Lowndes basketball sweeps on final day of Charles Cooper

Nov. 23—VALDOSTA — Day two of the Charles Cooper Thanksgiving Tournament brought an end to the competition for Lowndes' basketball teams. The Vikings showed out for the occasion, with both teams securing victory over their opponents. The Lowndes boys picked up their first win of the season over Lanier County, and the Vikettes continue to be undefeated, beating Lee County's Lady Trojans for an overall record of 4-0.

The Vikettes and the Trojans were fairly matched, with the contest being close going into the half. They looked unstoppable for the rest of the game, putting up a 30-point lead over Lee County for a final score of 64-34. The Vikings seemed to click this game as they held a considerable lead over Lanier County's Bulldogs throughout. Incredible performances from the athletes, especially the Vikings' Kam Jackson, led to a final score of 56-37.

VIKETTES

The Vikettes started strong with an 8-0 lead, with the Trojans unable to score for the first 2.5 minutes of the game. Kaci Demps started the game strong, putting up most of the points for the first period, two three-pointers, and a free throw. The first period ended 12-7, with Lee County retaliating in the second.

The Lady Trojans' offense would make the game close in the second period, nearly tying it up, and, for three minutes, neither team could score — Until Aryana Thomas and Leah Jones made back-to-back three-pointers, and a steal by Demps in the paint led to the Vikettes leading 26-24, going into halftime.

Lee County's defense could not hold the Vikettes' offense in the second half, with three-pointers from Thomas starting the momentum for Lowndes. The momentum continued into the fourth period, with Kayla Jackson being unstoppable in the paint, racking up more of a lead for the Vikettes.

The Trojans could not score for nearly four minutes in the game's final period. The Vikettes eventually totaled a 30-point lead over their opponent, ending the game 64-34.

Vikings

The Lowndes Vikings went into their game against Lanier County ready to compete. The team played hard the whole game, with the star of the first period being Kam Jackson. Jackson scored 13 out of the Vikings' 14 first period points, having made three three-pointers in 3 minutes. The Bulldogs' Chris Locklear attempted to keep the game close with good layups in the paint.

Lowndes' Rashaud Adams opened up the second period with an impressive three-pointer, with the rest of the Vikings coming online. Keyshawn Arthur put three three-pointers on the board for the Vikings in the second period, and their defense only allowed seven points to go from Lanier County. Lowndes took a nice lead going into the half with a score of 26-15.

The Trojans could only achieve little ground in the third period while the Vikings continued gaining more control of the match. Only allowing another seven points from Lanier County in the third period, Lowndes continued to dominate going into the game's final period.

Starting at 41-22, the final period consisted of much ball movement from the Vikings, resulting in a quick end to the game, although the Bulldogs put up a fight in the end, racking up 15 points in the final quarter. The Vikings ended the game with a three-pointer from Ruben Compton, followed by a three from Kam Jackson. The game ended 56-37 for the varsity boys first win of the season.

The Vikings and Vikettes return on Nov. 28th to face off against the Berrien Rebels in Nashville.
