chargers, though initial tests have reportedly proven to be inconclusive. Fantasy owners should still be preparing for a long absence from Rice, whose 24 catches and 288 receiving yards through four games still leads the Chiefs by a wide margin. Xavier Worthy and possibly JuJu Smith-Schuster could see their roles expand significantly as a result.
Kelce said in the latest episode of his "New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce" podcast that he's not concerned about the slow start to his season. "I'm not getting caught up in getting the targets and all that," Kelce said. "I just want to have a successful offense. I think Pat's doing a great job of finding the open guy and making the right decisions right now."
Kelce has recorded just eight receptions for 69 yards over his first three games, although he did have a 41-yard pass called back due to penalty. The catch and yardage totals are Kelce's fewest in a three-game span within a single season of his career, and he's averaging a modest 0.8 yards per route run. However, Kelce noted he's already earned plenty of individual statistical accolades and is much more concerned with the team piling up wins in its quest for a third consecutive Super Bowl title.
Steele will be joined in the Chiefs backfield by veteran Kareem Hunt for Sunday's matchup against the Chargers after the latter was signed off the practice squad Wednesday, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
The undrafted rookie handled lead-back responsibilities with aplomb in last Sunday's win over the Falcons, rushing 17 times for 72 yards and adding a two-yard reception. Steele ceded some snaps to Samaje Perine, who logged nine total touches in Kansas City's 22-17 win. With Hunt now joining the fray and Reid confirming that the veteran will be activate against the Chargers, Steele may inevitably see at least a slight downturn in opportunity.
Hunt was officially added to the Chiefs' active roster from the practice squad Wednesday, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
Hunt had last been with the Chiefs as a member of the active roster back in 2018. After making his return to Kansas City last week as a member of the practice squad, the veteran back quickly earned a promotion, and head coach Andy Reid already stated that Hunt would be active for Sunday's matchup against the Chargers. However, how many snaps Hunt will see is uncertain, considering rookie Carson Steele performed well as the Chiefs' No. 1 back in this past Sunday's win over the Falcons.
Travis Kelce had four receptions for 30 yards Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 22-17 win over the Atlanta Falcons.
Harrison Butker converted three of three field-goal attempts Sunday as the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Atlanta Falcons 22-17. He made kicks of 53, 44 and 21 yards. Butker tacked on one PAT, but also missed one.
Rashee Rice had 12 receptions for 110 yards and one touchdown Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 22-17 win over the Atlanta Falcons. He added one rush for one yard.
Noah Gray had one reception for 13 yards Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 22-17 win over the Atlanta Falcons.
JuJu Smith-Schuster had two receptions for 17 yards and one touchdown Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 22-17 win over the Atlanta Falcons.
Xavier Worthy had two receptions for 17 yards Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 22-17 win over the Atlanta Falcons. He added three rushes for 13 yards.
Justin Watson had one reception for 13 yards Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 22-17 win over the Atlanta Falcons.
Carson Steele ran for 72 yards on 17 carries Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 22-17 win over the Atlanta Falcons. He added one reception for two yards.
Samaje Perine ran for 25 yards on six carries Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 22-17 win over the Atlanta Falcons. He added three receptions for 15 yards.
Patrick Mahomes was 26 of 39 for 217 yards and threw two touchdown passes Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 22-17 win over the Atlanta Falcons. He threw one interception, didn't fumble and was not sacked. Mahomes added 17 rushing yards on six carries.
Ingram was signed to the Chiefs' 53-man roster off the practice squad Wednesday following the news that Isiah Pacheco is expected to miss six-to-eight weeks due to a fractured fibula.
Ingram joins rookie Carson Steele and veteran Samaje Perine on the active roster heading into a Week 3 matchup against the Falcons. Steele has averaged just 3.0 yards per carry and Perine hasn't recorded a rushing attempt in 2024 after averaging 3.1 YPC with the Broncos last season, so there could be an opening for Ingram to grab a larger role, though Ingram's own career average of 2.2 YPC doesn't inspire much confidence.
Suamataia was replaced by Wanya Morris at left tackle for the final drive of Sunday's 26-25 win over the Bengals, per Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star, and coach Andy Reid wouldn't commit to a starter at the position in Week 3 against the Falcons, Pete Sweeney of Arrowhead Pride reports.
Suamataia struggled against Cincinnati's pass rush and committed a key penalty in the fourth quarter prior to being benched for Morris. The two young left tackles competed for the starting job in training camp, and they may find themselves rotating again in practice before a starter is named for Week 3.
Morris replaced Kingsley Suamataia at left tackle for the final drive of Sunday's 26-25 win over the Bengals, per Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star, and coach Andy Reid wouldn't commit to a starter at the position in Week 3 against the Falcons, Pete Sweeney of Arrowhead Pride reports.
After Suamataia was consistently overwhelmed by Cincinnati's pass rush and committed a critical penalty, Morris did his job on the final possession, which resulted in Harrison Butker's game-winning field goal. Morris also caught a one-yard touchdown after reporting as eligible earlier in the game. With Suamataia struggling, Morris has a chance to take over as the starter on Patrick Mahomes' blind side.
Harrison Butker converted two of two field-goal attempts Sunday as the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 26-25. He made kicks of 19 and 51 yards. Butker tacked on two PATs.
Jared Wiley had one reception for seven yards Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 26-25 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
Rashee Rice had five receptions for 75 yards and one touchdown Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 26-25 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
Travis Kelce had one reception for five yards Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 26-25 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. He added one rush for one yard.
Xavier Worthy had two receptions for 17 yards Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 26-25 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. He added one rush for five yards.
Justin Watson had two receptions for 22 yards Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 26-25 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
Samaje Perine ran for zero yards on zero carries Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 26-25 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. He added one reception for three yards.
Pacheco had surgery Wednesday to repair a fractured fibula he suffered in the Chiefs' Week 2 win over Cincinnati. Initial reports state he's expected to miss six to eight weeks, but head coach Andy Reid said he wasn't sure if Pacheco's return would come "this season or next season."
The Chiefs hope to find a dependable lead back during Pacheco's absence from among a group consisting of Carson Steele, Samaje Perine and the newly re-signed Kareem Hunt. Clyde Edwards-Helaire could enter the mix as well if he's ready to come off the non-football injury list when first eligible in Week 5. It's believed the undrafted rookie Steele will get first crack at the job.
Carson Steele ran for 24 yards on seven carries Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 26-25 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. He fumbled once.
Patrick Mahomes was 18 of 25 for 151 yards and threw two touchdown passes Sunday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 26-25 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. He threw two interceptions, didn't fumble and was sacked two times. Mahomes added 29 rushing yards on four carries.
Brown could be in danger of missing the rest of the season due to his sternoclavicular injury, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
Brown will be undergoing surgery Monday in Colorado and has already been placed on injured reserve, meaning he'll miss at least the next four games. Head coach Andy Reid conceded Friday that Brown could miss "months," a drastic turn of events after the veteran receiver had been progressing well in his rehab. However, a recent evaluation found Browns' bone had moved, and further consultations confirmed the need for the surgery.
Harrison Butker converted two of two field-goal attempts Thursday as the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Baltimore Ravens 27-20. He made kicks of 32 and 31 yards. Butker tacked on three PATs.
Rashee Rice had seven receptions for 103 yards Thursday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 27-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens.
Noah Gray had three receptions for 37 yards Thursday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 27-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens.
Justin Watson had one reception for 25 yards Thursday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 27-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens.
Xavier Worthy had two receptions for 47 yards and one touchdown Thursday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 27-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens. He added one rush for 21 yards.
Travis Kelce had three receptions for 34 yards Thursday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 27-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens.
Carson Steele ran for three yards on two carries Thursday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 27-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens.
Isiah Pacheco ran for 45 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries Thursday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 27-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens. He added two receptions for 33 yards.
Samaje Perine ran for zero yards on zero carries Thursday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 27-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens. He added one reception for 10 yards.
Patrick Mahomes was 20 of 28 for 291 yards and threw one touchdown pass Thursday in the Kansas City Chiefs' 27-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens. He threw one interception, didn't fumble and was sacked two times. Mahomes added three rushing yards on two carries.
Kelce said Tuesday he does not anticipate having a lesser role in 2024, Adam Teicher of ESPN reports.
Kelce was asked if he expects Kansas City's offense to begin accounting for his age and past workload, but he bristled at the thought and said he wouldn't listen even if the team tried to limit his role. Kelce then went on to say he feels very prepared for the season physically and is more aware of how his body is feeling as compared to past campaigns. He's coming off his worst statistical season since 2015 but seemingly is confident he'll bounce back in 2024.
Reid believes details on a potential contract extension with the Chiefs will work themselves out, Charles Goldman of AtoZSports.com reports.
Reid has been a mainstay in the Kansas City secondary for the last two seasons and is entering the final year of his current contract. Still only 27 years old, he should be in line for a substantial new deal, even in the modern game where safeties are generally not paid at the top of the market. Reid has expressed an interest in remaining in Kansas City, though it's not clear if contract talks have progressed.
Coach Andy Reid praised Perine for his pass-catching ability as well as his all-around skill set Sunday, Michael Baca of NFL.com reports.
Perine joined the Chiefs after being released by the Broncos on Tuesday, and Reid used his time with the press to recall Perine's explosive play against Kansas City in the 2021 AFC Championship Game. Despite just joining the team, Perine will be active for Week 1 against Baltimore and could immediately slot in as the change-of-pace back behind Isiah Pacheco, though he'll compete with Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who currently is sidelined by an illness.
Bucky Brooks of NFL.com identifies Steele as a rookie who had a strong preseason and could surprise in 2024.
Steele went undrafted out of UCLA in April and subsequently succeeded in his longshot bid for a spot on the 53-man roster for the defending champions. Although he's listed as a fullback on the Chiefs' depth chart, Steele showed plenty as a runner during the preseason by gaining 87 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Brooks notes the combination of Steele's power and explosiveness and head coach Andy Reid's willingness to utilize multiple backs throughout a season could give Steele opportunities to contribute immediately.
Worthy has been impressive during practices leading up to Week 1, and head coach Andy Reid is counting on him for early contributions with Marquise Brown sidelined due to a shoulder injury, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
The rookie first-round pick had high expectations attached to him from the moment he was drafted by the defending champions given his game-breaking speed and the caliber of quarterback he'll play with. Reid noted Friday that Worthy has looked the part in practices and complimented the Texas product for his constant dialogue with Patrick Mahomes and the team's veteran receivers, as well as his willingness to try a wide variety of routes.
Smith-Schuster, who signed with the Chiefs on Monday, has gotten his second tenure with the team off to a good start, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
The veteran wideout was presumably signed at least in part to address the projected season-opening absence of Marquise Brown due to a shoulder injury. However, Smith-Schuster conceivably provides longer-term value as well, considering his best season since 2020 came during the 2022 campaign with the Chiefs, when he recorded 78 receptions for 933 yards and three touchdowns across 16 regular-season games. Head coach Andy Reid said Friday that Smith-Schuster looked "great" and had "jumped right back in and had some good practices" this week.
Brown, who suffered a shoulder injury this preseason and won't play in Week 1, is making a very fast recovery, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
Head coach Andy Reid expressed amazement at how quickly Brown is recovering from the shoulder dislocation he suffered while making a reception on the Chiefs' first play from scrimmage this preseason. Reid called Brown's progress "incredible," and even though the offseason addition won't be available against his old Ravens squad in Week 1, it appears he could have a chance to make his regular-season debut as early as Week 2 against the Bengals.
Brown (shoulder) underwent surgery Monday and is expected to be sidelined the entire regular season.
The Chiefs are hoping Brown, who dislocated his shoulder in the team's preseason opener, will be able to return in mid-January if the two-time defending Super Bowl champs are in the midst of another playoff run. For now, rookie Xavier Worthy is locked in as Brown's replacement as the No. 2 receiver behind Rashee Rice, who has 12 catches and 15 targets through two games.
Prince didn't do enough in training camp and the preseason to earn a spot on Kansas City's 53-man roster, according to Nate Taylor of The Athletic.
Taylor believes the Chiefs will keep incumbent starter and backup Isiah Pacheco and Clyde Edwards-Helaire on the roster, as well as Carson Steele, who performed well as a running back in the preseason and can also play fullback. Prince seemed to be making a strong push for a roster spot, even working ahead of Edwards-Helaire in team drills early in training camp, but he struggled with consistency as a rusher in the preseason outside of a 41-yard run in the second preseason game and also had a blunder on special teams in the exhibition opener, which cost the Chiefs a safety on a kickoff.
Nate Taylor of The Athletic has the Chiefs retaining seven wide receivers on the 53-man roster, with Toney being a notable absence from the list.
Toney's tumultuous time in Kansas City continued in training camp. He missed the preseason opener against the Jaguars due to a back injury, and then he committed two penalties on the first play of the Chiefs' second preseason game against the Lions. Toney did catch two passes on three targets for 26 yards in Thursday's game against the Bears, but Taylor believes that the 2021 first-round wideout didn't show enough during training camp to warrant a spot on the final roster.
Mahomes completed a behind-the-back pass to Travis Kelce in Saturday's 24-23 preseason loss to the Lions.
Mahomes is the consensus best quarterback in the NFL, and he's also one of the best improvisers of all time at the position. He added another unique throw to his highlight reel Saturday, connecting with Kelce for an eight-yard gain with the aforementioned pass. With Kelce back and a stronger crop of wide receivers to work with in 2024, at least on paper, Mahomes will be looking to lead Kansas City to a third consecutive Super Bowl title.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said Thursday the team already feels the absence of Brown, who suffered a shoulder dislocation in the first play from scrimmage of Saturday's preseason opener, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
Brown's injury isn't as serious as first feared, but the veteran wideout is still unlikely to be available for the Chiefs' Week 1 matchup against the Ravens. Mahomes alluded to the impact of losing Brown's veteran presence in the wide receiver room and on the field Thursday, emphasizing that younger players such as rookie first-round pick Xavier Worthy are now faced with stepping up their contributions.
Brown suffered a left shoulder dislocation during Saturday's preseason game against the Jaguars, and his status for the start of the regular season is in question, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
The 27-year-old wideout has had trouble staying healthy in the past, missing eight regular-season games over the prior two seasons with Arizona, and his tenure with Kansas City is off to a bumpy start as well. Brown's absence will create additional opportunities for 2024 first-round pick Xavier Worthy, plus depth options like Justin Watson and Skyy Moore.
Worthy could be in line for a larger role to begin the regular season after Marquise Brown sustained a shoulder injury during Saturday's preseason game against the Jaguars.
Brown suffered a shoulder dislocation, and his recovery could sideline the free-agent addition early in the regular season. Worthy would be the most logical option to get more of the targets that would have gone to Brown, as they are both downfield burners. Prior to being selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft by Kansas City, Worthy set an NFL Combine record by running the 40-yard dash in 4.21 seconds.
Rees-Zammit has struggled during pass protection drills in training camp, and he noted Saturday that football is "very physical" and is a completely different sport than rugby, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
"I've had to learn to adapt and lower my body height," Rees-Zammit added. "In rugby, that's not too much of a big deal. The blows you take here are pretty big." The former rugby player was an elite winger, and his speed has been utilized on kickoff returns during training camp. However, speed isn't the only skill required to play in an NFL backfield, and the young Welsh player will need to showcase his development in the preseason, starting with Saturday's bout against the Jaguars.
Bolton could be signed to a contract extension before the start of the regular season, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
The linebacker is headed into the final year of his rookie contract after being selected in the second round of the 2021 Draft out of Missouri. Bolton has been a tackling machine in the middle of the Kansas City defense, and while injuries limited him to eight regular-season games in 2023, he still racked up 60 tackles, one year after finishing second in the NFL with 180 stops. With kicker Harrison Butker having received an extension Monday, Bolton could be the next core member of the Super Bowl champs to get a big payday.
Smith could be the next player to get a contract extension from Kansas City, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
Kicker Harrison Butker signed a four-year extension Monday, but the defending Super Bowl champs have a number of other core players they would like to lock up, including Smith. The 25-year-old has emerged as a fixture at right guard for Kansas City since being selected in the sixth round of the 2021 Draft out of Tennessee, and he's headed into the final year of his rookie contract in 2024.
Humphrey is a player that Kansas City would like to sign to a contract extension, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
The 25-year-old center has become a key part of an offensive line that has kept Patrick Mahomes upright as the team has won back-to-back Super Bowls. Humphrey is headed into the final year of his rookie contract after being selected in the second round of the 2021 Draft out of Oklahoma, and he could be the next priority for general manager Brett Veach after kicker Harrison Butker was signed to an extension Monday.
Toney is getting opportunities at running back to begin training camp, Blair Kerkhoff of The Kansas City Star reports.
Toney is explosive with the ball in his hands, but issues with drops and route running have prevented the 2021 first-round draft pick from living up to his potential. Mixing Toney in at running back could prove to be a way to get him the ball more easily via on handoffs and short passes, and the Chiefs boast less competition in the backfield than at receiver. Isiah Pacheco and Clyde Edwards-Helaire are the only players on the roster with more than 62 career rushing attempts.
Prince was the second running back in the rotation in training camp drills Tuesday, according to Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com.
Isiah Pacheco is firmly entrenched atop Kansas City's running back depth chart, but pass-catching specialist Jerick McKinnon is a free agent and Clyde Edwards-Helaire averaged just 3.2 yards per carry during the 2023 season. Prince was limited to 15 special-teams snaps and didn't play on offense as a rookie in 2023 after entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent, but the 24-year-old is making a push to surpass Edwards-Helaire as Pacheco's primary backup heading into the 2024 campaign.
Edwards-Helaire operated behind Isiah Pacheco and Deneric Prince during running back drills at training camp Tuesday, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports.
Edwards-Helaire had already fallen firmly behind Pacheco in the backfield pecking order over the past two seasons, but the 2020 first-round draft pick is in danger of slipping down another spot. Prince looks poised to challenge for the second spot on the depth chart in a Kansas City backfield that no longer employs pass-catching specialist Jerick McKinnon.
Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes said Tuesday that Worthy will be expected to contribute immediately during his rookie season, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
Worthy is being eased into training camp after tweaking his hamstring during OTAs, though that hasn't reduced the expectations for him. The 2024 first-round pick has a strong chance to be on the field during all three-receiver formations and will provide a needed field-stretching element to Kansas City's offense if he proves to be reliable during training camp and the preseason.
Coach Andy Reid said Tuesday he had not heard anything from the league about a possible suspension for Rice, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports.
Rice has allegedly been involved in two incidents this offseason, the first a high-speed crash in Dallas and the second an assault at a nightclub. The legal process regarding the former incident has been slow to play out, meaning the league could opt to wait to hand out any potential suspension until 2025. However, Reid also said the team will be ready to handle any absence for Rice, and Kansas City did reinforce its wide receiver corps this offseason by signing Marquise Brown and drafting Xavier Worthy.
Nate Taylor of The Athletic lists Moore as one of eight Chiefs players to watch during training camp.
Moore couldn't take the sophomore leap in 2023, finishing the regular season with just 21 catches on 38 targets for 244 yards and one touchdown across 14 games. He missed the Chiefs' Super Bowl run due to a knee injury, and with Kansas City adding Marquise Brown in free agency and Xavier Worthy in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Moore will be primarily competing with Kadarius Toney for regular-season snaps if both end up making the roster. If Moore fails to stand out during training camp, Taylor posits that the Chiefs could move on from the 2022 second-round pick, with a trade creating $1.29 million in salary-cap space.
Nate Taylor of The Athletic believes Remigio could earn a spot on the Chiefs' 53-man roster with a strong showing in training camp, coupled with weak performances from Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore.
Remigio caught on with Kansas City as an undrafted rookie in 2023. He made a good first impression during last year's training camp before suffering a season-ending dislocated left shoulder in the preseason opener. Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy praised Remigio in May, noting that the wide receiver "is an absolute professional every day...guys like him find a role. And they've got to make an impact on special teams." Remigio saw his minicamp reps split between the projected starters and top backups, and his ability to serve as a kickoff returner could give him the edge to make the Chiefs' 53-man roster over Toney and Moore.
Wiley stood out in spring practices and impressed Patrick Mahomes with his mix of athleticism and playmaking ability, per Nate Taylor of The Athletic. "The more he gets down the field, he can really make those tough, contested catches," Mahomes said of Wiley. "I want him to play even more physical. I know it's hard in OTAs. You can't really bump, but I think he can make those tough catches in the middle of the field. He's faster than people think he is."
Wiley has a chance to supplant Noah Gray as the top backup to Travis Kelce in 2024. The 6-foot-6, 249-pound tight end was drafted by the Chiefs in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of TCU.
Rees-Zammit will have the opportunity to earn a roster spot with the Chiefs in training camp, and Nate Taylor of The Athletic describes him as the most fascinating player on the 90-man roster. "He wants to be great, and he's a great athlete," special teams coordinator Dave Toub said of Rees-Zammit. "He's just got such a long way to go, mentally-wise. But he's on the accelerator program, and he's doing well."
Rees-Zammit is a former rugby player who offers an enticing mix of speed, ball skills and vision, but Kansas City's preseason opener against the Jaguars on August 10 will mark the first football game of Rees-Zammit's life. He will likely need more time to acclimate to football before challenging for consistent playing time at running back, but Rees-Zammit's skill set could help him carve out a roster spot as a return man on special teams.
Jones is poised to top his 2023 regular-season totals of 10.5 sacks and 29 quarterback hits, according to Nate Taylor of The Athletic.
Jones held out for a new contract last offseason and didn't join the team until Week 2, so he was playing catchup for much of the season in terms of reaching peak game shape. Perhaps in part due to the late start, Jones saw his sack total dip from 15.5 in the 2022 regular season to 10.5 in 2023. Only Aaron Donald has a higher pass-rush win rate from the interior over the past two seasons, and Jones has had a smoother offseason after landing a five-year, $158 million extension. The Chiefs could also give Jones more opportunities to rush the passer by spending more time playing from ahead in 2024 after their 11-6 regular-season record in 2023 represented a down year by the team's lofty standards.
Pacheco was drafted 15th overall in Friday's eight-team PPR fantasy football mock draft among analysts from ESPN.com.
Pacheco surprisingly went in the second round of the mock draft to researcher Kevin Pulsifer, coming off the board before big-name running backs such as Jahmyr Gibbs, Derrick Henry and Travis Etienne. After rushing for 830 yards and five touchdowns in the regular season as a rookie in 2022, Pacheco posted 935 rushing yards and seven touchdowns during the 2023 regular season. He will likely have to improve on those marks significantly to justify being a second-round fantasy selection in 2024, though he's well positioned to receive a heavy workload as the lead back on a Chiefs team that figures to spend plenty of time playing from ahead.
Conner is expected to play every secondary position for the Chiefs in 2024, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
Conner played a versatile role during his five years at Virginia Tech, picking off a total of four passes while also tallying 7.5 sacks. He played a significant role on special teams as a rookie for the Chiefs in 2023, but he could find more time in the secondary in 2024. The safety positions in particular look to be a weakness, so that could ultimately be where Conner settles in, giving him the chance to both rack up tackles and potentially interceptions.
Pacheco's role should grow during the 2024 season, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
Pacheco has served as Kansas City's lead back in each of his two seasons as a pro, but that could prove to be his floor rather than his ceiling. Two things suggest his role could increase, the first of which is that he had a normal offseason, something that couldn't be said heading into 2023, as he was rehabbing from shoulder surgery. In addition, the defending Super Bowl champions have parted ways with Jerick McKinnon, leaving Pacheco and Clyde Edwards-Helaire as the only two experienced backs on the roster. Taylor projects that Pacheco will surpass his 205 regular-season carries from 2023, giving him a good shot at topping 1,000 rushing yards for the first time.
Kansas City could rely upon Hardman's rapport with Patrick Mahomes early in the season, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
The defending Super Bowl champions revamped their receiving corps this offseason, which doesn't bode well for Hardman in the long run. However, Taylor suggests that the speedster will have a regular role in the offense early on, primarily to free up space underneath for Travis Kelce and Marquise Brown. Also helping Hardman's case for a starting role to begin the season is that Rashee Rice will likely be facing a suspension from the league due to his role in a multi-vehicle crash in March.
Smith could be the top free-agent guard available next offseason, positioning him for a contract worth more than $20 million per season, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
The 2021 sixth-round pick is heading into the final year of his rookie contract and has emerged as the starting right guard on Patrick Mahomes' offensive line, earning two Super Bowl rings in the process. Another strong campaign from Smith would set him up to cash in, but it might also price him out of Kansas City's plans, as the team could prioritize signing center Creed Humphrey to an extension instead.
Jones recently relayed a desire to get some time off during training camp to head coach Andy Reid after not taking part in any practice last summer due to a contract holdout, Grant Gordon of NFL.com reports.
The star lineman, who secured a five-year, $158 million extension this offseason after notching a fifth straight Pro Bowl nod and 10.5 sacks in 2023, was serious in his request to Reid. Jones is now 29 and has played in 39 total games since the start of the 2022 season, when factoring in postseason contests. "If I'm able to do a day on, a day off, or a day on and a half a day off, I can do that," Jones said. "I think it's pretty fun."
Morris ceded the majority of first-team reps at left tackle to 2024 second-round draft pick Kingsley Suamataia during mandatory minicamp, according to Nate Taylor of The Athletic.
Morris and Suamataia will compete for the starting left tackle role in training camp. While it's possible Suamataia saw more opportunities in minicamp because he's a rookie who's more in need of the extra reps, the two tackles' usage suggests Morris isn't the clear leader in the job battle. Morris primarily filled a reserve role as a rookie in 2023, notching four starts after being drafted in the third round.
Suamataia received the majority of first-team reps at left tackle during mandatory minicamp and will compete with Wanya Morris for a starting position during training camp, according to Nate Taylor of The Athletic.
Morris struggled in pass protection at times as a rookie in 2023, prompting the Chiefs to draft Suamataia in the second round this April. The winner of the training camp battle will protect Patrick Mahomes' blind side while serving as a replacement at left tackle for Donovan Smith, whom the Chiefs didn't re-sign. Suamataia may have the early edge in the competition based on his usage in minicamp, but it's also possible the Chiefs were prioritizing the rookie being given more reps so he could acclimate faster to the NFL.
Remigio worked with the first-team offense during Kansas City's OTAs and minicamp, Adam Teicher of ESPN reports.
An undrafted free agent out of Fresno State in 2023, Remigio missed his rookie season with a wrist injury, but he's been healthy this offseason and making a surprisingly good impression. Kansas City's wide receiver depth chart has a lot of names ahead of him but few truly established playmakers, so if Remigio can continue to shine into training camp, he could carve out a role for himself. His ability to contribute on special teams as a kickoff returner could also help him earn a roster spot.
Mahomes said head coach Andy Reid has already been pushing him to throw the ball downfield more this offseason, an approach the All-Pro quarterback is looking to continue in the regular season, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
Mahomes gained two very fast new weapons this offseason in veteran free-agent addition Marquise Brown and rookie first-round pick Xavier Worthy, so a more aggressive approach would arguably be expected. Mahomes averaged a career-low 7.0 yards per attempt in 2023 and his 50 passes of 20-plus yards were the second fewest of his career, but a concerted effort to throw more downfield could get Mahomes back in the area of the 5,000-yard threshold, which he eclipsed in 2022.
Pacheco said Tuesday that he has slimmed down to 207 pounds, per Nate Taylor of The Athletic. "I'm 207 and feeling good," Pacheco said. "No offseason surgeries this time around."
Pacheco is excited to be healthy entering his third NFL season, as he needed surgeries on his hand and labrum after his rookie campaign in 2021. He recovered from those injuries to post 935 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on the ground in 2023. Pacheco is listed at 216 pounds, but he claims to be nine pounds lighter than that heading into the 2024 season.
Kelce plans to continue his career beyond the 2024 season, Adam Teicher of ESPN reports.
Rumors have swirled regarding Kelce's future in football thanks to his relatively advanced age and the personal and team-level success he's already experienced. However, he's reiterated his love for football and is ready to play until his body can no longer hold up. While Kelce battled a knee injury for much of 2023, he was still one of the most productive tight ends in the league by posting 93 receptions for 984 yards and five touchdowns across 15 regular-season games.
Thompson, who suffered a seizure and cardiac arrest during a special-teams meeting at the Chiefs' facility Thursday, has regained consciousness in an area hospital, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
The second-year defensive lineman's scary incident led to him suffering cardiac arrest for up to a minute and a half according to Rick Burkholder, Kansas City's vice president of sports medicine and performance, and Thompson was then sedated and on a ventilator overnight after being transported to a local hospital. However, Burkholder told reporters Friday that Thompson regained consciousness and was back to breathing without assistance, although an official diagnosis has yet to be made.
Hardman, who caught the game-winning touchdown pass in Super Bowl LVIII, is returning to the Chiefs on a one-year contract, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
Teicher points out Hardman is returning to a considerably revamped receiving corps, one that's seen the additions of Marquise Brown and rookie Xavier Worthy this offseason. However, Kansas City also released deep threat Marquez Valdes-Scantling, theoretically creating opportunities for the speedy Hardman to carry out some of those downfield routes in 2024.
The Chiefs are considering Reid as a kickoff specialist for this coming season, Nick Shook of NFL.com reports.
The new kickoff rules the NFL is adopting from the former XFL could involve kickers being involved in tackles much more frequently than in seasons past. Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub confirmed he wouldn't want placekicker Harrison Butker involved in that level of physicality over the course of a season, and Reid, who has proven both a capable kicker and proficient tackler from his safety position, could therefore be a candidate to handle kickoffs.
Mahomes will face off with Lamar Jackson and the Ravens to open the 2024 season Thursday night, Sept. 5, Matt McMullen of the team's official site reports.
Mahomes will get another crack at the Ravens team he helped upend in the AFC Championship Game in January at M&T Bank Stadium to earn Kansas City an opportunity to garner a second straight Super Bowl title. Mahomes' 241-yard, one-touchdown effort against what had been an elite Baltimore defense played a critical role in KC garnering the AFC crown, and for this season-opening rematch, the perennial Pro Bowler will be working with several new pass-catching weapons, including rookie first-round pick Xavier Worthy.
Rice is considered a suspect in an alleged assault that injured a man at a Dallas nightclub earlier this week, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
Area police confirmed Rice's status to the Dallas Morning News on Tuesday after officers were dispatched early Monday morning to a nightclub following reports of an assault. A man was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, and although no charges had been filed as of Tuesday afternoon, that could eventually change. The incident is the second for Rice this offseason after his involvement in a six-car crash in Dallas in March, one that's led to the Chiefs wideout facing eight charges.
Matt Miller of ESPN.com believes Worthy will win the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award in 2024.
Worthy didn't hear his name called until the 28th pick of the 2024 NFL Draft, but Miller believes Worthy will earn the award over the likes of first overall pick Caleb Williams, second overall pick Jayden Daniels and fourth overall pick Marvin Harrison. Worthy set an NFL Scouting Combine record by running the 40-yard dash in 4.21 seconds, and the wide receiver out of Texas will have reigning Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes throwing him the ball in 2024.
Adam Teicher of ESPN.com posits that the Chiefs took Wiley in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 131st overall, to be the eventual successor to Travis Kelce.
With Kelce set to turn 35 in October, adding the 6-foot-6, 250-pound frame of Wiley gives quarterback Patrick Mahomes another big target in the passing game, particularly in the red zone. General manager Brett Veach said that Wiley's two-way ability as a pass catcher and blocker will be valuable in a rotation with Kelce and Noah Gray, while Irv Smith figures to slide into the fourth spot on the depth chart. In his final season at TCU, Wiley posted 47 catches for 520 yards and eight touchdowns.
Speaking to reporters Saturday at the Chiefs' rookie minicamp, Worthy said that he's not concerned about his lighter frame and has been modelling his game after retired wide receiver DeSean Jackson, Bobby Kownack of NFL.com reports.
Worthy weighed in at 169 pounds at rookie minicamp, four pounds heavier than what he measured ahead of the NFL Scouting Combine. He surged up draft boards after setting the combine record for the 40-yard dash, clocking in a 4.21 seconds. Worthy noted that he won't "go and try to hit a 215-pound linebacker," and quarterback Patrick Mahomes will ensure the Texas wideout stays out of harm's way.
Toney had his fifth-year option declined by the Chiefs on Thursday, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
The Chiefs' decision makes Toney a free agent after this coming season, which will be his second full one in Kansas City. Both general manager Brett Veach and head coach Andy Reid recently indicated Toney is in the Chiefs' plans this coming season, but the decision to not commit beyond 2024 stems largely from the wideout's checkered injury history and sub-standard production last season.
Chiefs general manager Brett Veach believes Kelce could continue playing for another few years, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports. "The odds of someone playing this far into the thirties are very low, but it does happen, and it happens with just unicorns in the profession, and Travis is one of those," Veach said. "So, we'll just have to wait and see. But I've seen no signs of [Kelce] slowing down."
Veach's comments came after the team adjusted Kelce's deal, with his two-year, $34.25 million contract making him the highest-paid tight end in the NFL. The 34-year-old Kelce is still the gold standard at his position, as he came 16 yards shy of an eighth consecutive 1,000-yard season in 2023 before adding 355 yards and three touchdowns in four playoff games. Veach and the Chiefs are hoping that Kelce will still have more football in him after the expiration of this two-year contract.
Worthy is set to catch passes from Patrick Mahomes after being drafted 28th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft by Kansas City.
Worthy gets an ideal landing spot to begin his career, going to the team that won both of the last two Super Bowls. Kansas City didn't get much production from its wide receivers other than Rashee Rice in 2023, but the Chiefs have addressed the position in the offseason by signing Marquise Brown and drafting Worthy out of Texas. Mahomes' strong and accurate arm should allow Worthy to make the most of his blazing speed on deep throws. Worthy set an NFL Combine record by running the 40-yard dash in 4.21 seconds.
Nate Taylor of The Athletic posits that the Chiefs used their picks in the 2024 NFL Draft to plug holes in the offense to help Mahomes' bid for a three-peat.
After drafting Texas wideout Xavier Worthy in the first round, the Chiefs spent three of their remaining six picks on offensive linemen. Kansas City took BYU tackle Kingsley Suamataia late in the second round before spending two day-three picks on Penn State's Hunter Nourzad and guard C.J. Hanson out of Holy Cross. Inconsistent play on the offensive line and at wideout nearly hampered the Chiefs' Super Bowl run, and Mahomes will look to prepare his rookie teammates to contribute right out of the gate this coming season.
Rice is expected to face league discipline and a suspension due to his involvement in a multi-vehicle crash outside of Dallas last month, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
The wide receiver is facing eight criminal charges as well, but any suspension from the league office likely wouldn't be imposed until after his legal issues are settled. Rice led Kansas City in receiving yards as a rookie last season before catching 26 passes during the team's four playoff games, but his questionable availability for the 2024 campaign will give the Super Bowl champs even more incentive to invest resources at his position in this year's draft, perhaps as high as the 32nd overall pick.
Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said Friday that the team is "lucky" to have been able to sign Brown to a one-year deal this offseason, Nick Shook of NFL.com reports.
Veach characterized being able to add a receiver of Brown's pedigree on a one-year deal as a blessing to the Chiefs, who were looking to augment their wideout corps as they begin a quest for a third straight Super Bowl title. The fact Brown is committed to the team through only 2024 isn't a detriment in Veach's eyes, either, with the GM noting Brown could "set himself up nicely moving forward" in terms of earning a lucrative long-term deal in Kansas City or elsewhere with a big season.
Danna has agreed to a three-year, $24 million deal to remain with the Chiefs that will become official once he passes a physical, ESPN.com reports.
Danna picked a good time to put together a career season in 2023, when he started 16 games and recorded a career-high 50 tackles and 6.5 sacks. The 2020 fifth-round pick also started all four of Kansas City's postseason contests and has been a key rotational piece, at minimum, on the defensive line since his rookie campaign.
Wentz, who signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs on Monday, noted Thursday that former Eagles teammate Nick Foles' past endorsement of Kansas City head coach Andy Reid impacted his decision to join the defending champions, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
Wentz and Foles were teammates in Philadelphia during the 2017 and 2018 seasons, and the latter had also started his career with the Eagles as a third-round pick in 2012. It was during that first tenure when Foles had a chance to initially work under Reid, then Philadelphia's head coach. Wentz noted Foles spoke glowingly of Reid and current Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy when Wentz and Foles were teammates, noting "he loved working with those guys, and those things he said to me back then definitely still rang true in my head as I was making this decision."
Mahomes will have a speedy new receiver addition for 2024 in Marquise Brown, who's expected to sign a one-year deal with the Chiefs per Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Mahomes has become renowned for making proverbial lemonade from lemons in terms of what he's mostly had to work with at receiver since the Chiefs traded away Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins prior to the 2022 season. However, 2023 first-round pick Rashee Rice showed plenty of promise in terms of his ability to serve as a true No. 1 receiver, and the addition of the experienced but still speedy Brown brightens the star quarterback's outlook for 2024 further.
