Barner, Thomas lead Oregon to 42-25 win over Fresno State

EUGENE, Ore. -- Oregon is having no problem replacing its all-time leading rusher.

Kenjon Barner and De'Anthony Thomas both ran for more than 100 yards and scored two touchdowns in the first half alone as the Ducks totaled 366 yards on the ground in a 42-25 win over Fresno State on Saturday at Autzen Stadium.

Barner, who took over as the starter this year when All-American LaMichael James left after his junior year for the NFL Draft, finished with career highs of 34 carries and 201 yards while scoring three touchdowns as the Ducks improved to 2-0.

"It was a good day," Barner said. "I will carry the ball as many times as they give it to me. I definitely think I get stronger as the game goes on and I think as a team we get stronger."

Thomas had only seven carries, but finished with 102 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Marcus Mariota added 67 rushing yards on 14 carries.

The concern out of the victory for Oregon was that the Ducks seemed to fade in the second half for the second week in a row. Oregon built a 35-3 lead late in the first half before Fresno State outscored the Ducks 19-7 in the second half. Last week, Oregon was outscored 24-7 in the second half of a 57-34 win over Arkansas State.

"We sputtered at times, but those things are correctable," Oregon coach Chip Kelly said. "We are not going to score on every possession of the season. We make mistakes and we did that today."

Expectations are high for the fourth-ranked Ducks and may have been raised when Oregon started the season by scoring on its first seven drives against Arkansas State. Cornerback Brian Jackson said critics may be expecting too much.

"It's not frustrating for us," he said. "Our offense still put up a lot of points; that was a decisive win. People expect too much, like we are superheroes or something. We're not going to beat every team 80-0."

It looked like the Ducks might get close to that point total when they built a 35-6 halftime lead.

After Fresno State opened the game with a field goal, Oregon answered in less than a minute as the Ducks needed only four plays to drive 68 yards, culminated by a 39-yard touchdown run by Thomas that put Oregon ahead 7-0.

The Ducks needed just a little longer on their second drive as Barner capped a five-play, 73-yard drive that took 1:01 with a 3-yard touchdown run that put Oregon ahead 14-3. Oregon stretched the lead to 21-3 on a 22-yard touchdown pass by Mariota to Colt Lyerla early in the second quarter. Thomas broke a couple of tackles for a 51-yard touchdown run that stretched the lead to 28-3.

The Ducks put together a 98-yard scoring drive just before halftime. Barner scored on a 3-yard run to put Oregon ahead 35-3 before Fresno State's Quentin Breshears made a 43-yard field goal to cap the first half.

"We clearly weren't up for it at the beginning of the game," Fresno State coach Tim DeRuyter said. "We got outplayed, outcoached, and I think our guys had a bit of a bug-eye look in the stadium. I think we were too concerned about their ranking."

Oregon fumbled on back-to-back possessions in the third quarter and Fresno State scored following both turnovers. Derek Carr threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Burse and then Breshears hit a 25-yard field goal to get the Bulldogs within 35-16 with 4:14 left in the third quarter.

Following yet another Oregon turnover -- a fumble by Mariota -- Breshears kicked a 37-yard field goal to cut Oregon's lead to 35-19 with 9:40 left in the game.

Barner sealed the victory with a 16-yard touchdown run with 3:51 left. Barner ran on nine of 11 plays during that final scoring drive and totaled 66 yards.

"He's a special player," Kelly said. "We can build upon that last possession as a positive out of the second half because in the third quarter we didn't have a lot of positives."
