Reports: Phoenix Suns to sign Monte Morris, a point guard who can ease turnover issues

Point guard Monte Morris plans to sign with the Phoenix Suns in free agency, per The Athletic's Shams Charania.

According to PHNX Sports' Gerald Bourguet, he is signing a one-year contract.

A veteran minimum signing for Morris gives Phoenix a point guard who was first in the NBA among guards in assists-to-turnover ratio at 9.86 (minimum five games played). Therefore, the Suns would be paying $2.8 million for a point guard to help protect the basketball on a team that had the sixth-most turnovers per game last season, and just 12th in assists per game.

Morris played 42 games, including the playoffs, last season, returning to the court following a right quad strain. He averages 10 points per game in his career, to go along with 47.7/39.1/82.4 shooting-percentage splits.

He played during the Timberwolves' first-round sweep of the Suns during the 2024 playoffs. The 29-year-old brings seven years of experience to the team, and joins a squad that did not yet have a designated point guard signed, other than agreeing to a two-way contract with Collin Gillespie.

In those seven seasons, he was a starter for two years in the 2021-22 season (Denver Nuggets) and the 2022-23 season (Washington Wizards). In those two campaigns, he shot 48.2% from the field, 39% from deep and 85.1% from the free throw line. He averaged 11.5 points per game.

In his abbreviated 2023-24 regular season spent with the Detroit Pistons and the Timberwolves, Morris was 2-11 from 3-point range with the Pistons but connected on 25 of his 59 3-point attempts (42.5%) over 27 games played with Minnesota.
