Report: Detroit Red Wings engaged in trade talks for New York Rangers D Jacob Trouba

The Detroit Red Wings, already busy with the second and final day of the 2024 NHL draft, are reportedly working on a big-time trade.

On Saturday morning, the New York Post's Larry Brooks reported the New York Rangers and Red Wings are in talks about a trade that could potentially move defenseman Jacob Trouba, a Michigan native who played a season at the University of Michigan in 2012-13, to Detroit.

"A well-placed source has told The Post that GM Chris Drury is working on a deal to send the captain to the Red Wings, a trade that the Michigan native would presumably accept after having played as a freshman for the Wolverines in 2012-13," Brooks wrote.

Later during the broadcast of the second round of the draft, NHL Network insider Elliotte Friedman also reported that New York and Detroit were in trade talks surrounding Trouba.

"There's a lot of talk about Detroit and the Rangers continuing to work on a Jacob Trouba deal, and I think there's some hope that that could be consummated today but it's in the hands of the two teams right now," Friedman said on TV.

Trouba, 31, is a Rochester, Michigan, native with 11 years of NHL experience, including the last five seasons with New York. He is a right-shot defenseman known for his physical play, sometimes drawing discipline for his aggressiveness. He finished with 22 points (3 G, 19 A) and was the winner of the Mark Messier Leadership Award as the Rangers' captain. He is currently set to make $8 million in 2024-25 and 2025-26, but Brooks reported the Rangers could retain around $2.5 million of the cap hit to help facilitate the deal.

Trouba's contract includes a no-move clause that turns into a 15-team no-trade clause at the beginning of free agency on Monday, July 1. If the reported terms of the deal are true, the Red Wings would pay Trouba $5.5 million, adding the Wings' cap equation this summer that includes potential extensions for Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond, as well as potentially re-signing pending free agents Patrick Kane, Shayne Gostisbehere and David Perron.
