Cardinals SS Furcal likely to miss rest of year

St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal will likely miss the remainder of the season with a right elbow injury, MLB.com reported Friday.

Initial tests on the elbow showed damage to the ulnar collateral ligament. He was injured during the Cardinals' game on Thursday when he said he felt "a pop" and tingling after several throws. He left the game after grabbing the elbow.

Furcal is waiting for results from an MRI to determine the extent of the damage. Furcal is hitting .264 in 121 games this year. He is signed through next year.

Furcal was placed on the 15-day disabled list and Pete Kozma was called up from Class AAA Memphis.

Kozma, who batted .232 in 131 games in Memphis, started for St. Louis on Friday. He is expected to split time at shortstop with Daniel Descalso. The Cardinals decided to bring up Kozma because of his defense. Ryan Jackson is considered a better hitting prospect but the team can call him up in September as rosters can expand to 40 players beginning Saturday.
