Driver is an action racing video game. It was published by GT Interactive and was developed by Reflections Interactive.[1] It is the first game in the Driver video game series.

It was released on 25 June 1999 in Europe and July 8, 1999 in North America for the PlayStation, as well as on 1 October 1999 for Windows. The game would later be released on 10 May 2000 for Game Boy Color, 12 December 2000 for Macintosh, and 8 December 2009 for mobile phones.[2][3][4][5][6][7]

In the game, the player controls undercover NYPD detective John Tanner and works as driver for criminals in order to infiltrate their groups and take them down. This includes missions such as being a getaway driver for a bank heist, delivering stolen cars, and destroying rival gang's businesses.[8]

A sequel titled Driver 2 was released on November 14, 2000.

The game recieved very positive reviews by game critics. Critics said that they liked the graphics, driving mechanics, survival mode, and director mode. However, critics didn't like that there were some glitches and load times were long.[9][10][11][12]

It was named Best Racing Game at the 1999 Game Critics Awards and was nominated for both Console Game of the Year and Console Racing Game of the Year at the the 3rd Annual Interactive Achievement Awards.[13][14]
