CALGARY -- The Detroit Red Wings finally ended their power-play outage on the road.

That wasn't enough to stop the Calgary Flames' winning streak at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Red Wings center Valtteri Filppula scored a power-play goal in the second period for Detroit's first man-advantage goal away from Joe Louis Arena this season, but the Flames responded with three unanswered scores in the third period en route to 5-2 victory on Wednesday night.

Desperate for a win after three straight road losses, the Flames (10-11-4) managed a fifth consecutive victory at home, thanks in large part to the stellar goaltending of Miikka Kiprusoff.

The Flames were outshot 38-22 -- including 15-6 after the opening period -- but their Kiprusoff allowed two goals, and Lee Stempniak, Curtis Glencross and Blake Comeau each scored for Calgary in a span of 4:23 seconds in the final period.

"If everyone is leaving the Scotiabank Saddledome with a smile, it's because of Kipper," Flames coach Bob Hartley said. "In the first period, our legs will still in the plane from our California trip, but in second period, it seemed that we got more life, more jump.

"In the third period, we really fore-checked well. We were dominant in their zone and we really created turnovers, and that's how we got this game."

The Red Wings (12-10-5) suffered a third consecutive loss, one of which was decided in a shootout. At least they can stop answering questions about their terrible power play on the road, which was 0 for 36 in their first 10 away games, although that was little consolation.

"We put a huge emphasis on these two points tonight," Red Wings defenseman Kyle Quincey said. "Coming in, we knew it was a big game for us. We get that big goal at the end of the second and we feel good coming into the third and you make a few mistakes and they capitalize, and after that it's hard to get them back."

Especially the way Kiprusoff was playing.

"That's why you can never question Kipper," Glencross said. "Any time your goalie puts up (36) saves for you, you want to reward him like that."

Before the Flames had a shot on goal, defenseman Niklas Kronwall gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead with a blast from the point 3:20 into the game.

Alex Tanguay tied it up 2:35 later, splitting Detroit's defense on the power play before taking a breakaway pass from Michael Cammalleri and using a crafty deke on Red Wings goaltender Jonas Gustavsson, the surprise starter because Jimmy Howard was feeling ill.

The Flames got a lucky bounce on their go-ahead goal. Jay Bouwmeester's shot on an offensive rush was stopped by Gustavsson, but the rebound hit the skate of Wings rearguard Jakub Kindl and bounced into the net.

Filppula had the lone goal in a second period, shoveling a rebound past Kiprusoff on the man-advantage.

The Flames grabbed the lead 5:37 into the third with Stempniak taking a cross-crease feed from Glencross on a two-on-one rush and scoring.

Glencross, who showed no ill-effects of a wrist injury that made him a game-time decision, scored from the slot at the 9:12 mark and Comeau added an insurance goal from a similar spot 48 seconds later to extend their winning streak at home.

"When everyone is bringing up the bad road-trip and all that, that was kind of our focus -- we have been playing pretty good at home and we've beat some pretty good teams here lately," Bouwmeester said. "We were lucky, I think, tonight. The first two periods, Kip really gave us a chance and then we did a pretty good job in the third period."

Gustavsson made just 17 saves in Detroit's cage but denied Flames center Mikael Backlund on a penalty shot with less than eight minutes to play.

NOTES: The Flames will host the Nashville Predators on Friday, while the Red Wings visit the Edmonton Oilers. ... Howard was ill, so goaltending coach Jim Bedard strapped on the pads for the morning skate. Howard didn't sit on Detroit's bench for the game. ... For Red Wings assistant coach Tom Renney, Friday's game in Edmonton will mark his first trip to Rexall Place since he was fired by the Oilers after last season. ... Flames captain Jarome Iginla needs one more goal to tie former New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins legend Bryan Trottier at No. 32 on the NHL's all-time goal-scoring list with 524. ... Red Wings center Valtteri Filppula was back in the lineup after missing seven games with a shoulder injury. Even with Filppula's return, the Wings have a lengthy injured list. Forwards Todd Bertuzzi (back), Darren Helm (back) and Mikael Samuelsson (finger) and defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo (shoulder) all were scratched. The Wings also scratched gritty winger Jordin Tootoo, although coach Mike Babcock insisted he was healthy. ... Flames winger Curtis Glencross was back in action after missing one game because of a wrist injury. The Flames scratched skilled winger Roman Cervenka to free up a spot on their forward lines.
