You don’t need any fancy skills or a huge list of ingredients for this recipe. Learning how to cook a steak is simple and easy. I love this recipe because it creates perfect steaks in minutes and anyone can master it.
- TASTE: Garlicky and buttery, this savory steak is delicious. We season it with our favorite spice mix to enhance the flavor, making it salty, spicy, and super tasty.
- TEXTURE: The ribeye is marbled with fat that melts to create a juicy and tender cut of meat.
- TIME: The cooking time may vary depending on your oven and the thickness of the steak, but my steaks were about an inch thick and took 8 minutes. Total time was 13 minutes.
- EASE: This recipe uses just a few ingredients and is super simple to make.
What You’ll Need
Ingredient Notes
- Steak: Use bone-in ribeye for optimal flavor for the steak. You can use boneless if you prefer though.
- Oil and Butter: The meat will need to be coated in olive oil or avocado oil before hitting the hot pan to create a nice sear. The butter will be added at the end of cooking to enhance flavor.
- Spices: We love using Weber Chicago steak seasoning because the spice mix is amazing!
- Garlic: The garlic is probably the best thing you can add to steak to give it the best addition of flavor.
Add-ins and Substitutions
- Substitute the seasoning- You can use basic salt and black pepper, or use paprika, thyme, rosemary, or basil to flavor the steak.
- Add sauce- Add some chimichurri sauce, peppercorn sauce, herb-garlic butter sauce, or a creamy blue cheese dressing to your oven-baked steak.
- Add toppings- Top the steak with some sauteed mushrooms, peppers, or onions.
- Cook it on the stove or grill- For the stove, sear your 1 inch steak for 3 minutes on each side. Then baste with steak renderings for another 3-5 minutes. For the grill, Set the grill to high heat for an inferred grill and medium-high for a direct flame grill. cook each side of the steak for about 5-6 minutes per side.
How to Cook Steak in the Oven
- Rinse and pat the steak– As with any raw meat, I always rinse and pat my ribeye steaks dry with a paper towel.
- Season the steak– Now drizzle a generous amount of olive oil over the rib eye steak and massage the pressed garlic over the entire steaks. Now season them with your favorite steak seasoning. I love using Weber’s Chicago steak seasoning for this ribeye steak recipe.
Pro Tip: Make sure you pat the meat dry to get rid of excess water. This will allow the oil and seasonings to adhere better instead of sliding off.
- Pan sear and finish in oven– Sear each side of the rib eye steak in the cast iron skillet then finish them off in the oven with a slice of butter on top.
Recipe Tips
- Allow the steak to come to room temperature- Let the steak sit on the counter for about 20-30 minutes to allow it to become less cold. This will help with even cooking.
- Check the temperature for doneness- The best way to determine the temperature of your meat is by inserting an instant-read thermometer into the thickest part of the meat.
- Rest your steak- Let the steak rest for 10 minutes before cutting into it to allow the juices to reabsorb, keeping the meat juicy instead of dry.
FAQs
The secret to getting a perfect brown crust on steak is high heat. When frying the pan in oil, you want to get the pan to at least 285 degrees Fahrenheit. That char is what will give the steak its amazing flavor. This insanely delicious flavoring method is also known as the Maillard reaction.
Sear both sides of a 1-inch steak until well browned then finish the ribeye steak in the oven for about 5-7 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for a medium rare steak, 7-9 minutes for medium, and 10-12 minutes for medium well.
Medium rare steak should be between 130-135 degrees Fahrenheit. Here is a temperature guide for steak:
Well done: 155-165 degrees Fahrenheit
Medium well: 145 degrees Fahrenheit
For Medium: 135-145 degrees Fahrenheit
Medium rare: 130 to 135 degrees Fahrenheit (most people prefer it this way)
Rare: 120-130 degrees Fahrenheit

Dina says
Thank you Mary! I am so glad you found this steak recipe.
Hailey says
Hi Dina!
In step 2, how long should the steak be seared on each side before placing in the oven?
Dina says
Hi Hailey 🙂 You want to sear each side until it is well-browned. Usually, it that can take about 1-2 minutes. Let me know how it goes! 🙂
Mary says
I tried this recipe twice and these was the best steaks I’ve ever had.
Dina says
Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback Mary! I am so glad that you enjoyed this steak recipe!
Mike says
If you sear until temp is reached then put in the oven for 8 minutes, wouldn’t it be over done. Or are the directions misleading? Thinking maybe use the thermometer during oven cooking. Might want to put thermometer instructions at the end of the directions.
Dina says
Hi Mike 🙂 You would first want to just sear the steaks and then place them in the oven to finish cooking. That is where you would want to check the internal temperature with a thermometer. I will reword that for clarification. Thanks! 🙂

Hubby made these when his grill broke. We loved them. We are now preparing to make them for a group of good friends.
Just yummy.
Dina says
Margo, I am so glad you had a chance to give this recipe a try! We used to only grill steak, and now we usually only make it in a cast iron. The combination of flavors are so delicious!
Jeanett Speakman says
This was definitely delicious! The only thing is the 5-7 wasn’t long enough unless rare is what you want. I kept ours in for an additional 8 mins and it was perfect for our taste. Convection oven 400 degrees.
Dina says
Glad to hear you loved this steak recipe Jeanett! The recipe itself says 8 minutes in the oven. I think you were reading higher in the post for general times for steaks in different settings. It also depends on the thickness of your steak and on how much you sear/brown it. I hope that helps 🙂
